Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Nice job Huskies big win against a ranked team. I listened tonight but had a friend at the game who was texting me. Again he said CR was the differance but NU played tenatious hockey and took advantage of poor Wolverine desisions on the ice. The goal Rawlings let in was really not even a quality shot according tot he anouncers. So again, Rawlings stops lots of shots, but NU outshot 34 to 22 and 12 to 6 in the 3rd frame but we did have a PP goal and went 1 for 3 on PP , still Although PP is only 5 for 53 this season tied for 57th in DIV I. However 3 stright wins is good and so is 13 goals in 3 games. If we take both games against Irish, I say we are ranked on Tuesday.

Don't count on it.

Big win though. The Pimm-Quailer-Ferreiro line dominated with three goals. Rawlings had a big-game performance. Glad to see him stepping up. Now can we split against Notre Dame?

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

It "sounded" like we earned a quality win against a quality team that didn't take us seriously. More importantly, we got contributions from guys who don't show up on the stats sheet and some who seem to be showing up more often like Cody and Quailer. Even Vermeersch is blooming again as a center rather than as a wing. He and Quailer combined for our first goal, and the team responded by dominating the rest of the game. I love the idea that UM gave up four straight goals to us and couldn't get the usual late charge going. Rawlings should feel very positive after giving up a questionable first goal and then slamming the door on the Wolverines. His positive state of mind is a incalculable asset to him. The defense must have been helpful, although they sounded very generous (shaky) in the first period. It sounded like Manson had a great game. He only started playing D around this time last year.

Three cheers for Pimm who had three points tonight. He may be an important piece of the puzzle for this team. He's not our fastest skater, but he does some clever things on the ice and provides some real personality in the locker room.

I wonder what JM will do with McLaughlin when he returns. Perhaps he will take Stone's place centering Reid and Vrolyk. When and where will we see Dongara. I had expected a lot more from him this year. It's nice to have a bit of depth in case of injury. Speaking of injury, what's the story with Bitetto? He hasn't looked quite right to me and it sounded like he was playing hurt tonight. I hope it's nothing serious

Great going team!
Coming back with 4 unanswered against the Wolverines .. nice work.
Enjoy the week.. remember, practice does not make perfect.. Perfect practice does! :) (thanks to the Great #8 for that)
Notre Dame will not overlook us.

NU got a point against MC, so certainly a point can be had against ND. More than that's going to be tough. ND sits second in PWR and KRACH (behind MC in both) after the win at Lake St tonight.

After losing Caporusso, Hagelin, Rust, and Vaughn to graduation, Michigan is down this year--they just don't realize it. Besides, Northeastern is competitive year in and year out and every team in college hockey must be taken seriously. Ex.: Sacred Heart's win over Yale.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Wins over Michigan hockey and St. John's bball in the same weekend...pretty impressive. Even though both teams are not as good as they were last year these type of name recognition wins should be helpful in bringing in the casual fans.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

I said over on the other board at the beginning of the year that I felt NU was going to be better then people thought, certainly not 10th place like one guy predicted them to be. Even with losing the top recruit, NU was still going to be wicked deep up front, which they have proven to be, Rawlings was going to be better because that is all he does, is get better year over year, and if the defense could be any good, NU would be dangerous.

October was rough. People on this board wrote them off, again, 2nd year in a row (whoever Rossi is). Well, as usual, its not how a team starts, it how they progress, and while tonight is obviously an anomaly on the score board, the play itself has been growing to this point going back to the tough Merrimack weekend where they only got 1 out of 4 points.

I admit to not being blown away by the Madigan hire. It was more of the process itself, the JM himself, and also hiring a coach who has not coached in 18 years, and only been a part time scout for a portion of it. But he, and his bright young staff seem to be getting the hang of this now.

