Northeastern Huskies 2023-24: Brave New World or New Beginning?

Not just imperfect but inconsistent and unpredictable. Offense was fine but once again stymied by an otherwise meh goalie who stood on his head and turned somersaults. Defense and goaltending left much to be desired. Allowing that team to notch four goals is inexcusable, IMHO.

To paraphrase Henry Wadsworth Longfellow: When they are good, they are very, very good; but when they are bad...

Very, very good in the third period; not so much in the first two. Whitehead might have stolen this one.

Well that's the season in a nut shell. They also lost like 4 or 5 one goal games. They win 2 or 3 of those and they would be battling for 3rd or 4th place. That said, I don't think they can make the NCAA tournament outside of a HE championship win. Still to have a shot at winning 17 games after the horrific October and November is a positive. They had a top 5 record in the nation since the break but it was too little too late and too inconsistent. I can't see the games live as I am still over seas for another 2 weeks. With the portal college hockey is more like Forest Gump's box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get. Anyway, hopefully we can finish the regular season with a win. Cheers

Made it back today after 3 weeks in Holland. Went directly to Matthews. NU may win but they are only an average HE team at times they look great other times they look lost. The 1st two lines are solid but after that we are often shaky but tonight they are moving. They take too many penalties, but when they are really skating they can play with anyone. Who knows?

They have the fourth lowest penalty minutes in the country this season. The next lowest HE team is nearly 25% higher.

And they were just announced as recipients of the HE Sportsmanship award this morning.

Agreed collectively they look good but about 6 or 7 guys have committed 80% of those infractions and they aren't the he good players

That was a frustrating game to watch (and not just because I had to listen to the BU announcers on ESPN Plus). The goals were largely due to loss of focus, leaving guys open in dangerous spots around the net. The Huskies looked okay in the third when they stopped playing passive and careful and started going at them. I really thought they had a good chance to win this one but they paid for mistakes.

I'm pretty upbeat looking towards next year. They have a lot of talent returning and Whitehead looks like the real deal.

I'd figured NU would be chasing late in the game. When it became 3-2, I thought they were in ok position. Then Celebrini sailed down the middle....
Always interested in seeing the next seasons roster come together.

After the second half of the first I really thought we had a good shot and then fell down 0-3 out of no where on some poor breakdowns. We did some good dirty work behind the net but could never figure out what to do with it after. The second line got freezing cold at the worst time this year and we really had no depth beyond that.

Overall really happy with how they started to come together in the back half of the season and with whiteheads development. The Merrimack game is what I’m going to choose to remember as the finale. Need to see some off season development from a good chunk of this team and pray for a few to stick around another year. If those things come together I’m pretty optimistic.

Also Campbell may be one of the best transfers of all time anywhere. What a fun player to watch. He showed some speed in this game that was unreal. I am selfishly hoping he sticks around but also really excited about his future prospects.

Despite the second half success, I can’t help but think this was a throwaway season and a case of “what should’ve been.” With the Comm Ave schools being back in a big way it is all the more disappointing.

This offseason will be interesting and will be key to defining future success. While unlikely, if NU can get JRitzy and Campbell back this team could be dangerous next season.

Would anybody else trade the Beanpot win over BU for a win last night?

I wouldn’t trade the beanpot win. While it sucks to see the season end and have BU be the one to do it I don’t think we have the consistency to make a deeper run. This team really can play with the best of hockey East, but can also play down to the worst.

I’d maybe trade the beanpot win for a significantly better first half. That was some tough to watch hockey and at the end of the day I’m a fan because it’s enjoyable to watch and I like supporting and seeing the players succeed.

I’ll take the Beanpot win, thank you. Especially beating bu. I think that a Beanpot championship does more for the fan base and students (our future alumni) than anything short of the HEA Final. Just my opinion after enduring 50+ Beanpots.

I wouldn’t call this season a “throwaway”. In some ways it was very satisfying to see the team overcome an horrendous start. Jerry could have easily “lost the locker room”. Instead, once he got everyone back in January, and despite having a weak freshman class and only two productive lines, he and his staff coached the team to a winning record. To do that required 5 wins against the top three teams in a strong HEA. Perhaps they weren’t quite as talented (in the eyes of the all-knowing pro scouts) as their Comm. Ave. neighbors, but they adjusted and managed to beat them thrice.

2023-24 turned out to be an interesting, and even a reasonably satisfying season. If the core of the team returns, plus a much stronger group of freshman forwards, we should need tickets to the 2025 semifinals at the Garden.

Agree with interesting and reasonably satisfying. Wondering if the freshman class would be less disappointing to you if the losses to the portal weren't as big? Recruiting is mapped out seasons ahead. Portal losses can't be addressed as quickly as they occur.

Campbell signs a pro deal also. I will miss watching him skate.

The undergrad portal is open and Doyle and Choupani have found their way into it. I don’t care about Doyle, he coughed up more bad turnovers than Walton and McDonald combined and that’s saying a lot!

choupani is a bit disappointing in that I had higher hopes for him as him as a player than his results showed.

Agree with these assessments. Doyle had one or two shining moments but otherwise was never a factor; Choupani showed much promise early-on, but IMO seemed to plateau this year. Wishing the best for both.

I'm bummed to see him in the hockey east to have to see BC play against him, but you guys landed a really good one in Joaquim Lemay. He's really fun to watch, really talented 2 way defenseman. I'm a bit surprised he landed at Northeastern and not Maine but not surprised to see him back east

Not sure if it factored but lemay played on the stars with whitehead.

Im not a fan of the volume of transfers in the portal in general, but thrilled we managed to pick up some missing pieces.
