Norwich 14-15

Its just that time of year with everyone playing up to their potential. Since NU's loss to UMB the last day of the season all of NU's playoff games have been just a tad too close. Even our Southern Maine 4-0 victory didn't get rolling until 7 plus minutes into the third period with our first score. And in the three games NU have won since then---all have been won by a single goal--and in two of them we spotted our opponent the lead before taking over--and even still the Babson game went to OT. Agree with The Peach--how about a nice shut out--supported by three or four 1st period NU goals? Short of that--I will just settle for getting by Amherst with a 1 goal victory.:)

Another thought: Last night someone remarked or wrote that a NU player may have been seriously injured blocking a shot in the closing moments. Anything further to report?

Piacentini is okay after blocking the shot. What a play to lay in front of a slap shot by Sarig. That takes some serious cahonnes.

I wasn't able to watch the game last night, and didn't think I'd be missing much, but, win and advance. I think Plymouth knew that it had to be a chippy game if they wanted to stand a chance. I can't fault them for that. If you're playing a faster, stronger, and better team then hit them in the mouth and see if you can disrupt their focus.

Exactly. Norwich was, IMO, clearly better and carried play most of the night. It very easily could've been the rout we all expected, but Plymouth's chippiness did get into the boy's heads a bit. Kudos to the Panthers for having a plan. Hopefully, the Cadets learned a lesson.

Glad he is ok. While it does indeed take major cojones, Plymouth managed to summon those same cojones 25 times. Glad Tyler blocked the one we needed.

Facing Sarig's shot from the distance he was away ... maybe 15 or 20 feet ... Piacentini was like a gunfighter staring down his adversary in the old west. He also made a bold statement ... "I'm going to do whatever it takes to get this win!" Love that attitude heading to Amherst where goals are going to be at a premium.

Hopefully that play is indicative of how hungry they are....

Appreciate how quickly Prezde responded to my email last night about how the NSN broadcast sort of fell apart....at least for those of us offshore. Sadly missed most of the last two periods (so thank God for WDEV). Any chance Cadet Color Guy can string together a highlight video and posted it? And besides the scoring hightlights how about showing Piacentini courageously facing down Sarig’s 15 foot zinger in the closing moments? Delighted to hear he came away without any serious injury.

Love his "I'm going to do whatever it takes to get this win!" attitude. The spirit of the Corp is alive and well. And while I am sure Puck Voice is accurate in what will surely be a low scoring Amherst game—still like my idea (for the sake of us older guys with weak hearts), e.g. a 1st period ending with a four goal NU lead that ends in another Ty Richenbach shut out. But I will settle for that 1 goal win.

PS: A question on one of the finer points of the game: Noted that PSU took ten penalties last night—for a total of 36 minutes. As I have said in earlier posts (usually about UMBoston) I keep thinking that discipline is such a big part of any game plan. At what point does a coach tell their team that the rough stuff isn't working. It just seems to me that 36 minutes of “standing in the corner” means is that for over half the game PSU was willing to play the #1 team in the US down a man. Someone tell me there some strategic logic to that.

I think it was working, though. They may not have gotten the win, but they did come within 1 of the #1 team in the country. For being as outgunned as they were, that's a pretty good result.

I understand the logic I guess. As I recall, within the ECAC-E New England College had a chippy rap...then it was UMass Boston up to and including this season (according to the ECAC stats).

But this year the final ECAC-E Champ Title game was played by the two least penalized teams: NU and Babson. And now going into the NCAA finals-- of the remaining 8 teams Adrian is the 5th most penalized team in DIII...meanwhile the other seven clubs are way down the list...starting with Plattsburgh (47th). I just don't see how you win games sitting in the box. And clearly, while PSU lost by a goal...they gave up a goal on a penalty...and up a man with less than 2 minutes to go...they negated their advantage with their 10th penalty of the game. I just think that teams may win a near term battle being chippy...but run the risk of losing the war. That is the snake that I believe that bit PSU last night. And it will be interesting how much of their tough stuff Adrian brings to the party going forward.

Does anyone know if the Blue Line Club has thought of a fan bus (or buses?) for Amherst? Seems like the perfect trip to do it ... anyone out there who would use it?

I understand where you're coming from and agree with you, especially when the teams are more evenly matched. However, in a game like Norwich-Plymouth State where Norwich is by far a more talented team, Plymouth State has to try to win the mental game in order to have a chance on the scoreboard. Like I said, I didn't watch it, but from all reports they were able to accomplish that and give themselves a chance.

Please understand, we are on the same page--I am just not sure it works---having seen NEC, UMB and others try it. But I understand a tactic that when one team "floats like butterflies....but stings like bees"---best try a fly swatter on them and hope you don't get caught. And since PSU only got off 4 SOG in each of the last two periods (8 total) it sounds like they got caught somewhere between the penalty box, a NU rope a dope but were able to hold the boys to a single goal as the margin of victory.

Going forward it appears from the stats that Amherst is strong defensively but matched by aggressive (but disciplined) offense. Likely to have fewer penalties--I imagine and should be a good game.

Based on previous experiences at Amherst games, if the Blue Line Club sends just one bus, Norwich will have twice as many fans as Amherst.

The NESCACs don't like the rough stuff anyway...they might stain their tennis whites ;)

Remember back in the days of the interlock Amherst was a middle of the road NESCAC club ... now they are a power ... bet they have a few more fans than they used to ...

Same with Trinity. My recollection...the power was Middlebury...followed by Bowdoin...although most recently NU faced tougher Polar Brae clubs. We never seem able to sweep Colby and Bowdoin on those Maine visits in the waning days of the Interlock. New power bases in the NESCAC.

Re: Norwich 14-15

I can remember when Trinity was pretty good in the interlock, and played in a community rink that would shut down after the end of the season and was converted to tennis. One of the worst rinks I ever saw, but their some of their teams were darn good.
