Norwich 2021-2022 - A New Era

Ok, I was waiting for someone else to talk about Friday's game vs NEC, but I guess most posters are as lost for words as I am. We had some great open net chances that the guys just couldn't finish, including O'Mara's very loud post hit with a wide open net. Too his credit, he never stopped trying and put the puck in later on in the same offensive zone swarm, I'm liking his style of play and perserverence. Becker had a tough night but that happens and he got better as the game progressed. Atherton played his best game so far and again I was impressed with Mike Mackensie. Delvecchio also showed a lot of perserverence and made some great moves. Defense improved getting the puck out of their zone and the forecheck had some good steals. If it weren't for the Norwich "I will try" attitude, this game could have been a loss.

Kudos to the NEC style of play Friday which has cleaned up somewhat from the past "goon" style of play they were known for.

So with all the improvement we are seeing with this young team, why did we tie? Is there a Friday Night Tie Curse on the Cadets? Is it nervousness for the first game of the weekend that disappears on Saturday night? I'm not sure about the curse but I sure would like to see them win next Friday:D. I do believe that the NEHC has a very competitive group of teams and the days of "for sure Wins" are gone. Yes we are 3-0-3 overall, but the rest of the league has at least 1 loss to their names. We have had no losses and should take encouragement from that. Whatever the case, Coach Ellsworth will continue ironing out the wrinkles and we'll see a Friday Night Win very soon. Go Cadets!
 
Anybody know what will happen to the First Light Tournament at Middlebury if they continue to have issues with Covid? Would the game be moved to Norwich or Plattsburgh and a new team added to the competition? Hope none of this happens but "What If"?

Every team is also good...the parity in the NEHC and Division III in general is at an all-time high. I continue to reiterate that there are 23 new players on this team from the last time Norwich played meaningful games. It's going to be a work in progress all season. All that matters is playing your best hockey in February and March and Coach Ellsworth has more than proven his team's have done that during his time as the head coach here. There are going to be bumps and bruises along the way, but realize, this league is VERY VERY good this year and every night is going to be a battle. To not lose a game through the first six is a pretty good accomplishment in my opinion since every other team in the league already has a loss or multiple.

There's no way a new team can be added unless you find a team that already had two games cancelled. (Hmmm, that was Potsdam; now wouldn't that be ironic...). Because, a team can't play more than 25 regular season games, so you just can't add a team.
 
Wasn't Potsdam one of the original 4 that played in the Prime Link? If they are available someone should give them a call and put them on "Standby". I just don't want this coming weekend canceled or postponed. Let's hope Middlebury gets cleared from the dreaded CoVid 19-20-21.

Yes, that’s why I said it would be ironic, especially since they were "kicked out" of the tournament.

Potsdam, like most teams, have games scheduled over the holiday weekend. They are in the Canton Tournament.

Again, you just can’t add a team. And no team is going to go on "standby."
 
As it’s still college football season I’ve been following but not watching the team thus far. But I was able to turn the game on during the second period last night. There are definitely a lot of new names, but I thought we looked pretty good. ;)What’s the angst about? (wink/sarcasm)

In all seriousness, great win. As alluded to earlier, Coach Cam is all about the process and about playing your best hockey in March. With all those new names I think the team is going to go through some growing pains, but by this point we all should have complete faith that we’re going to see this team continue to get better and better as the season progresses.

Does anybody know what will happen in the First Light Tourney if all the teams lose one game? Will they determine the winner by the number of goals scored totaled?
 
Guess we don't need to worry about all teams losing one game, MSOE lost to Plattsburgh in 5 min OT 4-3. Decent game by both squads although I think Plattsburgh had a little more energy towards the end of the game. Good luck tonight Cadets:)
 
Cadet win 5-2, yippee!!! MVP- Ouderkirk, Tourney Rookie-Kerner, Tourney Goalie- Albano. Super impressed with new players MacKensie, Delvecchio, Doggett, O'Mara, Kerner, Nagle, Galotti and Chapman...they are looking like seasoned vets all ready. Albano is in my opinion, the best goalie for the team at this point, doesn't lose his cool under pressure and is always sharp. Best two games of the season yet! Thanks for the entertainment guys!

Where are all the posts from Norwich supporters after a good 2 win weekend? Hope all are well and just too full from Thanksgiving feasting:)!
 
Yes, I would like to see some. Thanks to all you posters who have boosted my enjoyment of Norwich hockey with your comments. It is getting difficult for my old eyes to follow the players on a small screen. Any posts are really helpful.

Well as on the Oswego thread the posters are few and far between, we have been on a downward spiral on this site for awhile now..

I just don't understand why the posts have gone down this year, not just the Norwich threads, but all the threads in general. Last year, most posters were bemoaning the lack of games, me included! Now, we actually have games to talk about and very few are commenting. I thought folks would be as excited as I am about having a real season. Really hope it's not because folks are sick from Covid 19, or worse yet have passed away due to this virus...RIP Remy - PSUChamps2001. At any rate, I hope things improve as the season progresses and attendance at the games increase. The empty areana in Middlebury last week was really sad, although I understand why people did not go due to the virus outbreak on Campus. Wish this bug would bug out!

Good luck tonight Cadets, keep the winning and improvement going. Last Sunday, the passing game got better for both defense and offense, but there is still a way to go on that. You have got the talent and are really beginning to gel as a team. Hope Atherton starts tonight and has a shutout. I know...I'm not just asking for much, I'm asking for everything! Go Wick!

Wish Granted! Great win by the Cadets tonight. I agree the passing and teamwork are definitely starting to show more.

I don’t understand how D3 refs are so unsure of themselves that they let a goalie call his own interference but that was pretty poor calling of a game. Not to mention the refs didn’t even have the onions to signal the goal off. Glad Cam gave it to them.

USM looked gassed after the 2nd but they still gave it their all. Good to see Atherton and the D secure the shutout.

Tough one tomorrow against a rested Beaver squad.

Should be a good one at "THE BERG" today

How are the Standings Calculated in NEHC is it the Standard 2 for a win and 1 for a Tie or is it 3 for a standard win 2 for OT win and 1 for a tie?
 
Looks to me like the team is really starting to come together and I expect (as always under Ellsworth) they’ll be playing their very best hockey when it matters most.

To be at the end of the semester without a loss, with twenty-freaking-three (!) new faces is REMARKABLE.

I firmly believe we have the best coach in the country right here in Northfield.
