Re: Northeastern Huskies 2015 Off-Season Thread: Unrequited Love

The current Idaho Steelheads roster, is where Wade Macleod, Steve Quailer, Ludwig Karlsson and Chris Rawlings have all washed up in the mid level ECHL at between $350 and maybe $700 a week for Macleod who is the teams leading scorer. Some of these guys are approaching 30 and 3 of them were legit stars at NU, Karlsson has no degree. Good luck boys! When do the recruiters tell our kids, stay in school get your degree and study, because your not going likly to make it to the NHL from here, pehaps Joey V throws them all a few bucks every month in the offi season now. Sadly a few of these guys were NHL draft picks I think. I guess you can Ray Ortiz it and make a career out of it working 2 jobs while playing and becoming a local star in a place like Huntsville AL in low level SPHL with a weekly cap for 20 guys that has to be less than 10k in the D league of hockey or perhaps make a career out of playing in Europe where Jared Mudryk has earned a slightly better cap in a 10 year career over there at nearly 35, I guess all hope to have a Tim Thomas like metamorphosis after nearly a decade in the minors to pursue a dream. Hopfully there is a support group for these kids.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2015 Off-Season Thread: Unrequited Love

Decided to take advantage of my lunch break today and dig into the recruiting situation for next year. Hockey may be over on the ice but I'm already anxious for next season. ~ 201 days until it's back!

Forwards coming in:
Jason Cotton- '95 birth year. 6'3'' 180 lbs. 27-31-58 line in West Kelowna (BCHL)
Sam Kurker- '94 birth year. 6'2'' 202 lbs. 2012 2nd round pick of St. Louis. 22-22-44 in 50 games this year at Sioux City (USHL).
Adam Gaudette- '96 birth year 6'1'' 172 lbs. 10-15-25 in 41 games for Cedar Rapids (USHL). Seen as a projected mid round NHL pick.
Pat Schule- '94 birth year. 5'8'' 160. 30-44-74 in 46 games for New Jersey (USPHL)
James Winkler- '95 birth year. 6'3'' 205. 13-2-15 in 45 games with Youngstown (USHL).

Defensemen coming in:
Jon Barry- '95 birth year. Spent a lot of time with Thayer this year, prep stats aren't easily accessed. Has 1-2-3 in 10 games for South Shore (USPHL). Left shot.
Eric Williams- '95 birth year. 22-28-50 in 52 games for Aurora (OJHL). Left shot D.

Goalie coming in:
Ryan Ruck- '94 birth year. 6'1'' 181 playing in Des Moines (USHL). 3.17 GAa, .903 SV% in 27 games.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2015 Off-Season Thread: Unrequited Love

A couple of notes:

I expect Winkler to spend another year in Youngstown.

Pat Schule is a bit bigger than you noted. He's about 5'10" 175. His line with the Hitmen was 55 -35-54-89 50PIMs His team blew through its playoffs without a single loss.

Eric Williams was First Team OJHL ( a league of about 20 teams ). His Aurora team (Source of Mike McLaughling and Dylan Sikura) is ranked #3 among the junior teams across Canada. Jon Barry, OTOH, is said to be a pretty solid defensive D. We can sure use a few of those!

Gaudette was slowed by several minor injuries. The coaches seem particularly high on him.

I have no idea if we have any recruited walk-ons, or if there is a bit of scholarship $ available now that Mike Gunn has retired.

Can anyone add to this?

Jim Madigan providing intermission coverage on NESN for BC-Vermont. BTW, how is NU crediting those who purchased tickets for Game 3 of last week's series?

Loved his answer when they were talking about a goal the UVM had called back "I'm not sure Im the right person to answer that" but went on to support the officials decision. Thought he gave a great game analysis!

Do any of you know if NU is one of the growing list of schools that allow athletes who left in good standing to pursue a pro career to return after it ends (whether ceremoniously or not) and finish their degree with the cost still covered by their original scholarship? As an outsider it seems like something Roby would likely support.

You are correct in assuming that Roby would support this as it falls under his umbrella (Sportmanship, principles (his) and basketball). My first question would be: Who pays for the scholarship (or partial)? It can't be charged against the team's allowable limit. I hope the NC$$ keeps its nose out of it. Which schools in D1 Hockey (for example) are offering this?

I know BU does, I believe the B1G passed a conference wide proposal to do it, I'm sure many more schools do, but there isn't a public database anywhere. It doesn't count against the scholarship limit as they are no longer on the team, but the money is probably coming out of the athletic department budget at most schools that partake.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2015 Off-Season Thread: Unrequited Love

Do you feel that the retro scholarship offer is an important factor in the decision making process of most potential recruits?

I'm not sure, it's something, but not sure how big of a something it is or how it is talked about to recruits. Also depends on how many schools are offering it, obviously.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2015 Off-Season Thread: Unrequited Love

Thanks. I wonder if it is made contingent on the athlete staying for a minimum of, say, 2 years. If they did that at Kentucky, for their Bballers, they would have no liability at all.;)

I recall hearing Kurker as BU. Did he switch to Huntington?

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2015 Off-Season Thread: Unrequited Love

He went there fresh out of HS, IIRC. Played a year and a half, left last season to go play in the USHL, where he is playing very well as an overaged player. About 3 months ago or so he committed to NU for the upcoming fall. St. Louis has 2 more years on his NHL rights I believe, so his stay on Huntington may be a short one.

If he stays more than one year, does he become a free agent, because he was drafted in 2012? He probably needs at least two years for a degree as he only did 1 1/2 years at bu. Hopefully he gets it done before he leaves.

My credit card was credited for the cost of the tickets a week ago.

Have you ever met the man? Have you asked him a question that implied that you disagreed with his "principles" approach? Do you understand why he nearly wrecked (I'm being polite) the hockey program four years ago? Please don't believe all that you read in the newspapers.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2015 Off-Season Thread: Unrequited Love

Thanks for the article. As usual, it's all about Peter, when the focus should be on the team. To the media's credit: They've given plenty of ink to the team. Peter should be a tiny sidebar to the main story.
