Norwich Cadets Hockey 2013: The Final Countdown...

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2013: The Final Countdown...

Right on, I told the young man before our game that he had won the most important trophy.

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2013: The Final Countdown...

Larry, while I generally enjoy the sarcasm in your posts on the boards, I think a discussion congratulating a player for their high GPA is a special thing that needs no jokes to make it an enjoyable conversation. After all, Poulin, by virtue of his GPA, was undoubtedly the most successful STUDENT-Athlete in Lake Placid. DIII Sports care about an exercise in teamwork, competitiveness, and improvement upon and use of key skills, and that whole experience is a great part of the educational process for all of these young men. Clearly, Poulin is appropriately using the opportunity to exceed academic expectations with an eye toward securing his future.

Of these four teams that were in Lake Placid, the Student-Athlete who graduates with his degree, uses that degree to find a job, and then applies the skills he learned both as a student and as an athlete to excel in that position... he is the REAL winner. I just hope that all 105 student-athletes rostered on these 4 teams, including the 36 seniors between them, manage to do that.

Nate, I have had several 4.0 semesters - and some gen-ed filled ones that were not so great (one I think was a 2.39). Was I playing a varsity sport - no, but I did so as president of the International Student Association and a traveling member of the Student Association of the State University - and I also did a couple 4.0's as a grad student and working full time. I fully appreciate the effort it takes to accomplish a high GPA - it takes belief in yourself, dedication, sacrifice, determination and heck of a lot of hard work (and a major you truly enjoy) - BUT IF YOU CAN'T TAKE AN OBVIOUS JOKE - I feel sorry for you.

I said right away that I knew it was a joke. It's just that, as a current undergrad student who has never had a 4.0 semester and is currently struggling to get my GPA up in this last semester of my Senior year, I have to respect a student-athlete who is able to commit to the time required for participation in the sport and still get better grades than myself. I suppose the early hour of the day made me come off a bit too harsh for the situation - and for that I apologize - but I do think that there were ways for Larry to joke about it while showing a bit more respect. Besides, it was far fromt he most creative joke he's come up with here on USCHO ;)

Let's not let it detract from what I think is the most important point. This is somebody who has excelled in the classroom, and ultimately that is what is important. I think it is wonderful that such an award is presented. It does show the best side of college athletics. The ultimate goal for 99.7% of the players in D3 hockey has got to be the degree, and the pursuit of academic excellence. That's why I like DIII hockey and am so turned off by DI basketball.

Nate, no need to apologize, I can understand it being a sensitive subject. I mentioned "it takes belief in yourself, dedication, sacrifice, determination and heck of a lot of hard work (and a major you truly enjoy)", and unfortunately, I have known some for which belief in themselves is the most difficult. Everyone has some natural talent, a certain born predisposition toward something - learning/retention has always come easy for me - in many areas - yet in some I have found it impossible (such as learning a foreign language and spelling). Some (such as myself) are fortune enough that their natural talent is complementary with their desired career field, while others, despite having all relentless dedication, sacrifice, determination and immense work ethic in the world, they still have to struggle for good grades - it is they I have the greatest admiration for, for as long as they follow their heart and give it their best - they have won :) - and are probably the most exhausted ;)

As for joking with respect, perhaps the little ;) didn't sufficiently denote my satire, for which I apologize.

Anywhooooo.....

Congratulations Norwich on another great season. Your entire program is a class act and its always an honor to play against you.

In the end, what is really important is the love of the game, the love of competition and the fact that most of the players are true student-athletes, despite what happens in other sports and other divisions of the NCAA.

There is a reason that some teams, such as Norwich, Plattsburgh, and Oswego have such dedicated fan bases. Sometimes the sheer numbers of Oswego fans makes me cranky (and reminds me of how RIT used to dominated this board), but I really do appreciate the sheer enthusiasm of all of you.

To me hockey has a special culture to it that is not matched by any other sport.

You try living on this God-forsaken tundra. Gotta do something in the winter. :)

Well, 1400 or so of the people in Northfield dress identically most days......

Great season Cadets! What a run for the 2013 class....96-14-10, a national championship, 4 F4s. Can't imagine we'll see 4 years like that again, though I hope we'll see a better w% when it counts. #proud

College Hockey:
Norwich’s Mulvey captures 2013 Concannon Award

USCHO Staff Report • March 21, 2013

Norwich senior forward Colin Mulvey has been named the winner of the 13th Joe Concannon Award, presented annually to the best American-born college hockey player in New England playing at the Division II/III level.

Mulvey, a Worcester, Mass., native, led all Division III hockey players in America with nine game-winning tallies and has also been recognized as First-Team ECAC East, ECAC East player of the year and a First-Team All-American.

“In my coaching career, there are certain players who stand out for their exceptional work ethic, their determination and their perseverance [and] Colin Mulvey is one of those players,” said Norwich coach Mike McShane in a statement. “Colin’s approach to the game is, the harder he works, the better chance there is of improving. He is one of the most improved players I have ever coached. His physical conditioning is second to none. When he arrived at Norwich, he was small and thin. I projected him to be a fourth-line player for most of his career. He proved me wrong with his relentless work ethic.

“The statistic that best exemplifies Colin’s perseverance and determination to win are the D-III leading nine game-winning goals he scored. All of those goals came late in games and they came in the most pressured of situations. Off the ice, Colin is an exemplary student. He maintains a 3.7 GPA in civil engineering. I have no doubt that his perseverance and determination will be the earmarks of all his future success.”

The other Concannon Award finalists were Shaun Jameson (Wentworth), Keith Buehler (Wesleyan), Daniel Weiniger (Bowdoin), Joseph Caveney (Fitchburg State) and Travis Daniel (Massachusetts-Boston).

“This year’s level of intensity and competitiveness in all conferences set a new standard for excitement in hockey at the D-II/III levels in New England,” Gridiron Club of Greater Boston hockey awards committee chairman Tim Costello added. “Every nominee had an outstanding season. Our six finalists all truly showcased themselves and their schools throughout the New England area. They are great examples of the college and amateur athletes that Joe Concannon was dedicated to covering and recognizing during his career at the Globe.

“Colin Mulvey, with his superior hockey skills in one of the nation’s best conferences, his leadership and his sportsmanship, has most definitely earned a place among the outstanding group of distinguished past winners of the Concannon Award.”

Mulvey will be formally presented the award at the New England Hockey Writers’ Dinner on Tuesday, April 16 in Saugus, Mass.

Gonna be a very tough group to replace. Last year we lost a lot on defense - this year lots of offense. I am sure there are going to be some good players coming in.

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2013: The Final Countdown...

First of all:

Congratualations Colin Mulvey, you desearve the Concannon Award! We have watched you develope over the past four years into a class A player and person. I can remember saying on this site, "I wish Mulvey would get more ice time, he is the fastest and most determined player I have ever seen!" And I remember Prez replying something to the extent that he would in the future but now was doing exactly what McShane needed him to do. Again, way to go Colin, I admire your drive and hard work.

Second:

Prez, thanks for speaking up to "802", I can't imagine a reason for a post like that, and I certainly can't believe that Norwich or McShane would cut any players before any practices had started. All of those listed players have potential, and could be the star of the next season.

I agree. Total nonsense to put something like that out there.
