Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2010-2011: Title defense time.
To be honest I'm shocked the Times-Argus has lasted this long as the title sponsor for the tournament with the state the newspaper industry is in today.
As an employee in the industry, I can honestly say I should have seen the writing on the wall back during my freshman and sophomore year of college when everyone was talking about how badly newspapers were declining.
The newspaper that I joined here in Gloversville went from having a four-person sports staff that is reponsible for covering 13 high schools and a local community college to having two staff members for almost two months before I started in early December to bring it back to three.
There are no plans to hire a fourth reporter.
There has been a very high turnover rate in the four news reporter positions and now two sports reporter positions over the last few years here.
The news staff has been a revolving door and they haven't been able to keep the same four reporter together for more than six months in quite a few years.
The newspaper hired myself, one guy who just quit two weeks ago, another news reporter all within one months time back at the end of last year to finally bring the staff back up to where they like it.
However, our news editor just put in his two weeks to follow his wife, the bread winner in the family to Florida for her new job.
Elmira used to have the Star Gazette Invitational every year and then that went by the wayside 10+ years ago now.
That was the beginning of the SG's reduction in staff (RonT knows more about this than I do) but now the Elmira paper isn't even put together in Elmira anymore. All the editors are in Binghamton now at a joint facilty that they built 5ish years ago that prints three of four different local daily papers all at that facility.
Hope the TBN Norwich Tournament can find a title sponsor to replace the Times-Argus because that is one of the most well-run D-III tourneys in the country. Norwich does an excellent job with it.
(Of course...we're owned by Ogden Newspapers...which is the same notorious organization that owns none other than the Pittsburgh Pirates...
Yes and no
Are they looking for a new sponsor for the T/A? and...isn't the T/A committed to it for this coming year anyway?
