Norwich 14-15

Re: Norwich 14-15

Even with the loss, UMB got some much needed momentum in that third period. If they would have quit and seceded a blowout loss last night then their confidence would be shot and their season in jeopardy. They have to feel like they began to get things back on track in that third where they outscored us 3-1 (excluding the EN).

As Cory said multiple times last night, the game was kind of similar to the Cadets game at Plattsburgh, where this time the Beacons made a few errors that the Cadets were able to capitalize on seemingly every time. I still feel like the Cadets need to tighten things up in the defensive zone, because as was also stated on the broadcast, at times the Cadets seem lackadazical and neglect their responsibilities on defense. In a game tonight where they're going up against one of the best goalies in the country, I don't predict there being a 4-goal cushion.

As an aside, I just want to give my thanks to PuckVoice and Cory and everyone that contributes to the broadcast. I love flipping through the games on Friday nights and seeing the different broadcasts/teams/rinks and Norwich by far has one of the best broadcasts in DIII, in terms of play-by-play, analysis, and picture quality. We all knew that already, but since I finally got the wire to connect my Mac to my TV, I finally got the full effect last night.

Totally agree. Why did it take you so long to get a firewire? When NU plays at places that use NSN (such as the unfortunate event in the Plattsburgh mini-rink), I am usually very successful with synching the DEV audio with the NSN video. Other places I sometimes just mute the audio if I can't synch successfully.

Today's game is a big one.

A man's rink should not be judged by size alone !

Eh, I couldn't justify the $40 investment as I didn't mind watching games on my computer and didn't really realize what I was missing. However, my binge-watching of Breaking Bad convinced me to make the purchase, and now I couldn't be happier.

Re: Norwich 14-15

Happy that we had the chance to practice the EA against the Birds on Tuesday. It paid big dividends today. Of course, we'll have to play the Beavers twice more this year, hopefully only once at their rink.

Re: Norwich 14-15

To Jamie Murray of Babson. Hats off to a superb game by handling what has to exceed 40 SOG. Maybe the best goal tending many NU fans have seen since the Cadets had to deal with B.J.O’Brien of St. Norbert’s, when he cut down all but 2 out of 70 Cadet shots through 99 minutes of hockey….in the NU win for the 2010 NCAA title. Murray has the same chemistry,e.g guts, brains, skill—the whole package.

As for the NU Cadets! Wow! Hats off for never giving up. This team is the real deal and absolutely relentless.

The only bad news is, the Cadets have to play these Beavers again but not before they trade blows twice with UMass Boston. The net/net for now is that this weekend, the Cadets owned the store. :)

Note by the way that UMB had to come from behind to take St.Mikes into OT to get their win.

Re: Norwich 14-15

Great gritty win. Looked like Babson couldn't restart the offense after working to try to hold the one goal lead through the third. Never give up - I almost did, but the Cadets pulled it out.

Re: Norwich 14-15

At the end of the game last night there was a question about whether the winning goal was deflected off of Will Pelletier helmeted head.

And I saw Jamie Murray approach the referees contesting this goal after buzzer. And with all due respect to that great goalie—I find it tough to believe that with all that was going on in and near his goalie's crease that he could possible have been sure how that goal got by him.

So the question is, can a goal be scored with “a header.” :confused:I asked a friend, who had once been an NCAA official and he said directing a goal off the head is not legal. :o

That left me wondering if the rules make a distinction between “directing” the puck not unlike like a header in soccer versus an innocent shot deflected unintentionally off a helmet that happens to score a goal.

I tried to see what I could find on the internet but all I uncovered is I believe from NHL, e.g. Rule 78.4, Scoring a Goal, states:

If an attacking player has the puck deflect into the net, off his skate or body, in any manner, the goal shall be allowed. The player who deflected the puck shall be credited with the goal.

However, Rule 78.4, d, states:

Apparent goals shall be disallowed by the Referee and the appropriate announcement made by the Public Address Announcer for the following reasons: (i) When the puck has been directed, batted or thrown into the net by an attacking player other than with a stick.

It seems to me that if a player were to make a distinctive motion with their head directing the puck into the net, the goal would be disallowed. However, if the puck deflects off the player's head, and there is no distinctive motion, it's a good goal.

