Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2011-2012: In Search of a Title

3 goals by Thomas, were any REAL GOOD goals??? He has the speed but needs to look to dish it off when everyone is watching/chasing him leaving the others wide open, he needs that peripheral vision..not a hater this is what he needs to work on for sure..Good Luck in Fenway[/

THOMAS LAST GOAL WAS AN EMPTY NET GOAL BUT I DONT THINK ANY OTHER DIVISION 3 PLAYER COULD OF MADE THAT GOAL.
he is fast...to bad no skills comp this yr he could have gone as a D3 rep as Musselwhite did for Oz a few yrs ago..

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2011-2012: In Search of a Title

Friday night Kyle used his speed to wheel around the net and his strength to jam home the rap-around for the first goal of the game ... Then at the end in a one goal game his speed, hustle and athleticism turned an icing and faceoff in the Norwich zone into the game clinching empty net goal. I DO NOT understand the criticism this kid gets ... One of the top five forwards I've seen in my 14 years doing the games.

On a couple of other matters ...
We will be on the air on WDEV at 3:00 for the game on Friday afternoon ... before anyone asks no, unfortunately FCC rules will prevent us from setting up our transmitter to rebroadcast inside Fenway Park ... wish we could, but ...

Also the UMass-Boston website has Saturday's game at 3:00 pm ... if it changes we'll let you know.

I think there is a lot of jealousy going on there. I don't think there's a program out there in DI or DIII that doesn't wish Kyle played for them instead of NU. Give that guy open ice, and its instant offense. When he doesn't score, he draws so much attention from the opponents that they have no defense left to give to the other three lines...

I think hes an excellent player from the 4 or 5 games I have seen on the top notch Norwich netcast, just think he could be sooooo much better if he dished more, I think he needs to keep his head up a little more when he gets the puck...and YES I would Take him on Oz ANYTIME..................................how about now:D

So you're critiquing arguably one of the top players in the country from the non-business end of an internet connection!? You do realize how ridiculous you're appearing to those that have seen him in person for years? Any suggestions for Green Bay's QB?

I'll take the bait.

Mclean, Mattucci, K. Aucoin, P. Aucoin, Bellemare, Nagle, Cleaver, the list goes on. How soon we forget. I'm sorry, but Kyle is not even close to any of those guys as a COMPLETE player. And those are just a few NU guys, never mind some of the other stars from around the country that you've seen.

You know what's a really telling sign? He hasn't even been named to the first team of the ecac-east yet, let alone all-american. Those awards are voted on by the opposing coaches. Everyone on here seems to think that they all fear him so much, yet they don't even think he is one of the best in the conference.

This weekend was a perfect example. He scores two electrifying goals on Friday, but he was absolutely invisible on Saturday. Yes, he scored a fluky goal that bounced off a defender and in, but he was otherwise held completely in check by Fitchburg St. Fitchburg! He will not be an elite player until he comes to play on a more consistent basis. Also, I was embarrassed for hm after he taunted the Morrisville bench after Friday's 1st goal.

There has to be someone out there who agrees with me. Bueller?

How many D3 players were at a NHL development camp this summer?

Come on Derek what would they know? Heck McShane doesn't know what he's talking about either....

He has 2 or more points in nearly 50% of his games this far. Only has been held scoreless 3 out of 11 games.....Pretty much on track as McLean and Aucoin did in their second season.

Actually he's not even close to their pace. That piece is not debatable. Aucoin had 240 points, and McLean had around 220.

Why are you posting on a little DIII hockey board? With your great hockey knowledge (obviously more then McShane and the several NHL scouts who have looked at Thomas) you would think you would have much more to do then worry about some DIII hockey player...

Why am I not entitled to my opinion, yet you are?

You made a comment that wasn't close to fact, and I called you on it. Why is it that you have to make personal insults when someone disagrees with you?

Seeing how Thomas is a JUNIOR and I said what they did in their SECOND season might be a clue I know he isn't on par point wise with the two....

Because obviously you feel your opinion is right over the majority of people, of which includes several DIII coaches and NHL scouts. You want to keep tossing your two pennies in when people with a lot more knowledge have expressed theirs several times, yet you continue to try and make Thomas look like just another DIII player when he clearly isn't. Anyone with any hockey knowledge knows Thomas's potential. Its not personal, obviously you think in your mind you know more then his coach and several NHL scouts. Obviously a compliment of your hockey intelligence.

This is starting to sound like an Oswego thread.

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2011-2012: In Search of a Title

Kyle Thomas is the Alexander Ovechkin of Division-III hockey. He's dangerous when he has open ice. Definitely fun to watch.

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2011-2012: In Search of a Title

I may not be as dumb as you all think I am.

I'm not surprised that scouts are looking at him. His speed alone can turn heads. But, you have to remember that scouts are judging one thing only: POTENTIAL. They see his speed and hands and shot, and they think, wow, maybe we should take a shot on this kid. Maybe we can teach him to play within a system. Maybe we can make him more responsible defensively. Then, maybe he'll be a really great player. Scouts aren't coaches. They don't necessarily care about the present. They want to predict the future. Does Thomas have more potential than any other D3 guy. Probably. You just can't teach wheels like that. But is he one of the best ever at this level? Absolutely not. Is he the best right now? I still say no way.

