Norwich Cadets '13-14 - A New Look Forward

I am considering not going. I don't have much desire to see a game from the other side of the rink, and is the only regular season game in the history of Krietzberg arena to not be included in my season tickets.
Come on Jerry, sit in the corner on the west side instead of the east
side ... you'll get the same view and you'll be closer to us!

There is no way this first game is sold out. I just tried to get seats online and can't find even one empty in any section. What's up Prez and/or Charlie?

Re: Norwich Cadets '13-14 - A New Look Forward

Because it is open seating you purchase a standing room ticket come in and sit down.

Wow, no comments about tonight's game? IMO looks like they have some more speed, but continue to have defensive lapses and an empty power play unit. They also took too many penalties and I am sure McShane wasn't happy with that. On the up side, I thought the freshman played well and thought Russell and Piacentini were pretty impressive. All four lines scored and the first line of Janke, Gorman and Duszynski was outstanding. Despite 4 assists for Whitell, he scares the heck out of me because he keeps getting out of position defensively. Overall, for a "reloading year" (Duszynski's term vs rebuilding), Norwich seems to be in pretty good shape and with a bit of work on the above mentioned areas, they should remain a serious contender in Div. III hockey.

From my living room, the defensive lapses scared me a bit. I'm a bit concerned about goal tending. I don't think I know who I would pick as the primary. A couple of the goals looked as though the goalie could have stopped them despite the defensive lapses. I agree that Whitell frequently overplays his position on offense and is left scrambling to catch up. It looks like he pinches without having thought about who is covering his point. That can lead to disaster against a good team - which Plymouth was not.

Got to say I don't think the singling out of Whitel is fair he was not alone ... several of the veteran D-Men got caught tonight. I really think the atmosphere in the rink and the wild fire engine tone of the game contributed to it. Look at it this way ... coaches love to have things to work on in practice and Coach McShane is going to have stuff to work on defensively ... On the plus side Dusynski was great and I loved the frosh ... Peletier, Russell, Stewart and Piacentini in particular!

With so many freshmen playing key roles for Norwich I was very happy with the results and the play of the new guys. Of course giving up those odd man rushes against a good team like Plattsburgh will cost you but the Cadets seem to have more offensive players and lines capable of scoring than I have seen lately. Paul Russell, William Pelletier, Trevor Stewart, and Tyler Piacentini are a few if freshmen I noticed that stood out. For a first game I though Brian Rowland had a good game on D. Of the goalies I though Matic Marinsek played well.

I thought the team looked fast and confident - new players seemed to gel well with the seasoned cadets. Was fun to watch tho I miss watching the Colin/Tory magic! Thought Ryan played well last night. Was more confident and fast than last season and made solid passes. Think its going to be another very fun season of Cadet hockey!!

Russell was impressive for sure. I know there were lots of defensive lapses - not just Whitell, but his mistakes kind of stood out to me. Of course, given his size he does stand out. The other one who stood out in a good way was Hale - he had a good game. Now I have to go by your eyes for the next few games.

Re: Norwich Cadets '13-14 - A New Look Forward

Despite a few defensive lapses, I thought Whitell had a pretty good game. Like Icequeen said, he looked more confident back there. The D that impressed me was Hale. He was involved offensively, composed with the puck, and played with a little grit, which the D seemed to lack last season. Rowland also had a good first game and looked comfortable alongside Hale. Yes the D in general had a few lapses, but hey it's the first game. These things will be corrected. As for the forwards, they looked very quick. Everyone knew that Janke, Duszynski, and Gorman would produce, and that they did. What was impressive was that all 4 lines produced. That's a great sign for things to come. The new faces that impressed were Russell and Pelletier. Russell has good speed, and Pelletier brought some good offensive skill and some grit. Nice to see McEleney picking up a couple of goals. I think more consistency between the pipes is needed. All in all a good start, and I look forward to an exciting season.

4 goals against and 27 shots on goal allowed were addressed at practice this morning.
As past NCAA's have proven, a good team that gets 25+ shots on Norwich stands a very good chance of coming home with a victory.
