Northern Michigan University Wildcats 2016-17 Season Thread: Gotta Get Up And Try

Re: Northern Michigan University Wildcats 2016-17 Season Thread: Gotta Get Up And Try

As far as the Cappo Cup is concerned is tonight's game considered a tie like the NCAA or does LSSU take a 2-1 lead in the series?

I'm 99 percent certain it's considered a tie so the series is 1-1-1 with NMU owning the tiebreaker for having one more goal in the three games so far. So pretty much tomorrow's winner wins the Cappo Cup. If there's a tie tomorrow, then NMU wins the Cappo Cup.

Congratulation on winning the Cappo Cup back NMU fans. A couple questions:

-If NMU would of won by just one goal last Saturday, the series would of been tied 1-1-2 with the total goals even as well. What happens when this occurs? Would NMU and LSSU be crowned co-champions or would there be a separate shootout to decide the Cappo Cup?

-Do LSSU and NMU play four times again next year? If they do, is it two conference, two non-conference games like it was last season or is it all league games?

If it was tied in total goals, then the series would have been a tie and LSSU would have retained the Cup. The teams play twice in conference play at NMU next year and a home & home non-conference series. Every other year, the teams meet four times in WCHA play. In the other years, twice. They have added the non-conference home & home in those years.

Okay, thanks for the information.

Heard a rumor that freshman forward Collin Peters is no longer on the team. Can anyone confirm that? Heard he might be going back to juniors. He wasn't in the lineup this weekend.

He's still on your roster. Sounds like he had a decent year in the USHL, but he's a -9 on the ice for you guys. UAA had 2 players leave at the Christmas break. Hard when that happens half way through the season and coaches have no way to replace them. Hopefully it was just a rumor.

True. He left the team.

The news report is a bit long, but worth viewing. I have heard fans and boosters complaining for about 10 years, so attitudes seem to pre-date Mr. Karr.

Thoughts?
- First. Their math on the first graphic is terrible for hockey. A 64-91-23 record since 2012(-2013 season) is a .424 win percentage. Not 35.9%.
- Second. Their math on the second graphic continues to be terrible for hockey. A 91-83-28 record from 2007(-2008 season) to 2011(-2012 season) is .520. Not 45%
- Third. Their audio and mixing sucks terribly.
- Four. Wow. What a crock from Forrest. There are people out there that want to donate to specific sports, but are told that their donation goes to *all* sports. There is no way to donate money to a sport directly.
- Five. The lack of acknowledgement from the University for alumni/sponsor/etc. donations doesn't surprise me. That wasn't happening as far back as 2000 even under Ken Godfrey (RIP).
- Six. Lack of outreach. D*mn right. Burdick and Anderson aren't wrong.
- Seven. Forrest is running short on community goodwill. Between his railroading of Walt two seasons ago to cover his potential mistakes, his lack of visibility other than the occasional television interview from an empty ice arena (this piece, his TV6 interviews last year), etc. is starting to wear thin.
- Seven. On the other hand, this isn't 100% Forrest's fault. Or Walt. Or the teams directly. There seems to have been ideas floated that made it as far as the AD's office going back now 17 years that hasn't changed. What happened once they got to that office, who knows. Either they were passed along and shot down by the board of controllers, or just flat out lost in the AD's office.
- Nine. This was a much needed piece, but the way they went about it was ham handed and lost focus. I appreciate the effort, but the TMZ-esque production needs a lot of polish.

tl:dr; UP Local CBS sucks at math and beyond that I'm just unsure where this piece was headed. Started as a discussion of record and coaching changes, becomes a complaint about the budget, then swings to lack of recognition from the University. I will say: Burdick and Anderson aren't wrong.

*edit* Also, for those interested, here's a handy spreadsheet and graphic with the team record versus attendance combined. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1siSW5r0G0WIipHQ9GKEKHPygvpYKNzMY31Jn_Riu13Q/edit?usp=sharing

Great spreadsheet!

I agree that this disconnect predates Forrest. Despite his positive contributions (adding men's soccer, swimming and women's lacrosse, golf) he needs to improve his community outreach. He (they?) have been lacking greatly in that department.

On the math, they've included ties in their calculations of winning %. It's either a convenient way of making things look worse than they are or just plain stupidity. I've seen that happen before. By that token, theoretically you could have a hockey regular season with 18 wins and 18 ties, be undefeated, but by their calculations you only have a winning % of 50.

Yep. I'm pretty sure it was a mistake on their staff's part. Apparently calculating winning percentage is hard.

Great spreadsheet!

Thanks. I took the attendance numbers from USCHO's stats, but they only go back to the 2001 season. I need to spend some time scouring box scores for earlier data and haven't had the time.

It's interesting seeing the attendance continue to drop recently, even with three consecutive upswing years. And how there are years where attendance seems unrelated to performance.
