Norwich 14-15

Re: Norwich 14-15

Interesting....2 NESCAC & 1 ECAC-W. Why not another SUNYAC or ECAC-NE? I like it when you have four different conferences represented.

Lot that goes into trying to get teams to come. It's quite a task to try and line these up every year and in a perfect world yes it would have three different conferences represented.

There was also a late change with one of the teams. Wesleyan was a late addition replacing another team that backed out.

Look at it this way, Norwich could end up playing four NESCAC schools next year. It will almost be like the days of the Interlock. :)

Conn. College in PrimeLink, Middlebury (possible PrimeLink and non-conference), Wesleyan and/or Trinity!

Re: Norwich 14-15

Do we know the dates for next year yet?
New Years weekend is Friday the 1st, Saturday the 2nd, Sunday the 3rd ... Would they play on New Years Day evening or go with a Saturday/Sunday format? Maybe Saturday and Sunday afternoons? Saturday night/Sunday afternoon?

It will be a Saturday/Sunday Jan. 2 and 3rd. I would imagine 4 and 7 Saturday, 1 and 4 Sunday but I don't know that as fact yet. The dates are correct though.

A few of the ECAC Northeast have had good results outside there conference. A team like Becker or Curry would make a fine addition. But of the teams out there that I would like to see come are Utica, Geneso, Amherst, Elmira, Hobart and Williams.

Why don't you call them and promise a steak if they come

I think everyone is on pins and needles to see if the game count gets reduced from 25 to a lower number by the D-III presidents.

What doesn't make any sense to me is that its up to each individual school to schedule the amount of games they want to play. If a school doesn't want to play 25 games, they don't have to.

Re: Norwich 14-15

Big game across the lake today.

Arguably Norwich's toughest game of the season to date. The Cadets have traditionally struggled on the small ice surface at the Stafford.

Plattsburgh is so good in its own rink because they play all five guys below the circles in both zones and its effective because most teams aren't used to seeing that and have a hard time making adjustments to it initially.

As always, penalties and goaltending will be key in this one. I'll say its a one goal game either way of the 3-2 or 4-3 variety.

Re: Norwich 14-15

Well I'm excited for tonight, as I imagine we all are. Unfortunately I wasn't able to watch any of the Colby game and only a very little of the Buffalo State game. The Colby game was surprisingly tight, as just looking at the box score we didn't dominate the shots on goal category like we usually do against inferior teams. But after watching Colby play Bowdoin tight early in two games this year, I wasn't as surprised in hindsight. Colby seems to show a lot of grit but just doesn't seem to have the horses to compete for three periods against top competition.

As discussed prior to the weekend, it's encouraging to see Pelletier and Niezgoda continue their momentum into the second half. It will be interesting to see if they can maintain it over the next three games against three of the top teams in the country. I hit on it before, but I'm curious to see how the possible emergence of a go-to or elite scorer will affect the Norwich offense. I think we can all agree that a balanced offense with numerous players able to put the puck in the back of the net is difficult for an opponent to prepare for, but on the other side, having that leader and scorer who is able to elevate his game in a time of adversity could also be vital down the stretch. It can also create more opportunities for scoring on occasion. For example, my Blues have suffered from the lack of a pure goal scorer for years, and in dry spells it seemed like everyone was waiting for someone else to step up. Now we have Tarasenko, and as he has emerged as one of the top pure scorers in the league I have seen numerous scoring opportunities created when defenses collapse on him expecting him to shoot, which creates a clear passing lane to set up a scoring chance for a teammate.

I say all of this as an amateur hockey fan who has only been ice skating twice in my life: once when I was five years old and once when I was 22 and drunk in New York City.

Your observations based on Colby from the boxscore are pretty spot on. Norwich didn't exactly play its best game but I think a lot of credit needs to be handed to Colby for completely throwing us off our game by bottling up and stifling our breakout. I haven't seen a team stop Norwich's breakout that effectively since St. Norbert.

Colby is a young team that if they can keep the kids together and bring in a few more horses I definitely think they could be a top NESCAC team in the coming years.

Re: Norwich 14-15

Tough week coming off the NSB. I expect Platty will give the boys a thump tonight, after the beating we gave them at Middlebury. Hopefully the boys can rebound and handle UMB/Babs this weekend. As much as I would love a 30-0-1 season, a couple beat-downs to good teams are usually good for their focus and determination.

Re: Norwich 14-15

Cards got caught in a buzzsaw when we last met. Hopefully, we can play a better game. Perhaps Norwich played their best game of the year that day?? Our goaltending has been solid except for that game. Very similar teams: No stars, balanced scoring up and down the roster, very strong on the back end. That leaves penalties and goaltending the deciding factor in this one. However, it won't be decided as this one ends up 2-2.

Re: Norwich 14-15

A humbling experience last night, which may prove to be a blessing in disguise moving forward. We gave Plattsburgh our best shot during the Primelink and then we took theirs last night. On the bright side, McShane has plenty to focus on during practice leading up to the showdowns with UMB and Babson this weekend, primarily defensively. Our offense had plenty of chances, we just couldn't put it in the back of the net. Hats of to Finney. However, we had numerous breakdowns in the defensive zone that allowed Plattsburgh to move the puck way too freely and get clean shots off right in front of the net. This proved to be the difference, as I thought the game was rather fairly contested. Norwich even dominated for some stretches. However, the Cardinals managed to take advantage of their opportunities.
