Re: Norwich hockey 2012-2013: Our thread closed before Owsego's

I just watched the WCAX recap of the Norwich-Plattsburgh game. On the Thomas goal, what the heck was with the swipe he took at a Cardinal while celebrating?? Didn't think he was that type. Emery would have him sitting down for a game or two for that. (see Alex Brenton vs. Oswego celebration..did not play last night because of it).

He was celebrating and did not know the Cardinal was even there. It was not intended!

Watch the video again, Charlie.

Just watched the WCAX recap video myself, replaying that part of the clip 5 or 6 times to make sure, and as much as I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt, that's a pretty tough sell there, Charlie. Jensen was in front him the whole way to the boards, and never changed direction or speed in any way that would allow me to say Thomas just misjudged where he would be. Thomas just seemed so intent on jumping into the boards to celebrate, that he didn't care if he had to plow through a cardinal to do it... So, while there may have been no malice in it, it was an intentional action that showed a lack of respect for the opponent.

And honestly, couple that with the fact that he seemed (meaning this is a realistically possible interpretation of the video available to us, not necessarily the truth, only Thomas knows that) to be somewhat arrogantly holding up the Cadets logo on his chest as if boastfully reminding Jensen who is he was playing, before proceeding to jump on top of Jensen on his way into the boards, and you can VERY easily see how a Plattsburgh fan might be upset. Am I saying that was what he was doing? No. But I'm saying that there is reason to believe it was intentional, and not much to prove OR disprove it in the video.

Regardless, he knew Jensen was there, and chose to attempt to jump into glass there anyway. That's disrespectful, at the very least. Great hockey player, and this seems very out of character for him, so I don't think a big deal should be made out of this quite yet. If he keeps it up, different story. ;)

Re: Norwich hockey 2012-2013: Our thread closed before Owsego's

I don't see it - to me it looked as that Jensen was in the way of the celebration as much as anything else. As for holding up the logo, I'd suspect that was more for the Card fans right behind the glass than for Jensen. I think, if anything, Jensen could have gotten out of the way of what was going to be the Cadet's goal celebration. As they say in squeekball - no harm, no foul.

As for accountability, McShane is right up there with the best of them and if there is any question about a player's behavior on or off the ice, he will enforce the appropriate discipline. A couple of years ago as I recall he kept some top players in suits in the stands due to infraction of "team rules."

(This response after watching the clip 3 or 4 more times)

Where would you have liked Jensen to go? With the momentum he had as the goal was scored, his options were: Stop abruptly or turn back towards the goal (either of which would have caused him to collide rather dangerously into Duszynski) not slow down, and go straight into the boards at full speed (with an obvious risk of personal injury), speed up and risk running very violently into Thomas, or do what he did and hope Thomas wouldn't be an idiot and crash into him. What he did was obviously the least dangerous thing he could have done there. So, ultimately, Jensen was there through no real fault of his own, and the onus was on Thomas to wait for him to move out of the way before celebrating his goal (which he fully deserved to do, it was a great goal from a Norwich perspective). He didn't do that.

Now, all that being said, I am well aware that McShane is, just like Emery, very well known for sitting top players for disciplinary reasons without hesitation. Again, this is out of character for Thomas, and if McShane saw it even remotely close to the way I did, I have no doubt that Thomas got more than a few words from the coach, but that;s all this one incident really warrants. I have a lot of respect for the program over at Norwich, just because of the way they conduct themselves, and this isn't really enough to change that.

Re: Norwich hockey 2012-2013: Our thread closed before Owsego's

I can tell you one thing. If Thomas had pulled that stuff back in our day (or McShane's), the ice would've been littered with gloves and Thomas would've had more to worry about than some words from his coach. Too bad, 'cause he seems like a decent young man and his Dad is a great guy. Might've just got carried away

Looking again at what Kyle did ... my take was it had nothing to do with Jensen who just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time ... Thomas was playing to the fans in that section (I think that was the area where the band was, right?)... perhaps they had been on him and the rest of the Cadets prior to the goal? Not typical of Kyle ... but he is competitive and if he had heard enough #hit from that section maybe that helps explain it ...

Re: Norwich hockey 2012-2013: Our thread closed before Owsego's

Sorry to say, but good for Thomas. Maybe the Cards should take notice and get a little nasty once and a while. Ill never forget Mark Coletta going over to the RIT Corner Crew after he scored....turning backwards and pointing at his name. Get some emotion, some grit, some swag.

Re: Norwich hockey 2012-2013: Our thread closed before Owsego's

Yeah, that'll play for about two minutes with Emery. I agree though. I've seen a little more emotion this year compared to the last few, but still not enough. Thomas's antics would draw at least one game in street clothes from him. Anxious to see if McShane looks the other way. I bet he will.

Did you read his quote? Between Shawzy and Coletta they would have sat half their carreer.....

At the game last night I noticed that the band was pounding on the drums during the play of the game. They did this many times as the Cards made a rush up the ice, I thought this was was not to NCAA rules.Any other coments to this. One thing to play the band during the break in play which everyone does, but to start pounding the drums like a Indian raid during a up ice rush is another thing. If I recall this is illegal

It is - and it didn't happen - other than extending the band playing beyond a few moments once play resumed - though I do think they could stop quicker once play resumes.

Congratulations to former Norwich men's ice hockey standout Keith Aucoin on recording his 800th career American Hockey League (AHL) point on Sunday in a 5-0 win over Grand Rapids! Aucoin is in his 13th season as professional and currently plays for the Toronto Marlies, the AHL affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs. He now ranks 11th on the all-time AHL career points list. He is Norwich's all-time career points record holder with 240 points. (Photo Credit: Graig Abel)

Can anyone tell me where I can get tickets to the Northfield Savings Bank Tournament? I don't see them listed on the Norwich web site which is where I ususally get them. Thanks. Happy Holidays.
