Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

I should have just said nothing, but what I'm hearing is that this is no minor problem for the coaching staff. I will leave it at that and let someone else report what happens.

That's fine, better to have less unsourced hearsay on here anyways.

I will asure you that I did not hear this from someone's girlfriend's brother's electrician. I heard it from a very reliable source, but I do not want to make anyone all upset as I know some people are very touchy about information without "links." I happen to like hearing and watching shows where they report info for college football and I wish there was more media attention and more inside info for college hockey.

Agreed. Like you said, it can get annoying when everyone starts posting things "they heard" on here, though I believe you've been correct on other information you've reported on here, so I have no reason to not believe you. I was suspicious when they suspended him so quickly, usually that kind of thing isn't done unless they know something's really wrong and won't end with a slap on the wrist.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

What gets hairy is how far back did this go, did any improperly contacted players come to NU and play in any games, etc. If that turns out to be true, the program's got some big problems up to and including forfeiture of games...

I don't think this is accurate. Forfeiture of games only arises as a penalty when the eligibility of players is in question, and improper contact during recruiting doesn't do that.

That's not to say that there wouldn't be serious penalties. Things like loss of scholarships, recruiting restrictions, TV bans, and postseason bans remain part of the enforcement arsenal. I wouldn't think that the latter two would come into play in a case of improper contact (even with the school already on probation for basketball), but I wouldn't think either of the first two penalties would be a surprise.

The NCAA has been known to rule erratically. Shocker. I would not put it past them to rule that improperly recruited players are/were ineligible, depending on the circumstances. One of the things that helped UConn's basketball program in their recent run in with the NCAA for similar conduct was that the recruited player in question never ended up suiting for any game. It seems unlikely that game forfeitures would occur here, but nothing is out of the realm of possibility with respect to the NCAA if those guys suited and played.

They use the discretion given them by the rules erratically, but they don't depart from those rules.

The only circumstance that I could foresee leading to ineligibility is improper benefits. That would threaten a player's amateur status. Contact during recruiting alone will get the program and coaching staff in a lot of trouble but will not lead to punishment that hits the players directly.

I know exactly what you mean with this. I spoke with someone in the hockey department and got his opinion about the situation and this person thinks that NU is over reacting to avoid further major sanctions. This is only that persons opinion, and with the AD very tight lipped on the situation, no one wants to say anything. I won't say any names either because I wouldn't want to possibly get this person in trouble for having said anything (even though they didn't actually SAY anything). Until NU comes out and says that these are their findings and this is what they are proposing to the NC$$ as sanctions, no one will know for sure.

que sera sera.. all that stuff, let the facts come out.. lets not shoot first..

Talking about this wknd - would love to get 3 pts. I think we had a shot at 3, even with UNH.. big breakdown in discipline & not goalie's best effort. I think he will bounce back.

We did not play particularly well at home, up until Jan.. since then, 5-3-1 at Matthews, still work to be done. However, our best play coming against local teams (Harvard, BC, even Mack) gms have been decent effort. Need more than good effort as this is a team we might see more than twice.

Hoping for a 'W' at home.. we should have sealed the last one at Agganis, but that is history.

Sat will be interesting.. Vermont came back from being down 3-0 to them last wknd. We need to get some momentum going into the playoffs no matter who the opponent then.. If Rawlings can step up this wknd, I like our chances.
Go Huskies! :)

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

..like to add, the other part being disciplined skating.. Sebastian LaPlante has been doing a fairly good job of stressing 5x5 skating. Save for Eibler's breakdown in the UNH gm (to me the turning point with that 5x3), .. i think the team overall has done a better job with taking unnecessary penalties. We'll need that this wknd. Gotta get that first one Friday. Go NU :)

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

I'll take any of them.. i still think we have unfinished business with 'Mack. That last OT gm with 28 odd secs left.. we should have put that one away in regulation, least held on.

On the other hand you have the proximity & chance to see 2 or 3 hard fought gms, just a T ride away for most students..

Well, since we're not at home.. who cares.. just enjoy the hockey. Go team! :)

BU because if you guys go to a game 3 I'd be able to go after BC sweeps

So do we want BU or Merrimack for the playoffs?

Well BU would be easier to get to, MC would be significantly cheaper for those who could make it.

Not sure who is a better matchup for NU, but playing BU would mean BU took at least as many points from NU as MC took from PC, which probably wouldn't be a good sign for NU's quality of play heading into the playoffs.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

I think Merrimack had been a better, more impressive team during the regular season but I would probably prefer to play them in the playoffs. For the first time in a long time, Merrimack is expected to at least make it to the Garden. I think they will have some nerves there that they are not accustomed to. In 2008-2009, NU was in a similar situation and just sneaked by a UMass team that was not as good as this year's Huskies.

Either way, we will go into either series as an underdog but I wouldn't be shocked if we got to the Garden and I would at least expect the series to go 3 games.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

the mack for the same reasons thiessen'sbetter said, the mack has pressure to perform and look at our record against bu for the past 5 years...oy. i think us and bu are very similar this year talent wise, but they just find a way to win the close ones against us... maybe because:

http://iplextra.indiatimes.com/photo/06k96fD8CU6f5?q=Jack+Parker

You act like he is the only coach in the country who argues calls...Cronin is just calmer because he is busy texting recruits during the games so he doesn't have as much time to yell at the refs haha. In all seriousness, I think Merrimack will feel pressure come playoff time and I think the beginning of that was seen last weekend up in Maine so yeah you want Merrimack over BU but I want you guys over Maine the way they re playing right now.

Yeah, Sneddon did his share last weekend (and i didn't even see the half of it probably since I was only watching it on TV. Parker's just an easier target for that accusation since he's more, well, boisterous and he gets a lot more attention than most any other college coach in the country. (Not opening up the "he's best" can of worms, just that York et al. fly under the radar a little more)

Hey NU folks!

Wanted to pick up a few extras for tomorrow/today's game and was wondering, assuming the game's not sold out, where that'd be located tomorrow... Are tickets still at the building on the campus or does box office move to Matthews for the day of?

I believe in that building in one of the quads near the arena until 3:00 ish unless it has changed from a few years ago.