Yeah, the special teams need some work, and after shortening the bench a bit to much that first month during close games, the staff is doing a better job of getting the right guys minutes, and using the full lineup more. Plus, putting the Dong up in the stands has really helped. Exciting player, yes, skilled enough to play every game, no. The kid hurts whatever line he is on. Good job by JM for seeing that, and rotating him in and out, though lately out since the team is on a roll. He does need to sit Manno here at some point, third retaliation penalty tonight. Don't know who the spare forward is out in ND, but Manno needs to understand he cannot got after guys when he is not pleased with the outcome of a non-call, or a cheap hit he absorbs.

Rawlings is going to let in some cheapies now and then, but who does not? The team is going to lose again, but the way this is set up now, 9 in conference home games, win 7, 5 in conference road games, win 2 or 3, they should be right outside or close to home ice when the season ends, and again will be prime for a good run to the Garden.

All our OCC wins our going to help our conference mates with their NCAA chances. To bad teams like Merrimack could not do the same for us. Keep getting those W's against Alabama and Army though, maybe one day you can play a real OCC schedule.

Congrats to the Huskies! Looks like you guys gave ND quite a welcome to HE game ;)

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

I think the loudest cheers at the BU-BC game tonight was when they showed your score. Wow. Nice win.

That might've had a bit to do with BC's general disdain for ND. And many others going ***?

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

NICE WIN!..that was unreal even watching on the slow feed that make the hockey look like a 1950’s sports reel. We all know that the even prior to this very one sided and unusual game, and the eventual lop sidded outcome that rankings mean nothing...NU has one of the best goalies in the country when he is on and can play hockey with anyone. NU lost some top signed recruits to BC and the AHL when Cronin left to go coach the Maple Leafs, you add in a new coach one who was away from the game for 18 years and you start slow, if those kids had stayed, you could argue that this team would be a very ranked team in terms of the math formulas, not the voted rankings by coaches and sports writers those don’t mean crap. So I figure what has happened is that NU had a patchwork of kids and some newbie’s who had never played together at the start of the season, and NU struggled, yet still had 2 OT looses to BC and a tie at Merrimack!

Now, they are getting comfortable and their top line is as good as any team in the country. I will still say that last nights games was of course, not a measuring stick just a bad night of ND. However, it’s a kind of message to ND and ..it say’s Welcome to Hockey East, where on any given night you can get beat by a bunch of mostly unknown, not ranked kids primarily for New England and the Northeast with a smattering of overlooked Canadians who want to beat a top team. I look for a close match up on Sunday. However, if they win on Sunday. Look for them to be ranked on Tuesday! It was nice not to be in a nail bitter for a change. Just enjoy the moment, here is the best part …23 goals in the last 4 games…something is working, that’s all I am going to say! Like I said before they would be fun to watch but I didn’t see them gelling this season, so I may stand corrected, we will know more in February. Also, top to bottom the teams O on all the lines is pretty dam good. They are all working hard and moving the puck in transition very well.

I will add that new teams who have not seen CR before in net may get a bit freaked out as it takes time to try and solve him. I saw lots of traditional shots on him last week and last night and that’s not how he gets beat, I mean really who squares up better than CW..ah nobody. In fact he could have had a shut out both weekends, last nights PP goal and the even strength were both deflections. However 2 road wins against top mid western teams. that’s pretty historic feat for NU hockey and the credit has to go to the coach and his new staff. Nice job coach!

I hope this is a wake up call to all the people who whined (no offense) in August that we would have no talent. This team is good. The line combinations are finally what they should be and as far as the best freshman in Hockey East, he ain't over at BC, resides right here on Huntington and is scoring at over 1 PPG. Now, UND obviously had one of those nights, but the fact is, anyone who looked at this roster and said no talent was fooling themselves. Last year, you had guys under-performing, coming back too early from injuries and being stuck in a rigid defensive system without the ability to use their talent.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Great games for NU in the last couple weekends! For a westerner who unfortunately doesn't get to see them, are they playing a drastically different style than they did under Cronin, thus needing time to adjust to a new system under Madigan? Whatever it is, keep it up!!
