Norwich 2015-16 - 17 straight ECAC East titles and counting....

Re: Norwich 2015-16 - 17 straight ECAC East titles and counting....

I don't view the regular season as an exhibition at all. I'm not sure my initial point about the regular season title being meaningless was properly articulated. As things are currently constructed, the regular season title is meaningless. Contrary to what I have inadvertently implied, I think the regular season should be all that matters. As I said in my previous post, let's eliminate the conference tourney altogether. Your "top seed" is your champion and they get the AQ. Nice and easy.

I'm predicting NU follows more of a Platty model than the Middlebury collapse; seasons of greatness bracketed by seasons of being very good.

Your point about recruiting being diluted, (my word) for lack of a better term, is accurate. That said, I would offer big time college football as an example. Nowhere is the "arms race" more prevalent nor obvious. Facilities, uniforms, etc are amazing across the board. However, Alabama has still won 4 national championships in 7 seasons. There is "something" that still makes them stand out. I think Norwich hockey has the same "something".

I don't really have a dog in this fight, but your brought up Plattsburgh ( or Plattsburg for some of you folks ) and them not doing the Middlebury collapse. Middlebury is a great academic and athletic school with long history. To say that they are "collapsing" is a tad unfair. Because of Middlebury, NESCAC schools and DIII in general have had to step up their game.

I will reference SUNY. Plattsburgh for years benifited from being one of the few SUNYAC schools to offer $$$ FA packages. They had a top notch athletic complex and everything that goes with it. The school, while not a NESCAC, isn't one of the worse schools but not the best either. Plattsburgh for many years dominated the SUNYAC. Fredonia had a couple year run with a great player (or 2), Potsdam had a year(s) but for the most part Plattsburgh was the team, you're right.

Having said that three things have happened:
1. Expansion of the pool - More teams have stepped up and started recruiting out of the same pool as your top teams have been for years cause them to look elsewhere for the diamond in the rough. More teams, more players needed, less players and or harder to get said players to your school.
2. Financial Aid - More teams and schools in general have went this route. Back in the mid 90's say 1/4 of the teams in DIII offered large FA packages to international students. Today that number seems to have grown. The SUNYAC has seen those numbers grow, and the teams have improved. Yes it's not all about the money, but it surely helps. It's also funny how teams that have recently struggled have lost their Aid as well. Coincidence?
3. Growth of US Junior programs - Years ago the OPJHL was more the king of DIII. The US based Junior leagues was almost mocked at. Now days you are getting quality players out of the US leagues just as much as Canadian leagues. So thus, the #2 is not as effective anymore when you get get more US born players to fill a team.

Just talking Plattsburgh again...
1. Expansion - Plattsburgh has lost players to other teams...teams that were not around 20 years ago. Fact.
2. Financial Aid - Plattsburgh had its FA dramatically reduced a few years back. It doesn't take rocket science to figure out what years those were and when it was raised back up. And along with #1, with other teams offering these packages, Plattsburgh has lost out on other kids as well.
3. US Junior teams - I will say American players in general here too - Over 50 % of Plattsburgh's returning roster is American. Unheard of 15 years ago when only 1/3 was American. With most coming from the Canadian Junior leagues.

I'm hoping it isn't the same "something" - an overemphasis and the ability to sidestep the concept that athletics is a support for the academic mission of a school, not the reason for being of the school. I hope that never happens at Norwich.

I agree. Top notch athletics AND top notch academics are part of what makes Norwich appealing. I am confident that won't change.

All valid points. Too much to reply to individually. I will say that perhaps "collapse" was too strong a word.

In the standards of Middlebury hockey "collapse" might not be that far off, but there are more factors that have cause this then a coach or time. I think it's more along the lines of Middlebury was brought back to earth. We won't get started on the $$$ nor into the "my academics are better than yours" snobbish NESCAC'ian attitude held by some, but like I said...Middlebury's downfall is the result of its own success. Because of them (and Norwich, and now SNC) teams are having to change the philosophy of their team make up. It happens. The Western big-man style of the 1990's, to Fredonia's trap, to Middlebury's torpedo, to RIT's high powered offense, to Oswego's DI transfer line, to the the defensive goaltending speed with size of SNC of today's world.

