Northeastern Huskies 2015 Off-Season Thread: Unrequited Love

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2015 Off-Season Thread: Unrequited Love

Weird that Bunyon or Benedetto aren't on the ice.

There's been a gradual changing of the guard since Dan Schachte came aboard as Officiating Director a couple of years ago. A lot of new names among both referees and linesmen which, by itself, isn't a bad thing. And if you haven't figured it out for yourself, Cameron Voss is Schachte's fair-haired boy who can do no wrong.

Perhaps we have some defensive help coming. Nice award for Eric Williams.

Trevor Owens was named best d in the USPHL his last year there, and he turned out to be a good find, solid defenseman all year. Statistically one of the best on the team. Williams and Jon Barry should be welcome additions to the d-corps next year. I imagine we'll see Benning/Darou, Sauce/Barry, Williams/Owens, something like that. Way too early to be thinking up lines and pairings, but hey, hockey fever never ends.

You'd better hope that Williams is better then Owens!

Obviously I do and I think so. my point was sometimes these juniors accolades get tossed aside, but we got a past winner in Owens who proved to be up to the billing. Williams has been highly touted for 2 years now. I am excited for him to come to campus and get some time.

Noticed in my pairings I left out Cockerill...will be an interesting crunch for PT next year, on D and F.

No worries.
I am not a big Owens fan but hope he lives up to your expectations when he takes on more minutes next year.

If I had my druthers, I'd let Cockerill develop as a defenseman (and make him lose 10 pounds) and make Sauce into the RW he has always wanted to be. I don't know if he has the speed, but if we can keep the puck in the zone long enough for him to catch up, his O skills would be useful - as we saw when he play down low on the PP.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2015 Off-Season Thread: Unrequited Love

I think it's time to give up on putting Sauce into a forward role. I was completely on board with it for the last two years, but I've come to accept that it's just not going to happen. At very least get him off the **** penalty kill though. We have more than enough forwards anyway, we only lost Snyderman and Reid. We have a couple of scoring line worthy freshmen (and Sikura) who will all be battling for the one open top six spot and Sauce isn't going to be a checking line winger.

You're probably correct and I won't get my druthers. You are right. He couldn't kill a power play with an AK-47 set on automatic. He has some good skills, but the PK is not one of them.

It won't happen but I agree. I'd slot him in Snydeman's spot with ZAR and Szmats. Oksanen was a pretty similar d-man (good offensively, shaky defensively, a million turnovers) and he scored 23 goals on a non-Eichel line for bu this year. He has a better shot than Sauce, but I think Saucerman could at least give Snydeman's production, potentially more.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2015 Off-Season Thread: Unrequited Love

It's just one man's opinion/post, but NU placed three players on Jeff Cox's Massachusetts All-State Team. D-men Ryan Shea and Dan Petrick were placed on the first team, while forward Matt Filipe made second team. Filipe and Shea I believe are slated for a 2016 arrival, and Petrick is scheduled for 2018. Nice to see some top in-state talent coming our way.

I believe that the coaches have Sam Kurker slotted in Snydeman's spot, at least initially. We seem to have a paucity of RS forwards. Don't know why.

IIRC oksanen started the season a the LW on Eichels line. Then rodriguez got hot and was moved into that spot.

I haven't heard any noises about pro defections. I like the sound of silence.

Filipe's potential is much better than be played this season. Complacency, playing against such inferior talent, etc. A year in USHL next season with CR will do him a world of difference.

NU also on Hingham's Matt Demelis. NU target Jack Adams chose Princeton yesterday.

Do you think playing against "inferior" talent hurt him at all this year? Similar to Miles Wood returning to the ISL when some thought he could play NCAA? curious, as I know nothing about Mass HS hockey.

I agree with this 100%. I've spoken to some players directly and some other hockey sources. Based on what I have been told, I would be shocked if Roy/Szmatula/Benning/ZAR/anyone were to jump to the pro ranks. Obviously nothing is set until Fall classes begin, but we'll have a good idea of what is happening by the banquet on April 16th.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2015 Off-Season Thread: Unrequited Love

We were not recruiting Jack Adams with any intensity. Sometimes a coach is at a game to watch someone else and stories get started about a different player. I find it interesting that his "Hokydad" kept posting about how he loved Providence, where his older bro plays.

I met Matt Felipe at the Beanpot. Impressive kid with "Fernie Flaman" hands. He could probably turn a walnut into a pile of crushed nuts with one hand. He could turn out to be something special. His dad certainly was.

Makes me wish I had another year at NU like many of my DH brethren. The 2016 class is shaping up to be loaded, with Filipe, Jozafek, Shea, Melaragni, Armstrong all slated for arrival. They will be a lot of fun to watch when the show up.