Does this whole true for college hockey as well? Seems to be a real judgement call by the ref if it is. :confused:

Re: Norwich 14-15

It looked to me like Pelletier made a distinctive motion with his head to direct the puck into the net. It also looked like Murray was following the puck down and saw Pelletier head it in. So perhaps he had a point. But hey, Norwich caught a break and I'll take it.

Many Thanks. I asked the NU sport info folks to post those last two goals to give folks a second look. But I still wonder if under any circumstances...by that I mean an unintentional "header" if the goal would be allowed in the NCAA...as it appears to be allowed in the NHL.

My student assistant is a referee and he said it was a perfectly good goal even with the intent to head it in. The only thing it can't go in off of is hand and or kicking motion with skate according to him.

When is a goal not allowed?

c. A goal shall not be allowed in any of the following cases:
1. If an attacking player strikes the puck with a stick when the puck is
above the height of the crossbar of the goal frame (4 feet [1.22m]);
2. If the puck has been thrown or batted into the goal;
3. If the attacking team has committed a foul that assisted in the making
of a goal;
4. If the attacking team had too many players on the ice at the time the
goal was scored;
5. If the goal was contributed to by a nonplayer;
6. If the puck hits an official and goes directly into the net (see 6-43);
7. If any member of the attacking team (other than the player in
possession of the puck) was in or skating through the goal crease
when the goal was scored from outside the crease, unless:
i. The goalkeeper was outside the crease when the puck entered the
net; or
ii. An attacking player was in the crease but, in the opinion of the
official, did not prevent the goalkeeper from defending the goal.
8. If the puck entered the net by an attacking player carrying the puck
into the cage upon any part of the body, or kicking the puck into the
cage;
9. If the puck entered the net after an on-ice official (by blowing the
whistle) or timekeeper has signaled play to stop;
10. If an attacking player propels the puck illegally with the stick, and it
deflects off any player into the net;
11. If a linesman reports to a referee any conduct calling for a time
penalty and the referee concurs with the report, any goal scored by
the offending team after the infraction shall not be allowed;
12. If the goal cage has been moved or dislodged. The goal frame is
considered to be displaced if any portion of the goal frame is not in
its proper position (e.g., Frame must be completely flat on the ice
surface, goal posts must be in proper place and affixed securely in
place with its pegs.).
13. If the puck is between the goalkeeper’s pads or lodged in the
equipment and is carried over the goal line by an opponent propelling
the goalkeeper into the cage; and
14. If the puck enters the defending team’s goal during a delayed offside,
the goal is disallowed. The faceoff will be in the neutral zone at the
faceoff spot nearest the attacking zone of the offending team, if the
puck was “carried” offside. The faceoff shall be at spot in the zone
of the origin of the pass, if passed offside.
d. A goal shall be credited in the scoring records to a player who propels
the puck into the opponents’ goal. If a goal is scored by a defensive
player, credit shall go to the last offensive player to have touched the
puck. Each goal shall count one point in the player’s record.
When a player scores a goal, an assist shall be credited to the player or
players taking part in the play preceding the goal, even though the play may
originate in the defensive zone; but not more than two assists can be given HR-70 RULE 6 / PLAYING RULES
on any goal. Each assist so credited shall count one point in the player’s
record.
For statistical purposes, a save for a goalkeeper shall be credited
only when the goalkeeper has prevented the puck from entering the net,
regardless of which team shot the puck.

Re: Norwich 14-15

I wonder, this week''s games are considered road games, but will the team be returning to campus after the St. Mike's game? Would save a lot of $$ on lodgings.

Re: Norwich 14-15

Given the fact that there were times that the baseball team returned to campus for a night between two doubleheaders in Massachusetts, they sure as hell better return to campus.

Williams will use hotels for the Trinity/Wesleyan, Tufts/Conn College, and Colby/Bowdoin weekends. They come home in between games of the Amherst/Hamilton weekend and the home and home with Middlebury.

Salem State does not need hotels for MASCAC play.

The team will be returning. Two 7pm game absolutely no reason to stay overnight when first game is 50 minutes up the road and then you don't play until 7pm the next night.
