Northern Michigan University Wildcats 2016-17 Season Thread: Gotta Get Up And Try

For the first time in a long time I felt a sense of excitement from the crowd in the Berry Events Center tonight. They roared after the sequence of saves Tolvanen (and Yaremko laying in the crease to prevent a goal) made with a few minutes to go in the third. Plus the cheers once the final buzzer went off. Great game. This team is rolling!

Great to hear that. It's looking like there could be a lot on the line for the MTU series in 2 weekends. I think I will make the trip for that one to make it 3 years in the row for me. Go Cats! Go!

Tech is now officially eliminated from the race for first place. They can lock up 2nd with any total of 4 pts gained by them or lost by Minnesota St.

Another great win for NMU tonite beating Alaska-Fairbanks (3-0) in Marquette as NMU Soph Goalie Atte Tolvanen gets his 4th straight shutout in Net.... NMU & Tolvanen have now pitched (4) straight shutout wins in a row.... That's off the charts.... NMU needs to take (1) game at a time from here on out....

NMU REMAINING SCHEDULE
UAF @ NMU - Feb 11th
NMU @ Mankato - Feb. 17th
NMU @ Mankato - Feb. 18th
MTU @ NMU - Feb. 24th
NMU @ MTU - Feb. 25th

WCHA PLAYOFFS?????

Tolvanen is tied for second all time in the NCAA for consecutive games shutout. And his consecutive SO minutes is now third all time.

Better than Brian Elliott, Ben Scrivens, Cory Schneider, Ryan Miller,
Mark Dekanich, Billy Sauer, Thatcher Demko,
Jordan Pearce, and others.

What makes it even more impressive is that teams are throwing 40+ shots at him every night. He looked very solid again tonight. Lots of good saves. UAF definitely had their chances on him.

His D did a great job at clearing people out and giving him a good look at the first shot and clearing rebounds.

Ironic that an NMU sweep next weekend would make the last series against Tech academic in the standings for the Huskies. I'm convinced that in that scenario the Wildcats would sweep and enter the playoffs on the biggest roll possible.

So consider the following possible results:

NMU over Alaska tonight
Tech over Ferris
UAA over LSSU

Next weekend

NMU sweeps MnSt
UAA splits with Ferris
LSSU splits with Alaska

That would make the standings look like this entering the final weekend:

3.MnSt 41
4.BGSU 38
5.NMU 37
6.FSU 35
7.UAF 33
8.LSSU 32

That's well within striking distance of home ice. What a comeback that would be!

There are only 3 guarentees in life: death, taxes & Walt Kyle second-half comebacks.

Whelp... Guess this is something special in an otherwise dreadful season... Let's see where this goes...

Re: Northern Michigan University Wildcats 2016-17 Season Thread: Gotta Get Up And Try

Congrats Cats! Great goal-keeping and over-all turnaround. Since you are playing so well, I didn't want to see you in the first round in Bemidji, and looks like you are going from out of the play-offs to a decent seed.

Re: Northern Michigan University Wildcats 2016-17 Season Thread: Gotta Get Up And Try

What a phenomenal run by Atte these last 5 games. I know he tied the NCAA record for consecutive shutouts tonight, but does anyone know what the record is for consecutive shutout minutes? All in all, another solid end to the Season by the Cats. Maybe we can find a way to hire a coach to run the team October, November and December, and then let Walt jump in for the final stretch. I'm just hoping we can hold on and at least make the playoffs /s

Re: Northern Michigan University Wildcats 2016-17 Season Thread: Gotta Get Up And Try

Another great win by NMU tonite (2-0) over UAF at home and the 5th Shutout in a row for the team & Tolvanen which is quite amazing.... Haven't seen a NMU team play this well defensively in a long time.... When was the last time a NMU Goalie had a record-setting run like this???? Only one other Goalie in the history of NCAA D1 Hockey ever had (5) shutouts in a row so we are watching history unfold with Tolvanen's amazing current Shutout streak of (5) in a row....

I was streaming the Badger/PSU game on the Wisconsin Channel, and they said that he broke the record for consecutive scoreless minutes. They didn't say who held the record before or give the # of minutes though, so not sure how reliable they are

Blaine Lacher, Lake Superior St. March 4-14, 1994 - 5 consecutive games SO

The overall NCAA D1 record (Men's and Women's) is:
Ann-Renee Desbiens, Wisconsin, 2016 - 8 consecutive games SO

Ann-Renee Desbiens, Wisconsin, 2016 - 543:53

Re: Northern Michigan University Wildcats 2016-17 Season Thread: Gotta Get Up And Try

NMU (11-17-4) @ Mankato (16-10-4) will not be a picnic and a walk in the park as they are a very good hockey team this year with lots of scorers.... NMU will have their hands full next weekend in Mankato....

it helps when you get your captain back, add another solid forward to the lineup, get healthy, your freshman and sophomore D get experience under their belts and your keeper goes from an .897 save % to .990 over the past 8. There really has been minimal change procedurally or strategically. It's simply a deeper, more experienced lineup and a hot goalie.

Well, this has definitely been quite the turnaround but these last four games will be by far the toughest test yet. Two wins in Mankato would be HUGE going into the final weekend. MTU has gotten the best of the 'Cats the last few years and certainly haven't had much success in Houghton lately. Let's see if this team is up for the challenge. The playoff push is alive and very well.