You guys have to look at the bigger picture.

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2011-2012: In Search of a Title

WOW what a uproar:eek:...Bottom line fans nobody is saying he is NOT a top player, whether people have watched him on the net or in person, personally we all have different takes,I was just saying he would be more complete if he looked to dish when everyone on the ice chases him, I am sure he would get more pts and Norwich would benefit for sure, I am sure it will come with time..

There is no doubt that Kyle is a good player, maybe a great player, but he can not be compared to McLean and the likes. Kurtis had 28g, 24a, and had 1.62pts/game in his Freshman year. Kyle had 23g, 9a, and 1.03pt/game in his Freshman year. As Sophomores, Kurtis was 25g, 23a for 1.66pts/game while Kyle was 16g, 12a for .97pts/game. And so on and so on.

However, Kyle is showing increases in his maturity and ability to play as a team as evidenced from his increase in assists over the past 2 years. He currently has 9 goals and 9 assists in 11 games this season. You can see him looking to divert attention to himself while looking for the open man, you can definately see the wheels turning in his head to figure out who has the better shot. I am sure that is part of McShane's strategy, to use Kyle as a diversion to create open opportunities for other players. I think George Commo even mentioned that Friday or Saturday night during his broadcasts of the games. By scoring an impressive goal, he also excites the fans and his team mates, edging them on to victory so to speak. So if he scores or assists on a goal, the outcome of the game benefits the team, which I believe is part of the definition of a "good player". Hopefully all players will become more complete players every season that they play.

The one area that I think Kyle still needs to work on, is his ability to back off when provoked by an opposing player. I don't know if it was Friday or Saturday night's game, but the opposing player was "talking" to Kyle after a shot on goal and it was obvious it wasn't a nice conversation. Thankfully, Pier-Olivier Cotnoir, came over and seperated the two before anything came from the "talk". That too, is an example of a "complete" player and why Cotnoir is an assistant captain.

Norwich has a history full of impressive players, all different and unique, but talented all the same. One of Norwich's greatest assets though, is that they clearly play as a team and support each other 24/7 and that is what makes them a Great team. For instance, after Nevin Lawler's first goal of the season, the team acted as if they had just won the NCAA's, supporting each other 110%. I think that is evident by their success in the NCAA'a consistantly through the 15 years I have been watching them play. Thanks for all the years, Cadets, you are very entertaining! :) Good luck this weekend and enjoy the honor of playing at Fenway, you all deserve it.:D

It's awful extremely tough to make comparisons to today's D-III game to close to 15 years ago when Keith played and 10 when Kurtis was playing.

The game has changed immensely since then. There are more good teams nowadays and the talent pool has started to spread out rather than just be concentrated on a few teams. Any night you can beat by any other team in D-III if you don't come to play. That didn't used to be the case. There isn't as much goal scoring as there was back then as well.

All these factors play into why no one IMHO will ever approach such records again nearly anywhere. Great D-III players are scoring 40 points in a season nowadays and only a handful reach that mark.

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2011-2012: In Search of a Title

PrezdeJohnson9 has made a valid observation about the changes in the game over just the last decade or so--since Clever and Accoin played. Actually, this is the second time this season that I have heard almost the same thing said about the changes in the game.

The first was in radio interview before the holidays that Puck Voice had with Mike McShane about today's headgear. Mike said he felt that injuries were increasing due in part to the speed and skill sets of today's players versus those who played even a decade ago. I think it is fair to say that any change in speed, etc. which are subsequently combined with a growing pool of talent throughout Div III will likely change how any individual player's statistics measure up against history. Want to start a real fight? Just ask who... Ruth...Williams...or Aaron... was the better home run hitter? Good luck.

But more important than how well Thomas "plays with others" are this season team's statistics which speaks to more than how many wins...how many losses...or even how the Cadets rank in the USCHOL poll.

The statistics say that as individuals--even Cadet standouts like Janke and Thomas are not the most productive players in DIII hockey. Among the Div III scoring leaders Janke is ranked 24th (19 pts.) and Thomas is ranked 34th (18 pts). Thomas is ranked 20th--among the scoring leaders while Janke is ranked #20 for assists.

The more crucial statistics is that the Cadets are 10-0-1 not because of individuals but because they are a team, which happens to be ranked in Div III...8th in Offense... 3rd in Defense... 3rd in Power Play goals...and thankfully not even mentioned on the chart for penalty minutes. Our two goalies are not mentioned yet neither have posted a loss. And to that add those 20 Cadet players have all shared in this team effort. Through the first half of the season among those 20--each has gotten at least one assist so far--which is just a bit less than the total team pace of the last two very successful seasons.

Personally, I think I will leave this issue of Kyle Thomas alone, watch and enjoy and leave the knit picking to "the experts". :) And rely on what Puck Voice--who has maybe seen more NU teams and games than any of us (other than Cadet Crosby) and remarked, "I DO NOT understand the criticism this kid gets ... One of the top five forwards I've seen in my 14 years doing the games."

Neither do I George. Neither do I.
