Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014 Offseason: Resurrection's Over....Now What?

The schedule for 2014-2015 will be excellent and will test this team. It's simple does this team have the horses to measure with the elite programs only time will tell. However looking at the roster and the upcoming freshman we must be optistic, yet cautious . My concerns are ,, will Roy have another productive year. Will Szmatula improve on his stats from last year. Will they find a defensive forward that can fill Pimms success, will Witt win games or have slumps like other great goalies had (Gillies) . Last but not least can our defense improve minus the captain.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014 Offseason: Resurrection's Over....Now What?

I don't think Roy is a worry, he should produce unless he's completely unmotivated, in which case he's probably doing his future with the Ducks or anybody else a giant disservice. He isn't Gaudreau, he doesn't have a spot in the NHL waiting for him when he leaves. He still has to show something.

Every other concern though, concerning.

+1.

It comes down to this: If the defense holds up and Witt plays like he did pre-Patrick-Brown-freakish-BP-goal, it's going to be a fun ride. I, for one, am not losing any sleep over their ability to put the puck in the net.

Side note: It would be great if some of the LA Kings' magic rubbed off onto Asst Coach John Stevens' two Husky offspring.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014 Offseason: Resurrection's Over....Now What?

Mike McMahon of CHN took an in-depth look at Hockey East Powerplay numbers from last year. Obviously we all know this is an area that need work, but holy cow I did not realize how far down the line we were. Link provided below, which would explain it better than I can.

Factor in the plethora of SHG allowed and the picture gets even worse.....

Lack of defenseman who can move the puck and make good decisions + bad PP coaching = really awful PP. With the talent up front, they should be middle of the pack just by showing up.

Here's hoping it is priority 1 or 1a for the coaches as soon as they all step on the ice together.

In draft news, OverTheBoards released an article containing different scouts anonymous opinions on various 2014-2016 draft prospects. James Winkler was the only NU guy listed. Here is what one scout had to say: "“I’ve liked this kid for a while – he had a terrible year. That team was not good. He came in, a lefty shot off the right wing, and fired it way off the kid’s far pad and his winger banked it home. That’s how you score later in life. He just doesn’t have enough grit. Inconsistent shift to shift and even throughout the shift he can glide around. Doesn’t have a mean bone. He’s got the nice heavy shot, but he’s basically passive. He makes good hockey plays but his positioning is lacking so he doesn’t make it easy for himself. Potential power forward in the making. Raw but I think he could do it. I’m pretty sure he’s going to Youngstown next year."

James was ranked 193 on NHL Central Scouting's final ranking back in April, down from his 110 ranking at the midterm. Jason Cotton also fell from 118 to 162. Jon Barry is our highest rated recruit, coming in at 147 after not being ranked in the midterm rankings. Current players Dalen Hedges, Zach Aston-Reese, and John Stevens, as well as incoming freshmen Nolan Stevens and Dylan Sikura are also all eligible to be drafted this year.

Official release for Theut, Owens, Sikura, and Cockerill comprising the incoming class, with commentary from Madigan: http://gonu.com/news/2014/6/18/MHKY_0618143003.aspx

I expect Stevens and Rosenthal will be added soon, similar to how Hedges, Harms, and Messa were added late in the game last summer.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014 Offseason: Resurrection's Over....Now What?

One bit of news that I hadn't heard of from any media outlet- Clay Witt was invited to attend the Tampa Bay Lightning development camp. Runs the first week of July, saw it on the Goalie News website. Congrats to Clay!

Anybody else been getting calls looking for $ ?? I've told them that I am not donating a cent to the University or Men's Hockey Program until The BOZO, Peter Roby is either fired or resigns. I'd recommend others that feel the same way as I do about The Bozo do the same. If the powers that be start to equate donation $ or lack thereof with The Bozo's behavior/record maybe something will happen. Hope everyone is having a nice Summer.

PC released their schedule. Games are set for 12/3 at Matthews, time TBD, and 12/6 at PC, 4:00.

I know where you're coming from and sympathize but you might be biting off your nose to spite your face. My solution: Send (or give) your hockey-only donation to Jimmy personally so you can be assured it goes to the Coach's Discretionary Fund. I'm continuing to donate that way because I don't want one man to be bigger than the program I passionately care about, and I don't want the program to suffer because of vindictiveness on my part. At the end of the day, it's all about the players and the players aren't part of the problem.

Still a good idea to make your feelings known in response to those incessant phone calls and emails.

FlagDude states Yale will be visiting NU on January 6. Midweek game. That's five games for NU in nine days, against some quality opponents.

FlagDude is correct! And you're right about that stretch of games, which undoubtedly will have much to do with how things finally settle out.

BTW NU visits The Whale in 2015.

So let me understand this: USA soccer advances by losing???

How come that didn't work for the Huskies last March?

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014 Offseason: Resurrection's Over....Now What?

Cam Darcy was taken by Tampa with the 185th pick in the draft this weekend. I didn't realize that he was still draft eligible. Being a year older than most draftees, Darcy should be aiming for a spot with Syracuse in the AHL. Being sent back to Junior or to a lower Pro league wouldn't be promising for his career. Just read the Tampa press release on him. Above average hands in tight, needs to improve skating and upper body strength. Seen as a checking line player and/or minor league depth. As compared to a current Lightning player, they call him Alex Killorn 'lite'.

Dylan Sikura picked by Chicago in the 6th Round of the NHL draft. Of the 210 players selected, only 60 were under 6'0. Sikura is listed on GoNU.com as 5'11, so he was in that minority of the draft. He was also the third of just four players taken from the OJHL. Providence incoming D Jake Walman was the first, a third round pick.

Anybody have the numbers of players drafted by league? I am to lazy to look it up myself.
