Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2010-2011: Title defense time.

The third goalie for the Cadets is Sean Gerich ... he was 1st Team All State HS Hockey Goalie in Illinois at St. Rita High in Chicago, leading them to the state championship, winning the title game 3-1 before almost 7,000 fans at the United Center.
On the season he went 30-3-3 with a 1.75 goals against average and 4 shutouts.
He is a Rook in the Corps ... class 2014.

Seems he is quite the writer, even having to write about his own performance (page 7 here).

Gerich making some key saves gave Rita the momen-
tum. The offense came from two unexpected sources.
Within 45 seconds freshmen Keith Burchett and Chris
Foley would score to make it a 3-1 lead. At the end of
two the shots on goal were NTG 21 Rita 7 but a 3-1 lead
for Rita. NTG came out with a mission at hand scoring
two goals to tie the game up at 3 in the third period. At
the 5 minute mark Hero Henry (Capouch) snipped the
goalie to give the team a 4-3 lead. Both teams would
play their hearts out for the rest of the time. A clear out
of the zone with six seconds left gave the Mustangs a
W.
The team mobbed goalie Gerich, who had made 35
saves, and were heading to the United Center to play
either Marist or Loyola Gold. Loyola rolled over Marist
winning 6-1, leading to a battle of Northside vs. South-
side on the Westside.

For Norwich fans it is going to very interesting watching the goalie development. With the Primelink, Southern Maine, Castleton, and Manhattanville/Adrien coming up on the schedule soon whoever is in goal is going to be tested by some very strong teams. Sean Gerich is going to be a very busy man with the Corp of Cadet duties as a freshman with there PT, hockey dry land training (maybe one in the same), college studies, and regular Army training in the summer. Maybe they will give him a break and cut out a couple of hikes. I not sure how much time Norwich hockey players devote to hockey on a weekly basis once the regular season gets close but it has to be a lot.

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2010-2011: Title defense time.

Nice to see the Norwich Hockey team participating in the Labor Day Parade today. The Town people certainly enjoyed seeing the players and a number of the players were shaking hands with the spectators. These boys are a class act and appreciate the support they receive from the locals.
Another thing which was also very impressive was looking down the parade route and seeing the long line of Corp of Cadets marching through town

Yes the Cadets looked special, particularly to an old member of the Corp of Cadets. And Hawk, freshmen do not have Army duties in the summer following their freshmen year.

I checked out the new addition during halftime of the football game. Fans are going to be very happy with the added space which includes snackbars and very large bathroom facilities. Not 100% complete but looks very close to completion. I assume there is going to be an open house once the addition is complete. Too bad the Primelink is not at Norwich this year.

Best of luck to Gerich. He was outstanding last season, and the top tier of Illinois high school hockey aint half bad, as evidenced by their showings in the Chicago Showcase tournament. After Minnesota and Mass, I'd say the top Illinois teams are on par with Michigan and Wisconsin. The team St. Rita beat in the state semis, New Trier, is often ranked in the top 20 nationally (but how accurate can national high school rankings be anyways?)

I hope he challenges for some playing time at Norwich this season, but I'm a little surprised he didn't choose to spend a season in Juniors or a PG year at an eastern prep school.

Connor Olvany went straight from New Trier HS to Williams and, as a junior this past season, was second-leading scorer in the team, trailing only Alex Smigelski. That doesn't necessarily mean Gerich will be a huge success but I wouldn't write him off just because he is coming from Ill. HS hockey . .

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2010-2011: Title defense time.

You have no idea how good Kyle Thomas is, then. Even I could earn an assist by putting the puck on his stick - and I can't really skate

And anyone who was paying attention should know it should be "PurpieGoldie" and not "Purpie_and_Goldie".

"yo purpie goldie...keep your quarter and try buying a few vowels."

Best line ever on this board.

Norwich University: Get used to seeing my ugly mug.

See ya in a few weeks.

This is a little late, but, welcome to the "Hill" Prez. I am sure you will enjoy being part of the Norwich family.

I don't know what Charlie's role will be now that Prez is there, but in case it changes, I would like to take this opportunity to thank him for all the information and insights he has provided these last few years. It has been great to have someone with cadet and Norwich background on the inside keeping us expatriates (sp?) informed. Hope it continues!

In spite of what Hawk says, we appreciate your info. I would not be anxious to give info to someone who owes me a steak dinner either.

Didn't know you were Canadian - I thought you were from Horseheads, NY
I had two good guys I went to school with that were from Horseheads. Did you know that the Celtics actually played an exhibition game there in the 70's???

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2010-2011: Title defense time.

Good news to some bad news to others, I will be the SID for at least a year if the health holds up. Prez will be an assistant SID :)
