Northeastern Huskies 2016 Offseason Thread: Building Momentum

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2016 Offseason Thread: Building Momentum

Probably because he's the fourth best defenseman signing by the bruins in the past month, so he had to beat out Gryz, O'Gara, and Carlo, along with every other defenseman in the system.

He has to beat out other defensmen in the system no matter where he signs and the Bruins will probably have as much turnover as anyone on D for next year

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2016 Offseason Thread: Building Momentum

Have you seen the Bruins defense? How could he have no chance of making it? Degree in hand going to one of the organizations who need the most help on defense in the league. Yeah terrible decision

I don't care who he signs with I will eat the boston globe if he is in the NHL in the next 2 years. If he isn't, then signing early makes no sense. Some kids really have false opinions of themselves and fail to notice how good they have it currently.

You might change the term "some kids" to "most kids"! If he lands with the right team at the right time, he can make a place for himself. Years ago, Chris Nilan was drafted #227 and wound up with a lengthy NHL career as a fighter who could score the odd goal. We had a JV player (when we had a JV team) from Hingham IIRC who wound up in the NHL because of his willingness to be an enforcer.

Be careful what you promise. Don't eat the Boston Globe. It's not organic and we want to keep you around for a while.;)

Good statement. No one expected Josh Manson to have the success that he is enjoying at the next level and he didn't display nor does he have the skills on offense that Benning possesses. Let's see how it all shakes out for the kid and just wish him luck.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2016 Offseason Thread: Building Momentum

While I absolutely and totally join in wishing MB nothing but the best at the next level, I have to wonder if his signing along with the spate of other underclass signings (hello uch and QPAC) is a reaction by NHL clubs to protect their draft investments in the wake of Jimmy Vesey's dissing of Nashville (where Husky legend David Poile is President and GM). Had he stayed, I think he would have been a dominating defenseman that would have attracted national-level attention and with that, the potential for landing an even sweeter deal than the one he got from the B's.

It's not unusual for any college hockey player who shows potential, to come out early. But, the scenario that you describe is typical of players drafted in the first few couple of rounds. Every year there is a Vesey or Kevin Hayes.

That being said, there are a lot of scenarios/factors that determine why an NHL team might target any of their picks at a certain time. Team A may have several contracts available before they hit their 52 player ceiling; but looking ahead they might not anticipate having that room next year. They could have some limited cap space that actually makes their lower round picks more attractive to sign, i.e. on an ELC, you could cap max a player with his bonus and AHL contract but sign him well below the cap max for the NHL. Benning probably came out for the max at all levels - as did Manson - so he's being valued higher than most of the commentators here feel he is worth.

That is probably why J Stevens and ZAR both ended up returning. I would find it hard to believe that neither of them received some sort of offer from some team. J. Stevens was rumored for both Edmonton and Vancouver and ZAR Edmonton, Calgary and Pittsburgh. I've read that both are going to Edmonton's development camp in July. Whether or not offers were made, I have no idea but it would not surprise me if there was an offer or offers but it was just not compelling enough for them to leave.

Disagree. Manson was a great skater who was still learning how to play defense after spending most of his life as a forward. Manson was the best skater on the team and was the biggest and strongest kid on the team. He just needed defensive coaching. MB has been coached as a defenseman his whole life, but his skating is just not good and his stick is not great, either. I just don't see it. Speed and quickness are essential at the next level. I see that people on here are talking about him being signed. Has he signed with anybody? I was under the impression that he had not signed. But, hey, he has family in the business and hockey takes care of its own, so maybe he'll get his chance to prove me wrong.

On a team with Roy and then later Hedges, ZAR, AND Szmatula you are claiming Manson was the best skater on the team? Big and strong I will give you. Great positional player I will give you. Best skater? He is a good skater but on that team over his time frame, it's not even close to the best and the book on him at the time he came out was best described as skeptical.

BTW, Manson was playing defense for at least two seasons prior to his matriculation at NU.

In the end, you could be correct about Benning. I'm not judging either way. Let's see how it shakes out for the kid.

Speaking of Szmatula, does anyone think that this past season shakes out differently if he ignores the earworm, *cough*dad*cough*, and stays at NU?

He signed with the B's, News has been out since yesterday.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2016 Offseason Thread: Building Momentum

He hasn't signed as far as I know. Jeff Cox implied it was comng, but he was at the banquet and at no point did he say he was signed with Boston nor that it was pending. It appears he's going the free agency route.

I've had this discussion with others in person and I don't think we win Hockey East with him. Both because of his personality, how that personality would have reacted to being 1-11-2 or whatever we were, and because I don't think we make it without Gaudette and his development as 2C throughout the year, which likely would have been Smatz's spot. Not to mention Griffin was accelerated to take his spot and scored 4 or 5 game winners this year, including the GW interception and goal against BC.

He did seem, at times, to be oil to the water but I do wonder if he's the difference in some of those 1 goal games. But I also agree that his apparent lack of character would have come through even more under the early season adversity. This team the last two seasons seemed to pick up when both J. Stevens and ZAR got hot and contributed regularly and that last year much of their production was not contingent upon the play of their then line-mate Szmatula.

Thanx for the clarification.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2016 Offseason Thread: Building Momentum

Regarding Benning: the fact that we wore the A this year and doesn't next year, leads me to think he's not coming back. He's not NHL/AHL ready if you ask me.
I thought he would stay 4 years and get his degree.

When Cecere suddenly burst on the scene, you had to know someone from the D-corps was heading for the exit.

There's no question that he's gone. It was announced by Madigan at the banquet over the mic. It's not 100% untl pen hits paper I guess, but his scholarship was already given to Filipe and Cecere was added to the roster, so it's as close as you're going to get. At least the former of those two things can't be taken back now.
