Re: Northern Michigan University Wildcats 2016-17 Season Thread: Gotta Get Up And Try
I'm not saying we hire Donato. I'm saying we should consider hiring someone like Oystrick and hope that they become our version of Donato. One of the big problems facing NMU right now is that they don't have many alumni with coaching experience. Oystrick and Axtell are both ECHL assistants, Rich is at LSSU, and Contois I think is still coaching USHL. My worry about hiring someone young with no university connection is that if they do find success, they would have no incentive to stay beyond monetary compensation. Also: We pay our assistants crap (for every sport) - no coach at NMU will be able to retain quality assistants on the current budget
Pecknold was hired as Head Coach when Quinnipiac was D-1, then remained with the program as it transitioned to D1. Carvel: NHL assistant, that above the minimum of time as D-1 assustand. You're right on Donato. But call him up and see if he'd be interested. I am telling what NMU HR would likely put there if the job were to be posted. Very similar to the postings for the other sports.
There's a couple other qualifications: they would have to be ready to come here under the current financial and budgetary conditions. And be able to bring in and retain top notch assistants as well.
