Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2010-2011: Title defense time.

Yes and no

Are they looking for a new sponsor for the T/A? and...isn't the T/A committed to it for this coming year anyway?

To be honest I'm shocked the Times-Argus has lasted this long as the title sponsor for the tournament with the state the newspaper industry is in today.

As an employee in the industry, I can honestly say I should have seen the writing on the wall back during my freshman and sophomore year of college when everyone was talking about how badly newspapers were declining.

The newspaper that I joined here in Gloversville went from having a four-person sports staff that is reponsible for covering 13 high schools and a local community college to having two staff members for almost two months before I started in early December to bring it back to three.

There are no plans to hire a fourth reporter.

There has been a very high turnover rate in the four news reporter positions and now two sports reporter positions over the last few years here.

The news staff has been a revolving door and they haven't been able to keep the same four reporter together for more than six months in quite a few years.

The newspaper hired myself, one guy who just quit two weeks ago, another news reporter all within one months time back at the end of last year to finally bring the staff back up to where they like it.

However, our news editor just put in his two weeks to follow his wife, the bread winner in the family to Florida for her new job.

Elmira used to have the Star Gazette Invitational every year and then that went by the wayside 10+ years ago now.

That was the beginning of the SG's reduction in staff (RonT knows more about this than I do) but now the Elmira paper isn't even put together in Elmira anymore. All the editors are in Binghamton now at a joint facilty that they built 5ish years ago that prints three of four different local daily papers all at that facility.

Hope the TBN Norwich Tournament can find a title sponsor to replace the Times-Argus because that is one of the most well-run D-III tourneys in the country. Norwich does an excellent job with it.

(Of course...we're owned by Ogden Newspapers...which is the same notorious organization that owns none other than the Pittsburgh Pirates...

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2010-2011: Title defense time.

The Barre Montpelier Times Argus and the Rutland Herald (the second largest daily newspaper in the U.S. state of Vermont (after the Burlington Free Press)) are both owned and published by Herald Association – R. John Mitchell publisher. Even in today’s economy they should easily be able to afford – as part of their promotions budget – to sponsor the tournament. I cannot believe a decision to discontinue sponsorship would be based solely on economics. The Times Argus bills itself as “We Are Vermont”, which certainly includes more than just Northfield. That said having sponsored it since its inception in the 1999-2000 season it must be a result of Potsdam’s 3-2 shootout victory that did it in or maybe Middlebury and the NESCAC are behind it.

IMO, it should be sponsored by the Northfield Country Club ;)

Norm I think you may not be 100% right on this one. Print media accross the country is hurting. I recall a couple of years ago the Rocky Mountain Times folded in Dever-who would of anticipated that and didn't a paper go out of business in Seattle. Add that to a number of magazines that have folded and the industry is not a pretty picture. I subscribe to the TA and some days it does not have much content except local high school sports that I have no interest in (would be interested in NU and Castleton sports).

Actually, it was the Rocky Mountain News that folded in Denver. It was a very well respected newspaper. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer survives as an advertiser supported (free access) newspaper, although much reduced in staff and content from its former self.

The T/A has reduced the size of the paper it is printed on (I think it is the world's narrowest paper), and continues to cost more (with less news) than the BFP. They are also planning on starting to charge to access their website.

My personal opinion (and what other kind of opinion is there) is that the downfall of the T/A started when they moved from the niche as one of the few afternoon newspapers in Vermont (which was the one thing that distinguished it from the BFP for me) to a morning paper.

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2010-2011: Title defense time.

Related subject I believe the Rutland Herald (Times Argus) also suported the Castleton Thanksgiving tournament. I wonder what the status of that support is now?

Have no fear, Norwich will have their holiday tournament and it will be run first class as it always has been.

And hopefully Adrian won't behave like that Canadian school that came in and trashed their locker room after getting blown out twice.

:D :D :D

Does anyone have an idea when the Norwich or ECAC East schedules usually get posted

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2010-2011: Title defense time.

I'm almost certain that if Norwich and Adrian meet ...it'll be on New Years Day. I think the Cadets will play Nichols on New Year's Eve.

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2010-2011: Title defense time.

Game times for tournament are Friday 1 and 4 with Norwich playing Nichols in the 4 o'clock game. Not sure yet on Times for Saturday

Any info on more goalies and defensemen coming to Norwich in a month. Last time I counted they only had 5 defensemen and 1 goalie that has been publicly announced. Also any chance that Castleton will play Norwich the first game to open the new rink improvements since they play the Cadets twice this year?

Only if it were an exhibition game (interlock teams can't play games that count before the first weekend of league play) and I don't think that's gonna happen. I'd guess it would be the last game before semester break.

Actually the women's team will play the first game in the new digs. The men will play UNE at home to open their season. We are planning a big pre-game event in the addition. Plan to be there-----there will be free food:) :) except for "Hawk", he will have to pay.:D :D

That is no way to treat a member of the Norwich official Blue Line Club. :)

And not paying off your bet is no way for a BLC member to act. In fact it is a violation of our honor code:rolleyes:
