Northern Michigan University Wildcats 2016-17 Season Thread: Gotta Get Up And Try

Re: Northern Michigan University Wildcats 2016-17 Season Thread: Gotta Get Up And Try

Michelutti coaches Midget AAA, where players move UP to junior. Zaniboni is at Tier III Marquette Royales level pay to play hockey and hasn't been able to move up to Tier II junior like the NAHL.Shyiak has proved himself as a WCHA head coach. Hope MOJO isn't on your search committee. As for Garrow, would he shut down his business and take a pay cut? He's more likely to be on the search committee that interviewing with it.

Hey, you have to start somewhere...shoot some names out there genius! These fellas have experienced success and have shown the ability to lead/with successful results, played D1, and while Shyiak's first run as coach may have flamed out...have you ever heard of a coach names Bellechik who used to coach the Cleveland Browns? Look how that turned out after given a second chance.

Re: Northern Michigan University Wildcats 2016-17 Season Thread: Gotta Get Up And Try

If you want a "Tech change" you'll need to be prepared for a $450,000 yearly commitment between the head coach's compensation package and necessary assistant coaches.

That's pretty accurate. Here's Tech's breakdown:

Pearson $290,000/yr
Shuchuk $74,500/yr
Shawhan $70,000/yr
Shelast $40,000/yr (strength coach)
TOTAL $474,500

In contrast here's the breakdown for Alabama-Huntsville, considered to be "bare bones" by many:

Corbett $103,000/yr
Morgan $46,325/yr
Thomas $43,237/yr
Shimizu $13,796/yr (strength coach)
TOTAL $206,358

BGSUHockey.com has a good list breakdown for head coach salaries for last season in the WCHA.

Re: Northern Michigan University Wildcats 2016-17 Season Thread: Gotta Get Up And Try

Also, are these the same people who whined that NMU was leaving Lakeview back in 1997? The same people who whined that the seats at the Berry were terrible? (And were fixed in 2001) The same ones who whined that the sight lines were worse than Lakeview? (I've watched games in Lakeview, it's terrible) More of the same people who bemoaned the lack of alcohol sales? (That NMU finally offered a few years ago after acquiring an additional liquor license and liability) Are these the same people who said the lack of attendance was due to 7pm start times, families from Ishpeming, Negaunee, and Gwinn couldn't make puck drop? (Which NMU accommodated by making start times 730) The same people who then realized 730 starts were terrible because kids weren't home from games until after 10pm? (Again, NMU changed to accommodate) Are these people the same ones who continually find ways to excuse themselves from supporting the program just because the calendar doesn't say it's 1991?

For being Hockeyville, USA; MQT sounds more like the Blackhawks fanbase: bandwagoners for the NHL and that's it.

That sure isn't the boastful Redmen/Electrician/Wildcat Pride I remember from 2000 to 2005. (But the same whiners are still there complaining how the Berry is inferior to their Lakeview, which never held a candle to their precious Palestra)

BOY you hit that one on the head. Not really a hockeytown unless there is something to really galvanize things. ie the Hockeyville contest for example. Never saw so many unknown faces at the Lakeview.

Lakeview itself had better memories of winning and it was also a very tight barn, very loud, the donors room was more like family/friends together at the bar. It wasn't about the beer itself it was just the atmosphere. That is what people remember and enjoy. It was different NOT saying it was better. Don't ask me how Comley got players when they looked at that barn compared to most others.

If we are staying with alumni during a search, I believe a long shot yet worthwhile candidate could be Peter Michelutti Jr. He's had success in Ontario as a junior coach and could open up new recruiting grounds in that area. He played both forward and defense at NMU and was highly respected.

Others could be Bill Zaniboni for consideration as either head coach or an assistant, or even Doug Garrow once again in either capacity.

Rob Facca, Dave Shyiak, and yes, even Nathan Oystrik should be given consideration.

Lastly, I have to state once again, nothing changes in the mind of the community and long time supporters if Kyle stays. The dominant consensus and opinion seems to be that it is needed for the program to rebound, both in the W/L column, support within the community, attendance, and perception. I for one cannot escape these discussions everywhere I go in the community.

Great to see Michelutti's dad Peter Sr. when we were in Florida! Peter has done very well at the Midget AAA level and has moved many players up to juniors.

Aparch, you don't live in the same reality as those in this community. It's easy to take scripted direction and be a keyboard warrior defending the coaching staff all the while taking swipes at the fans in Marquette. That isn't going to change things. While Marquette may be Hockeyville, token appearances and support of the Marquette Junior Hockey Association by NMU's coaches and players has fed the disconnect and discontent and it shows...just ask any of the past players who currently reside in Marquette where they stand.

So let me see if I have this right, it's OK to stick a knife in your coach's back, but how dare anyone criticize the suggestion that someone who's never coached above the Midget level should be considered. Or a coach who hasn't accomplished enough to make it out of Tier III. Or a coach who failed to win 10 games in 6 of 8 seasons, one who's record is infinitely worse than the coach he would replace? Next Belichik. The L'Anse Vegas oddsmakers say he'd be closer to Frank Anzalone 2.0 than Bill Belichik 2.0.

Former NMU Head Hockey Coach Rick Comley is in charge of Player Recruitment for the NHL Chicago Blackhawks and Comley’s son, Rick Jr., is the assistant GM and scout for the Omaha Lancers in the USHL.

There aren't any knives sticking out of anybody's back around here. Walt Kyle has lost the community and it is't as if they turned on him. This has grown slowly over a period of years and is at its height presently. It's not as if he is a spring chicken and would most likely ride out his retirement as a NHL scout somewhere.

NMU needs a youthful infusion much the same Miami University did with Enrico Blasi well over a decade ago. Who could that be with ties to NMU? I've thrown out a couple of names from within, how about others with the MUCH desired NCAA experience...if that is a necessary qualification...

As long as you realize that the pool of candidates you get won't be the "A" list. Would a Chris Bergeron, Mel Pearson or Mike Hastings type be willing to step in? Would Billy Muckalt or Pat Mikesch want to make the jump from the USHL? Not likely. It wouldn't be shocking to see names like Corbett, Metro and Shawhan in the mix. Alums will clamor for Shyiak. Other candidates would come out of that Damon Whitten type. Hey, he's almost got us back to where we were when we started yelling, "Fire Roque," who is available too and might apply.

When the LSSU job was open, I spoke with a few top USHL coaches & top NCAA assistants about it. Responses ranged from, "not a chance," to "only if they boost recruiting to $X and assistants to $Y." I would also note that even with improved support, it took both Bergeron & Pearson 4 years until their teams got over .500.

Let me assure you Karr has discussed going all in. Doesn't mean there is the money for it.

I love NMU Hockey and I hate to be so gloom and doom. Sorry, but this program is headed for the tank. The beginning of the end came with conference realignment. You can keep going awhile longer paying coaches 1/2 to a 1/4 of what good programs pay, but the product will continue to be what we have now. There is no money in this conference to keep things going, especially the bottom 1/2. I hope I am wrong, but it's only a matter of time.

NMU (7-17-4) @ Bowling Green (14-15-2) this weekend.... Any thoughts on this series????

Best hope is a split. Scoring came on but look against who. BG started slow, been up and down, their play has improved.

Yeah, they've been up and down, but they also know that they just have four games left while others have eight. There may be some desperation to the Falcons, who don't have to deal with a travel roster and can throw it all out there with just one game over the next two weekends.

Agree that's why I was saying BEST HOPE and also agree BG is desperate.

Rich Metro name has been linked from here for that job at NMU.
