Norwich 2022-23 Back to Normal (ish)

Norwich locks up the #2 seed and could have at least two home playoff games. Vital for how they’ve faired away from Kreitzberg this year.

It’s do or die time now.

MAYBE if everything fell perfectly and they lost to Hobart in the finals they might be able to snag a pool C? But my gut say they need to win the tournament to have a chance.

I should add, finishing 2nd in the regular season in as tough of a conference as the NEHC should be a noted accomplishment. This is not the 2003 ECAC East anymore.

However, I'm fully aware the expectation for Norwich hockey is to win the league and be in the tournament every year and that will still certainly be a tall order.

The good news is the goaltending situation is very strong and all you have to do is score one more goal than the other team at this point of the year.

1-0 and 2-1 wins matter just the same as 5-0 and 6-1.

Given the goal scoring unpredictability, it wouldn't shock me if Norwich loses in the first round (that would be a major disappointment on home ice) but I could also see them going all the way and pulling off the upset against Hobart with the right bounce of the puck in the league finals.

Exciting time of the year is upon on us! I'll be following along for sure and maybe even try and make it to the quarterfinal or semifinal if things work out for me at work and at home.

It's actually pretty darn similar. There's one team running roughshod through the league beating teams by 7, 8, 9, 10, 12 goals of a given night and then there's a few NCAA bubble teams and then the rest. The only difference is that Norwich used to do what Hobart is doing. The league doesn't feel like a parity league to Hobart right now and it only feels that way to us becuase Norwich is just plain worse than they used to be.

Listen I'm as excited as anyone that I get to hopefully watch a couple more live hockey games but let's not make absurd comparisons between a National Championship Norwich team and this team.

There are, however, FAR more schools putting resources into hockey than there was 20 years ago.

Regardless, all the coaches at Norwich were told (again, last week) by the acting administration that their plan to address the deficit is to scale back financial aid and they “won’t get the same students they have in the past”.

Start praying the new President reverses that quickly when he gets into office.

You know what they say about excuses...

It's damn near endless around here. I get that the factors are real but the fact of the matter is the team isn't as good and there are plenty of steps that people in charge don't seem to be taking to change it. Pack the rink with fans and students the next two weeks and win a couple of damn hockey games would be a good start!

No doubt. I just think we’re being really naive to think that the ladnscape changes in college hockey haven’t affected Norwich. For quite a while, NU had their pick of elite talent in the northeast and now there are far more viable options for kids.

I also would love to see a packed rink, but I don’t know how we blame Ellsworth/the program for that. Attendance was declining during the McShane years too.

Meanwhile the GD club game was jammed with students this past weekend. Irritating.

Funding for the Ellsworth experiment needs to conclude. He lacks intensity and is extremely disagreeable, just listen to his responses during the Coach’s Corner. Why is he immune to all these theories floating around regarding NU’s decline?

Agreed, and your data shows it started during the McShane era. There are also posts on threads all over these boards talking about declining attendance at a bunch of schools.

I had conversations with another active poster here about declining attendance/empty seats way before Ellsworth took over.

Nonetheless, it absolutely SUCKS to see an, essentially, empty student section every weekend in Kreitzberg when it used to be so strong.

Ticket prices, streaming, town/team relationship, older fan base, corps/civilian divide, administration enforcing strict student conduct policies, inability to buy a ticket to a game more than 5 days in advance, season ticket holders not using seats, lack of in-game entertainment, loss of “traditional” rivals in nescac opponents with interlock ending (Bowdoin/colby used to be a massive weekend), lack of scoring etc

The list goes on and on.

Mike’s average over the first 17 years of record keeping is 1,593 in attendance, since Mike it is only 1,205. Mike’s worst year for attendance is better than all but Ellsworth’s first, which was boosted both by the novelty of a new coach and the fact that team should have won a championship ( a team built by Mike).

Theres about 100 seats in the sections where the students sit and it's amazing what 1-2 full sections can do for the atmosphere. The difference in feel in this rink between 1,000 and 1,500 is astronomical never mind 2-3k which some playoff games used to get.

1) Well they would have won it that year if Ellsworth hadn’t been running his crazy schemes and it hadn’t been in that horrible rink.
2)Big and slow is no way to go
3)Quote from an opposing player. “Hobart is the new Norwich”

Frustrating

A change needs to be made.

Well, it was a packed arena.
and how about that defensive team that’s been built?
Terrible d zone most of the night, in the 26th game.
that was just awful.
