Northeastern Huskies 2014 Offseason: Resurrection's Over....Now What?

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014 Offseason: Resurrection's Over....Now What?

As for talking to JM, I do not need to. I never talked to Crowder, I never talked to Cronin, I will never talk to JM. I am fair about that. I am not looking for buddy-buddy relationships with these guys. I actually do not like dislike JM, I have never met him. I just dislike him as the hockey coach.

It was dumb to hire someone with zero experience or background to be the coach of this team. As someone who has spent the bulk of the last year trying to land a full time perm job, (i start tuesday) I still find it hard to believe the AD hired someone with little to no experience behind the bench or running any sort of sports team to take over. The highlight on his CV was former player, twenty odd years ago. And nice guy. So far thats landed us one 3 game playoff series in 3 years and the tanking of a program that had been on the rise prior to him taking over.

I just figure either the team does not keep track of scoring chances, or you know what they are and do not want to share because you know it will prove me right, that the defense showed zero improvement last year.

It is obvious that you have never spoken to the coaches. I don't think a "buddy-buddy" relationship is what you should be seeking. You would benefit from having a better understanding of what the coaches are try to do and how they are approaching the problems they have to solve.

Congratulations on finding a job. I'm sure that lifts a major weight from your shoulders. It would be a good idea if you refrained from posting during the workday until you are acclimated - in perhaps 6 months:rolleyes:

I have no idea of the existence or availability of the stats you want, nor do I know of any team or service that publishs them.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014 Offseason: Resurrection's Over....Now What?

I'm not saying they can't take large strides but its hard to not be worried about the defense going into next year. Not only did they lose their best d-man in Manson, but they also lost their best defensive forward, in Pimm. I think Szmatula is an outstanding defensive forward and I expect him to take over that role but who is going to take over for Manson? Benning certainly has the talent and will have the opportunity to, Lauwers is solid in his own end by doesn't skate well enough, Saucerman turns the puck over too much and makes too many bonehead plays to be a #1 d-man. Gunn was brutal last year. Darou and Fennell are depth guys. I have high hopes for Couturier and Cockerill but unless your Jamie Oleksiak a freshman shouldn't be your #1 guy. I'm not trying to be doom and gloom before the season even starts, but I do think its a legitimate questions.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014 Offseason: Resurrection's Over....Now What?

Sorry to disappoint you, but you won't be seeing Couturier this coming season. He was never a '14-'15 recruit. Cockerill will be joined by Trevor Owens, who was voted the Top Defenseman in the USPHL last season. He should help very quickly. There are 3-4 more D's coming in Sept. 2015. There is neither room on the roster nor scholarship money available to bring in any of the others for this year.

Don't confuse the USPHL with the USHL. There's a world of difference. (Some folks who know about these things claim the "P" in USPHL stands for "Pretender.")

Of course, you're correct. Whether the P stands for "pretender" or "premier", The league has a few quality D1 caliber players. Hopefully Owens is one of them. James Winkler, who was highly rated when we recruited him, played for a terrible Portland team and produced very little. His draft rating dropped , of course. It will be interesting to see if he is taken.

A new recruit.

96 F Adam Gaudette (Thayer Academy) commits to Northeastern. Big part of the puzzle for Thayer this season. Late 96 posted a 29-37--66 line.

Gaudette has made the Cedar Rapids 30 man roster.

what about Lincoln Griffin from Thayer?

Same answer.

Gaudette sounds like a terrific pickup. That makes three players from the same Thayer team (whose coach played at bu) and two from Aurora. That certainly stretches the recruiting budget.;)

Wow. I don't recall the pipeline being this loaded in....well, a long, long time.

Sounds like this is another good pickup. I think this years incoming class is OK, but sounds like the next 2 potentially could be strong.

Also from OTB, this kid is from the same program that produced Jonathan Drouin and Mike Matheson. This kid puts up points! Keefe and Foley are on a recruiting tear.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014 Offseason: Resurrection's Over....Now What?

I assume he will be scheduled to arrive in 2016-2017? That class looks better by the day.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014 Offseason: Resurrection's Over....Now What?

Thought I'd bump this thread with some of the notable talking points Coach Madigan made at last nights FOH meeting regarding schedules and incoming players.

Regarding schedules: for the 2014-15 season, the dates we have all seen are accurate, with the exception of the Providence games in December. As of last night, they are still TBD, the exact dates. Of our three UMass games, the one on December 16 is the non-conference game. Exhibition scrimmage will be a SUNDAY this year (Oct 5), with a league game vs Vermont without Jimmy the following Saturday. Last note is that we added a game to bring us to 34 total- we will be hosting Yale on January 6. For 2015-16, Coach said the schedule is just about finalized, and it will be a mirror image of most of the '14-15 schedule. So we will be hosting QU/Colgate, going to Yale/Minnesota, in addition to having a home-and-home with Holy Cross and hosting Michigan State. We will also be playing BU earlier in the year, in the first half of the season, and we will no longer have NC games versus Hockey East opponents.

Regarding incoming recruits: Coach confirmed there will be six new players wearing the red and black this season, bringing the team total to 28. Two he could not name, as their paperwork still had to be finalized and completed. He did say one was a transfer student (which can be assumed is Ryan Rosenthal), and one is an accelerated player (whom I believe to be Nolan Stevens). As for the other four, he did say a few words about each one of them.

--Dylan Sikura: The staff is excited about his offensive potential, and expects him to be among the top 6 forwards right from the get-go.
--Jake Theut: Coach praised his athleticism at 6'3'' 195. He will join the goalie duo of Witt and Roy.
--Trevor Owens: A traditional stay-at-home defenceman that Coach expects to bring leadership and physicality to the D corps.
--Garrett Cockerill: Coach had the most to say about him. Said that Cockerill "might have the best stick of all our defencemen," which seconds what HHound has said here multiple times about him having a booming shot. Coach also alluded to Cockerill not being in the most ideal shape and condition, so Dan Boothby will be "attached to his stomach" making sure it doesn't grow any larger. Cockerill, Theut, and Owens will all be on campus during Summer 2 to work on their conditioning with some of the returning uppclassmen.

On the topic of conditioning, Coach expressed great pleasure in the reports he has gotten so far this offseason. Obviously he cannot be there in person due to NCAA rules, but he seemed very happy with what he has been told and what he knows. He said that this is where the team made great strides last year, conditioning in the off/preseason to prepare better for the upcoming season, and I think we can all say it paid dividends the first half of the year. Often I felt we were still flying high when other teams were gassed in the third, Coach expects that to be the case all season next year.

Last thing of note for me, when asked about the Gentleman's Agreement that has been in the college hockey news this summer, Madigan declared that he and his staff are (unsurprising to me at least) in favor of the agreement.