Norwich has a pretty rich tradition both on and off the ice. Again, like Middlebury, Norwich's success has caused other ECAC East teams to step it up, and they have. I think it will be a long time before we see another few seasons of undefeated conference play from any league like Plattsburgh had for a few years back. Too many good teams that can win any night.

One of the things that happened to the NEHC that changed the balance was the emergence of the UMB program. They were a laughingstock for years. I remember the year they had a 50 year old defenseman on the team along with his son. The old guy (okay, he was probably about my age) got a limited amount of ice time , but the fact that he dressed for every game tells you a lot about what they had to offer. Castleton changed the balance as well and seems to have made improvements in their academic programs, and the reality is that the only real weak links in the league now are Skidmore and St. Mike's. Before all the churn happened, there were Norwich, Babson, and that was about it in terms of real winning traditions.

In this regard, the same thing kind of happened to Midd (among other things), in the NESCAC. The rest of league caught up to them, and despite the advantage they had in facilities, they stumbled. It will be interesting to see if they come back. The drama with Beaney leading to his retirement was unfortunate, and he got some blame for things that might indicate he just lost touch with the age group. It was sad to see a great coaching career end on a sour note.

Re: Norwich 2015-16 - 17 straight ECAC East titles and counting....

I hesitate to call NU's recent season results a "decline". I think it's more of a return to equilibrium. Being a member of the Class of '13, I was there for the national championship team of '10 and the back-to-back-to-back-to-back Frozen Four appearances, but that sort of success isn't sustainable for anyone who is not UCONN women's basketball. Last year was the worst year that Norwich hockey has had in seven years and they were still 9 games above .500, nationally ranked for most of the year, and a force in the NEHC. To compare this with Middlebury, who hasn't had a winning season in 4 years, is a bit premature.

This doesn't mean that we should take the program's success for granted. Other teams have gotten a lot better and DIII hockey is the most competitive it's ever been, for reasons that have already been discussed. Overall, this is a positive development even if it makes things more difficult for the blue bloods. But, I'm with KRB in that I don't really understand the doom and gloom of some of the Norwich faithful and think the program has real reasons for optimism.

Nobody caught up to Middlebury, the lower academic entrance and financial aid went away for Canadian students. They caught up to the rest of their counterparts. They can no longer buy a team.

I predict that Skidmore will be vastly improved. Umass has greatly upped it's recruiting and operations since Belisle took over it has taken awhile and some growing pains but the addition of apartments on campus has really helped.

Might be a great call on Skidmore. Saw those guys out recruiting everywhere this year. I think they put in more time recruiting in one cycle than Sinclair did in his entire tenure. Which brings me to Middlebury. I'm not expecting big things anytime soon.

Re: Norwich 2015-16 - 17 straight ECAC East titles and counting....

Norwich also failed to beat Skidmore last year in a season for the first time ever. Skidmore played hard and I think their new coach has started to find something there. IMHO, an on-campus rink, Skidmore could do some real damage in five years.

Academically, it is a really good school, but they have always gone at hockey isn a half - a**ed manner

@d3hky: Also, longtime Norwich broadcaster George Commo is set to be inducted into the school's athletic hall of fame.

Prez with the NEHC D2 teams status in question how do you think the NEHC will look for 2017/2018? To leave the league with 8 teams would be attractive for NU allowing them to again schedule some games with NESCAC and New York teams.

With Castleton without a coach any chance Alex Todd with leave Trine U to come back to Castleton to help turn the program around. I would think it would be difficult to attract a new coach when school is about to start. Are assistant college coaches allowed to change jobs during the school year to take a head coaching job?

In my personal opinion (not speaking for Norwich or the men's hockey program), I would love to see the NEHC have eight teams going forward after this season. 16 league games leaves you nine non-league games to play with which as you say opens up opportunities to play more NESCAC, CCC, SUNYAC and ECAC West teams.

This is the final season in the league for Saint Michael's and Saint Anselm.

I can't speak for Castleton or their situation but I'd be shocked if he left the chance to start up a new program in the Midwest (where he is from) to come back to Castleton. But I could be completely wrong.

That would make it 14 league and 11 non-league games. :)
