Northeastern Huskies 2023-24: Brave New World or New Beginning?

Things popping up on Twitter today regarding the condition and future of Matthews Arena. A couple of people I know with ties to the program think some news is coming soon. Anyone else hearing things?

No confirmation of anything that I am aware of. However big, positive and more progressive development is likely in the works. NU had had a progressive development plan for the St Boltoph street parcel for decades. The issue has been the rising cost to undertake and community support. That may be a hurdle jumped with some creative financing thru earmarked gifts of more recent deep pocketed alumni who support such progress... wink, wink.

I live several hundred miles away and have no special insights into either the U in general or the hockey program in particular. But I'm less concerned about financing than I am about political/community support not to mention potential disruptions from the historic preservationists. If it's only a matter of paying for the expansion/rebuilding, I'm pretty sure NU will find a way.

Absolutely horrid start to this game. Stuff of nightmares. Hope walton makes up for that one. Every once in a while some of these guys make plays that make you think they’re on the take because it’s not possible they could be that bad

For as much as I thought BU outplayed them for a lot (most?) of this game, with so much offensive zone possession they looked like they were on the power play, NU absolutely gave them those three goals. But this group kept answering and staying in it. It's a testament to the resiliency in big games that was instilled under Madigan and kept going now under Keefe. They used to fold up under the pressure in February. What a crazy world we live in, huh.

Whitehead sure is making us not miss Devon Levi right now.

Just a wild game.

mcbain is right, BU dominates almost the entire game yet only gets goals off some dreadful, you can’t make this stuff up, type of NU bungles. The third BU goal was a mix of bad NU, good BU, but for all the offensive zone time BU had you’d think they pot some pretty goals. I don’t think they showed enough urgency around the net.

Despite that NU managed to come up big. Hryckowian really busting out the grit down to the final play.

Called it!

BC fan here. Congrats on your latest Beanpot title. Was in the Albany area Thanksgiving weekend and saw your lopsided win at RPI, the Sunday game, when your record was poor. Admittedly it was only RPI, but I had a sense your team would get better. I remembered Gunnarwolfe and the elder Hryckowian from past years but really took notice of Williams and H's kid brother.

Just thinking that if NU could get mulligans on the first RPI game (which didn't go well), the UVM GWG that was scored on an obvious offside play, and the whiffed late clearing pass vs UMass, we'd probably be having a whole different conversation re PWR positioning.

Well having gone up to Lowell I think I saw at least 10 hits that should have been called for penalties. My thought is that they were just physically man handled tonight. Our boys arent really built for that kind of hockey. It's always a let down after a pot win. Also eventually you need to score the 1st goal, you can't come from behind week after week. Not sure the better team won but this loss most likely eliminates us from the tournament consideration without us winning HE tourney. I have only one last game tomorrow at the barn. I'm of to The Netherlands for business till St Patrick's Day and thinking college hockey might be difficult thing to follow if my ESPN app isn't working in The Hague.

Without question, the most complete game this team has played all season. Smothering defense; won most of the puck battles; Whitehead there when he had to be. Friday night game wasn't as lopsided as the score suggests. Interestingly, 5-3 vs the top three teams in the league.

They win 2 next week and a deep run in the HE tourney..they could be a bubble team

Big come back game from whitehead and the team. I agree Friday wasn’t as lopsided as the scoresheet suggests. They actually played great Friday except for some defensive lapses and challenged goaltending. Nice to see an invigorated team following a tough loss.

Does campbell have a fifth year?

Both Campbell and Gunnarwolfe should be entitled to another year, but I think the odds of keeping both from the pros, or other distractions, are quite low. I’d be thrilled with another year from either player - ecstatic if we retained both.

I feel like you guys may have dug yourselves too deep of a hole in the beginning of the season unless you can get the HE auto bid, but your team was the best team I've seen at alfond all year. Last night was a clinic. Kudos. I don't want to see you again, respectfully lol.

Tough loss last night but this team has come so far that I'm not complaining. They're interesting, competitive and imperfect. Got a call from to renew my Season Tickets this week. The info from there is that "the team will 100% play at Matthews next season". Heard the same thing from another source, too.
