Season is over so feel free to share your additional thoughts.
Let me state that these are my opinions, feel free to disagree on any (or all) points. I won’t say much about my experiences with NU hockey but IYKYK.
There have been far too many unnecessary icings, this past weekend causing a timeout in the second period. I can understand missed passes causing some, and some absolutely necessary ones. But far too often it happens for no decent reason. Practice tossing the puck out without icing it.
The players do have a fair amount of talent, and at times play as well as anyone. When things start to go bad, they tend to stay that way for a while.
On offense, they can cycle the puck effectively, but when the opponent makes adjustments, there doesn’t seem to be alternatives. When they dump it in and chase, and they never get to keep the puck, try something else.
On defense, when pressured at all, the go to seems to be holding the puck on the boards, or make a hurried and/or blind pass. It often looks like they have time to make a play. In the offensive end, they can cycle d-men’s first option appears to be to skate backwards instead of keeping the puck in.
Conditioning seems to be a problem at times as well. Since there isn’t much interaction with “outsiders”, it’s hard to tell the reason for that. As far as physicality goes, it was hopeful to see some checking as part of the game, but there should be more of that.
The last thing I’ll bring up is coaching. I’ve been a fan of Norwich Hockey since the days of the Simonetti’s and others in Taylor Arena. Sometimes they weren’t the most talented teams, but they were put in position to compete by the staff. ImHO, that isn’t happening right now. With as much emphasis (and talk) of being a great defensive team, that just isn’t working.
I could probably go on, but there season is over. A new conference next year, but I’m afraid it will be more of the same. Things are trending down, and if it goes any further, it will be tough to reverse it.
Not going to compare this coach to previous one except to say they are all different, but some coaching strategies are far more effective, and you need to build an actual culture.
