Re: Norwich hockey 2012-2013: Our thread closed before Owsego's

Here is a new feature the Norwich Sports Information Dept. has added this year in Cadets Coaches Corner. We are doing weekly interviews with the head coaches of all 20 varsity sports here on campus and this week's episode chronicles Mike McShane and the men's hockey program. Enjoy!

Great Job to all envolved

You can start donating to the NU SID budget anytime. We're lucky we can afford pencils and pens.

Stop wasting money on pencils and pens - everyone knows they give them away in the hotels - just assign the teams to collect a few ;)

How many noticed that Dartmouth beat UVM by a 4-2 score last night in Hanover?

I had to chuckle to myself at the end of that....NU was a goal better!!!!

I never understood UVM's move to Hockey Excess (err...East). They don't fit either athletically (too low key) or academically (too high quality) as compared to the other programs there.

I'm always glad to see DC knock off the Cats :D

Re: Norwich hockey 2012-2013: Our thread closed before Owsego's

I never understood their decision to move to Hockey East and then do such a poor job.
Are they really a higher quality than BC, BU or Providence though?

I am not sure sure the problem is they are too low key athletically, maybe too inept administratively is a better definition.

Personally, I don't generally mind seeing UVM knocked off ever.

To me BC, BU, and Providence are faux high quality academic schools - I think of them as factory schools that are more geared to cranking out graduate degrees than they are to providing the kind of education that provides value to undergrad students. I used to think that educating undergraduates in an environment that allowed for diverse grad programs was UVM's goal - of course, Fogleberg may have changed the attitude/atmosphere - but in any case, it doesn't pain me to see them lose, especially if they can lose at the hands of the Big Green (or as a few of us old timers still think of them the Indians)

:eek:For shame, the NCAA will be beating down your doors for this! Just ask North Dakota!!!

(which in my opinion should have remained outside of the NCAA's control)

The Dartmouth change was a case of mid-70s political correctness - despite the the historic connection between the Eleazar Wheelock and the objective of providing an education for Indians. The vestiges of that connection remain in the availability of scholarships for "Native Americans" and some admissions preferences for "Native Americans."

My political leanings are definitely in the liberal direction, but I find that whole controversy stupid.
Now - some schools did not respect the heritage of the Indians at all - I think FSU and the Tomahawk Chop are appalling, but Dartmouth was respectful of the culture. Yes, they were the Indians when I was there, and they still are in my mind :D

I'm surprised the NCAA allows any teams from Oklahoma.

My last post on the subject, but.....

If you are a MAJOR football (or basketball) school, the NCAA will leave you alone. They are the typical bully, and will only pick on smaller schools. There is NO way that North Dakota and the Fighting Sioux logos are ANY worse than the FSU Seminole. Add to FSU what occurs on the field, and FSU not receivingthe same sanctions as NoDak is unfathomable.

Agreed - FSU is totally over the line. And now, as our old friend kashmunnie used to say

eom

Difference: FSU's use of the name and image (by the way... it's a "nickname", not a mascot... THAT would be disrespectful) is approved by the Seminole Tribe of Florida (and has been since FSU agreed in 1972 to implement more respectful traditions and representations). The NCAA listed it as one of the schools using "hostile" nicknames until 2005, when, with the Seminole Tribe of Florida already approving of the name, the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma's General Council voted to revoke the tribe's public opposition to the use.

Had UND's use of the Fighting Sioux been approved by both remaining Sioux tribes (Standing Rock and Spirit Lake, they did get the approval from the latter, but not the Standing Rock tribe), then the NCAA would have dropped their case against UND.

FSU's use of the name and image is approved by the affected people, UND's is not. How is that difference "unfathomable"?

(Can you tell I'm an FSU fan?)

ok, one more post....

Who gave the NCAA the right to determine what is a hostile or abusive name, and if they do have that right, what difference does it make who else approves(or disapproves)? There were no Illini to approve or disapprove of Fighting Illini. And I doubt that the Aztec descendents were ever asked their opinion of SDSU. So whose decisions were those? The NCAA's.
I've always had two issues with this whole mess. First, in my opinion, it is NOT up to the NCAA to determine what is hostile or abusive. That is a matter for the judicial and legislative systems. Second, if they are going to give themselves the authority to do that, then they should apply it evenhandedly. They have not.

In this case, as always with the NCAA, it comes down to $$. The NCAA maintains a tenuous hold over big time football, particularly the BCS teams. Why? Because the top teams are capable of telling the NCAA to butt out because they could survive without them.

I will never be convinced that the NCAA handled this anywhere near equitably. In the meantime, tomahawk chops and flaming spears are shining examples of Native (or aboriginal) Americans.
