Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

One good weekend... just one consistent wknd..
will provide something positive to build off of heading into Thanksgiving, then Mich/ND.
C'mon Huskies.. let's find it!

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

I bought tickets to the Notre Dame game a few weeks ago when I thought this team had a fighting chance to steal a win (also before ND announced they were coming to HE). My brother lives in South Bend which is a large reason why I'm going. He's never been to a college hockey game so I figured it would be a cool weekend. I need to remember to pack a brown paper bag to wear for the game.

If he's in South Bend, then he's ideally situated to become a casual ND fan. The Irish under Jackson are a lot of fun to watch, and the new arena has gotten rave reviews (although tickets are not very easy to come by).

It's unfortunate that NU is having such a bad season; normally, I'd never root against NU, even against ND, but under the circumstances, a loss would hurt ND (who are likely to be in the hunt for a top seed in the NCAA tournament) a lot more than NU...

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Echoing Rossi's sentiments, I said on DHD that they look like a 5-7 win team and it would be great if they win 10 but I don't think it will happen. I disagree about his talent evaluations to some degree. It's a talented 1st and 2nd lines, even the third should be able to compete in HE. On D the first two pairings are right there too. Not as good as people here think but at least average at the HE level. I like the freshmen, Karlsson and Manno. I think Manson may be better suited for MJ but plenty of other players in the league have had to adjust their style (Bigos?) and have found success in the league. Even Cornell has done great when playing one on one D. The 4th line is a dissapointment although occasionally Tuckerman shows glimpses of why he had ~25 pts his freshmen year.

The team has plenty of talent, unfortunately it's not being utilized to their styles. The style of play is almost exactly the same as the early 90's teams except not all of these guys should be out there in a quick transition game or cycling. I'd have different lines playing different systems when possible but I doubt that would ever happen. Would love to see a line of Quailer, Manno and maybe McLaughlin together. Then throw either Karlsson or Dongara on the first line. I know people aren't crazy about Dongara but if you're going to play a quick transition game off your trap, he should help you out with his speed.

If they keep up the same style of play, they may actually match up against UML and Maine ok. But, UML is running teams into the ice with that system. Not so much at Matthews. Right now, they look like a 10th place team. They'll get better but so will everyone else.
So to sum up: They are not quite talented enough, they aren't quite deep enough and the Coaching Staff has them playing a style that doesn't give them their best chance to win. Is that about it?

1-7-2 with 28% of the schedule played, one of the worst starts thru 10 games in the history of the program, and I am getting big grumbles from lots of alumni in e-mails, that I can't share here.

I thought it was the alumni who were all excited about the hiring of Jim Madigan?

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Huskies looked good tonight. Not great, but definitely better than the past few games. They got more shots on goal, had a lot more success clearing the puck out of their own zone, took advantage of some opportunities, and played a very solid defensive game. They did seem to relax a bit in the beginning of the 3rd period though. Providence had sustained pressure, and they were able to get a goal to make it 4-2 at the time with a lot of momentum, but as the 3rd progressed, the Huskies rebounded a bit and play more or less evened out.

Rawlings had another good night and made a few really nice saves. Karlsson's and Stone's goals were both good shots--Karlsson from the slot and Stone from the left faceoff circle, Ferriero's was a nice deflection, and Quailer's goal was a complete effort. Made a play in the defensive zone and took it too the house. Beaudry probably should have had that one--he got a piece of it but it trickled through.

McLaughlin left with an injury in the 2nd period and didn't return. I didn't see what happened to him, it was away from the puck. There was no penalty on the play and no hostile reaction from the bench, so it wasn't a dirty hit. Hopefully he'll be back soon.

Obviously 2-7-2 is not where we wanted to be right now, but you have to look at our past win totals after coaching changes. I think everyone would agree that Cronin was good for NU and he started with an abysmal first season, 3 wins if i recall. I dont like seeing us get out shot every game but I think this speaks to the fact that Madigan has a new system and the personnel he has does not fit his system perfectly. Plus we had a lot of departures. The two things I look for is how the team plays the second half of this season once they really know his system, and I also am curious to see if the recruits he gets fit his style better than some of the current players. I think you really need to wait till the 3rd season to really evaluate a new coach. By then he will have two classes of mostly his own recruits to start filling the roster. I also think the newer, more transition focused style will attract more offensive players than Cronin's defense first / dump and chase style. Time will tell

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

A great 4 point weekend.. Officials tonight were fairly horrendous, with questionable calls in favor of VT all night. However, our Huskies cycled the puck like an NHL team and didn’t give up a goal on a late 1st period BS 5 minute major. That was kind of the turning point in this game. Although, lets keep it in perspective as clearly Vermont is not a very good team this season, and CR again made 37 saves and only let in a truckler of PP goal with 2 ticks left on the clock. It was great to see so many alumni at the fan feast. Fahey thanks for the IPA’s. I am very happy with the 9 goals in 2 games this weekend as that is the kind of offensive effort we will need week in and week out to make the HE playoffs. Overall it was the best 2 games they have played since before Cronin was suspended. Now we go out the play some mid western powers and we can see what they are really made of. I think they will compete! They had a lot of fight in them tonight and you have to luv they way they press. VS is really the best offensive player in my view we have ever had in modern history may not have all the numbers but man can he push and expand the O Zone and get the D back on their skates, I would still skate him with Dongara though, I guess that's not going to happen but you have to admit VS stick handles like a beast.

i saw the play pretty clearly. Personally I don't think that he should have been tossed but i can see why. He hit the vermont player in the head while he was already down on the ice. Not necessary. just a DUMB move and he definitely deserved the penalty on that.

GREAT WEEKEND Overall!!

He didn't hit him in the head, he shoved him in the upper arm.

The 8th grader is Cam Askew, from St. Sebastian's and South Boston. St. Seb's has a few young players that have drawn attention. Another young player, Noah Hanafin, has committed to BC. Both are '97 birthdates.

He is the best of the 96 and 97 litter for this region by a good margin.. Already about 6'3" and growing. Probably will go to natl team. Very rare for a kid growing that much each year to dominate and be that good. Sees the ice as well as anyone, off the charts in the hands catagory. I would expect major junior as well to be all over him.
BC and BU choked here.....

Happy Thanksgiving all.. Go Huskies :)

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

hoky, PP - thanks for the info on askew. let's see if he makes it to NU, a lot can happen in 5 years

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

a) Who cares about middle schoolers committing? 5 years - I mean it's completely pointless almost, teens change their minds on a dime.

b) Big weekend.

c) Dog House has shown up all season despite the losses. Great stuff. Packed on both sides again.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

I saw head contact... but either way he was already down on the ice and the second shove was unnecessary.

I am 99.9% sure there was no head contact but that was a hell of an acting job by UVM. It was a penalty but a misconduct was a joke...at best.
