Norwich Cadets Hockey 2011-2012: In Search of a Title

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2011-2012: In Search of a Title

Well to be honest, I could live without the names and would actually love much simpler uniforms. White sweaters with a maroon"N" maybe trimmed in gold and visa versa for home uniforms.

Clean, simple and classic.

Honestly? I like the Middlebury sweaters for that very reason--they make a simple powerful statement. Even as a former loyal member of the Corp, I think our boys have reached a level where they do not need 21st Century cartoon figure graphics waving sabers to send a message. But then again I am old fashion.

I'm with ya Rook.

Take a look at Harvard's uniforms from the Frozen Fenway game. Those things are awesome. I'd be all for Norwich replicating that look.

Not bad really except I would like a prominent number in front or at least on both sleeves. I personally like the currnt logo or the Norwich Script on front and do think the guys deserve their names on the back, they work very hard all year (not just in the current season) and if they make the team, they should get the credit. Besides, I am very nearsighted and it woul help me match numbers with names early in the season.:)

That is the ticket. The Harvard Sweaters are close to what I am talking about--especially that simple band around the middle. Very similar to the Middlebury.

In my career I have worked closely with hundreds of national branding programs and the best are always based on CONSISTENT simplicity--which in itself is a powerful statement.

It seems especially true when it represents a skilled athletic program--amateur or professional. Once upon a time I was a Yankee's fan (until George fired Yogi) and found religion in Fenway. That said, the simplicity of the Yankees uniform--both home and away--has evolved into a branding statement that strikes fear in the hearts of their opponents.

And that is what this should be about--just as all those championship banners hanging from rafters at the Berg are designed to do--intimidate opponents who visit Northfield. They could just as easily be displayed in the lobby or else where--but they are an in your face statement to any visiting team that "you are about to play with the best". And in my mind--it works. But McShane doesn't need my advice as a fashion or branding consultant--not with his superb record.;)

I agree with you about all the banners. They are fantastic. Before I came to Norwich to work here I came up twice as an Elmira fan and remember looking up to the banners and being scared ****less about how good Norwich was. I'm a huge fan of the way Norwich does that over the way Oswego does things jamming everything onto three banners.

They still dont have banners up representing the other teams in the sunyac.

NU does so many little things (now electronic ticketing) right. Even all the advertising on the boards around the arena combined with the sold out crowds--just says that you when you come to play NU--you play the entire community.

Actually, going back 50 years ago when it was the entire Corp of Cadets and sanding room only in the old Taylor riding arena that same message was conveyed. So much so back in those days that the Bowdoin goalie told me on a visit, "I hate playing here. When you come to play Norwich--you come to play the whole school." Later that night he came out at the start of the second period obviously frustrated, skated the length of the rink and gave the Corp "the bird." He was wildly cheered for his courage and sense of humor.

As for the SUNYAC banners--maybe someday. For us older folks there is less of a connection but at least for my part there is a growing affection for the professional way all the teams from that Conference come and play on our pond. First class programs.

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2011-2012: In Search of a Title

I think Prez was referring to Oswego not having the SUNYAC teams bannersup...

Correct. Norwich doesn't have up ECAC East school banners either. But, I honestly don't know where they would put them especially with the leagues being vastly different on the men and women's sides.

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2011-2012: In Search of a Title

Norwich hockey coaches Mike McShane (men) and Mark Bolding (women) have their teams both ranked #1 in Division Three ... they join Commo and Healey on The Really Big Sports Show Thursday morning at nine on NSNradio.net .

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2011-2012: In Search of a Title

Looks like a repeat for them. Don't see much competition. Other teams have usual flaws.

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2011-2012: In Search of a Title

Ok fans, I know St. Mike's isn't our major competition this year, but I have to say, after a scoreless 1st period, the Cadets came out strong and played a decent game, albeit short 5 starters. Baker, Thomas, Forkey, Theida, and Lindensmith out and we come back with an 8-0 win. The more I see of Chris Czarnota, the more I like, 2 shutouts in 4 games, GAA of .565 and a save % of.970. The new players did very well although a little shakey in the 1st. Nice to see Emmond Bell back too, something like 3 assists on the weekend. The depth of this team is Norwich's salvation.

Emmond was back last weekend. But agreed. :)

It was nice to see the boys pull through with solid efforts in the 2nd and 3rd period. 1st period got off to a rough start to with the two penalties right off the bat including the 5 minuter major hitting from behind on Carpino..Killed it off though and got through the period.

While we were able to get by St. Michael's without those five...Middlebury could be a different story on Tuesday even though the Panthers aren't lighting the world on fire right now.

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2011-2012: In Search of a Title

Hated to see NU forced to play with so many key folks WIA but delighted to see the "newbees" on the squad step into the breach to fill the void--especially for the two youngsters along with veteran Own Carpino--who all posted their first goals of the season. We should see those hurt back--but we are also seeing some seasoning of some strong young talent. Smart coaching to put Chris Czanota in the nets and allowing him to do his stuff--especially in that scoreless 1st period. All these ingredients of mixing talent only makes the team's run for the gold the end of the season that much stronger :)

Now comes a real test for these new faces against Middlebury. And as Backdraft has asked, "What is the story over the mountain in that part of Vermont?
" Badly shut out by Plattsburg two weeks ago 7 zip and now by Bowdoin--so what is going on with the Panthers?

Also congratulations to University of New England, who if the box score is correct played Castleton to a nose to nose stand still right up to the last minute of the third period when the Spartan's fired in the winning goal. UNE seems to keep improving as the weeks go by--and we see them again at the end of the season. :o

Note to Prez: Last week the USCHOL schedule had posted the wrong start time for the UMass-Boston game. Yesterday it was the start time of the NU Womens' game. Can the folks in sports information somehow be sure to confirm posted USCHOL start times of all games and if they discover a problem spread the word of the corrected via USCHOL. I realize it is another headache but folks driving any distance to a game would be disappointed not to see the entire battle. And thanks for such a great job to all both on and off the ice who make both programs such a first class experience for the players, the students,a very proud alumni and all our fans.:D

A couple of comments on this weekends games: Chris Duszynski move Friday to swat away a St. Mike's defender and score was one of the best offensive plays I have seen this year. Saturday Colin Mulvey shot from the right circle over the St. Mike's goalie shoulder was also a great shot. No reference has been made to St, Mike's holding and interference in both games but I thought they got away with a lot where Norwich seemed to get called for everything. Add me to the list of fans who is impressed with goalie Chris Czarnota. Still hard to believe the World Women's hockey games will be played in a high school rink-Carins in South Burlington. Middlebury arena is outstanding and is only 30-40 miles down the road and Norwich not that much further.

Not to mention UVM

Not to mention UVM

The main rink will be UVM. Cairns will be the secondary site. I guess the committee didn't want to deal with the logistics of teams traveling away from the Burlington Area.

I think this is correct. Plus, I can't imagine the secondary rink needs to be that large considering the US and Canada will never play at Cairns.

Gutterson has to be one of the worst big time D1 arena's in the East. The bleacher seating just doesn't fit the $20. cost of a ticket for a season ticket holder. Plattsburgh, Middlebury, and Norwich all have great rink's although the seating isn't as high as Gutterson. Dartmouth's Thompson Arena isn't fancy but the seating is outstanding for a D1s game. To bad Dartmouth and Norwich didn't bid for the tournament.

In reference to Norwich it will be interesting to see how they do in the Middlebury game Tuesday. With a lot of key players hurt including Kyle Thomas a win will be a difficult task. Middlelbury has had a dissapointing season but the team I saw at the Prime link was very talented.
