Northeastern Huskies 2016 Offseason Thread: Building Momentum

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2016 Offseason Thread: Building Momentum

The Stevens boys played Youth in the Philly area and were dominant players in their age group. John then went to Dubuque in the USHL and played for Jim Montgomery and Nolan played at NTDP. Their home is in New Jersey. Perhaps you missed the photo of them posing with the Stanley Cup on the beach in New jersey?

Jr. Kings bud, figure it out. Btw, I am not knocking the kids (get what you can) only the system. Take a look at any USA or NTDP roster and please show me a player that is not connected. One of the most underhanded and corrupt programs ever concocted by elite American hockey families. All based off the wallets of the naive USA hockey Johnny wannabe’s from Topeka Kansas.

I don't know, those teams sure seem to perform well at the u18 level

They should, its the ex players, coaches and management exclusive club for their kids, paid for by the unsuspecting general USA hockey public.

With all due respect, and based on decades of experience with hockey at the grassroots level, this is simply an absurd statement. If you go back to the beginnings of the USA Hockey National Team Development Program (NTDP), you'll find precious few players have had ties to pro players, coaches, or executives. That does not mean close relatives don't show up on NTDP, D1 college, and other elite teams seemingly out of proportion to their numbers but it shouldn't be surprising. DNA has a lot to do with it, plus spending plenty of time in your impressionable years in close proximity to world class players while living the elite hockey culture frequently results in certain skills, knowledge, and insights rubbing off.

It's no different in other professions. Sons and daughters of accomplished musicians frequently become musicians themselves; Scions of surgeons frequently go into medicine. And so it goes.

What has not been acknowledged in this discussion is that offspring of pro players, coaches, and club executives whose kids don't develop elite-level skills simply don't make it to elite programs. I can take up a lot of space naming names of pro hockey offspring who never made it past the single-A youth level because they simply didn't have the skills needed to play at higher levels. In the end, hockey is still a meritocracy.

One thing the gentlemen indirectly touches on, and something that bothers me deeply, is that hockey has, unfortunately, become a rich man's game. For proof, just walk into any sporting goods shop and look at the price tags on hockey equipment. Sticks for upwards of $200? Give me a break! And the annual cost of keeping your kid in a Tier I travel program rivals what you'd pay in tuition at a good private or parochial school. This is why you don't see many gritty blue collar kids--like those at the core of the '80 Olympic Team-- involved with the sport anymore. Really, parents of the Mike Eruziones and Jim Craigs of today just can't afford it and the sport is poorer for it.

John played at Team Comcast, Salisbury Prep, Dubuque and then NU. He went to Festivals in 2009 and did not make NTDP. Nolan played Team Comcast thru Bantam and then played one year at Jr. Kings before NTDP.

I can name dozens of players over the last 6 years who played NTDP who have 0 connection to NHL.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2016 Offseason Thread: Building Momentum

Fascinating.

Is there a further point that you may have omitted?

I heard Keefer took the family to Sizzler and Madigan took advantage of the weather and cooked burgers and dogs on his grill.

Film at 11.

You don't need to be nasty to a poster who does excellent work covering Cedar Rapids and others at the junior hockey level. The fact that the coaches are keeping an eye on recruits, gauging where they are in their development before showing up on campus should be applauded. They aren't resting on their laurels as HEA champs and are keeping contact with the guys who will look to lead the repeat. That way they know where players will be when the get here, and can hit the ground running. Maybe he was relaying an offseason conditioning program. Maybe he was giving them an update with Benning leaving.

Speaking of Benning, I don't understand the animosity given towards him on this board (shocker). The fans on this board (most, not all), verbally crucified the kid over three seasons, and now that they got their wish that he leave, want him back for another year? It does not add up. He is 4 classes from his degree and will take them online, so he will get his degree. Multiple posters here have said that, so not sure why people are claiming he will not or he is dumb for not finishing it. He feels he is ready for the next step, who can blame a kid for looking to fulfill his dream? What if he comes back and gets hurt like Roy? Or takes a step back like Szmatula did year 1 to year 2? His stock was high and he wants to take advantage of it. All the posters who bashed him and want him back: you cannot have your cake and eat it too. Coach Madigan had nothing but good things to say about the kid, and everyone within the program wished him well. Whether it's Boston or Edmonton or somewhere else, we should be rooting for the kid to succeed, not write him off like he's a criminal for leaving.

I know Scott Herbst. He boldly stated that when Karlson left that Ross Olsson would be coming to NU to fill the spot. That's sums him up right there.

My point was more about Jason Smith than about those players. Smith is clueless. His coaching pedigree is girls lax. He should not be coaching at the D1 level. Benning had a great year under Foley and then we saw the result of his new position coach.

I have no problem with Matt Benning. As for a comparison to Szmatula...if Smatula had 1/10th the heart of his limemates let alone Benz he'd be signing his own contract this year. Was never a fan of his even in the USHL...40 foot player who needed everyone else around him to do the work. But I know what you're saying. I had my season tickets moved to the quiet side of the ice because of how badly the Don Cheery wannabes rode him and Nolan last year.

Good Luck to Matt Benning wishing him the best at the next level.

.

Where did I ever say Ross was coming in. Here is the post I made saying Jeff Cox is reporting it:

You know me? You are going to put words in my mouth at least get them correct:

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season
Jeff Cox is reporting that Ross Olsson will be heading to Northeastern this fall.

Edit: I got a tweet from Ross that said as of right now he is still heading to Cedar Rapids and is preparing for it.

So your retort is to point out that I correctly pointed out that you reported that Ross Olsson would be coming to NU?

Okay...have it your way...

I can't tell if the disconnect here is that you don't know that Herbst and Cox are different people, or that you can't tell Herbst was just relaying what Cox said, while adding a note that it may not be true.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2016 Offseason Thread: Building Momentum

Herbst was just relaying what Cox said, while adding a note that it may not be true.

What is reporting?

And, like this one, the note was added ex post facto...

So Minnesota is coming!? If so there will be many others who will wish to introduce him to the "Bronx Cheer".
