Northeastern Huskies 2009-10

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2009-10

Livinhocky- I couldn't agree with you more about the small forward from UVM. I do disagree with your statement about a a lack of a shot though, granted she does not have a booming slap shot but she seemed to be the only one that knew how to put a wrister on the goalie for a rebound. I have watched this particular player in Prep school and with the Polar Bears and she is extremely gifted down low and in tight spaces creating chances for other teammates. It seems as though the Team lacks a knowledge of puck support and movement which creates few offense chances and many odd man rushes.

Just supports the idea of not putting her on the point. Being a parent of a def I once spoke to ***. coach of a peewee team who did that in an early season game and i said its up to you to develop that part of the def's game --otherwise put my kid as forward on power plays (Actually the next year my child played forward because they get tired of not being involved in the o part of game) I know a good coach knows how to cycle the d into the o flow. I even see them do it powerplay on our half of ice -- more often then not the teams get burned and down deep I love it.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2009-10

Excellent weekend sweep of Vermont!! I'm so excited by this start. I wouldn't be surprised if Brittany Esposito and Flo got HEA weekly awards on Monday.
Esposito, Schelling earn HEA awards

#9 in the USCHO poll this week, too. Exciting to see, but i'm not too excited because last season after our first ranking, the ship started to sink. Let's see if NU can keep this up (I think they can). The number at least looks good right now, as many athletes are about to sign NLIs.

No, you're absolutely right about accuracy vs. power. I'd rather have someone at the point who understands creating shooting lanes, putting the puck on net, and keeping it low so it finds its way through the bodies and gives teammates chances for deflections and rebounds. I guess my issue is more the idea that this forward's hands could be better put to use down low in tight spaces, and the defensives liability when the puck is turned over has already burned the team more than once. Basically, put your personnel where they are setup to succeed, not fail. And there are D's on the team that understand when to unleash the cannon and when to get a quick wrister off while the lane is there.

I haven't seen the person in question play, but I suspect that if she has good hands the reasoning behind having her on the point is so she can quarterback the powerplay. Generally the object is to move the puck from high to low and then work it into the middle, not to blast away from the point. It may just be that they were lacking someone who could deftly distribute the puck from the point, and the defensive liability was worth the risk for the offensive gain.

Well, that's true "to an extent". But this whole "Quarterbacking the PP" is a little overused in some cases. Some PP's look to work the puck down low and create chances from there, moving it to the points only if the PK collapses to take away the front of the net. Others, like the "Umbrella", look to have the puck controlled at one point, with wings in each slot and bodies in front disrupting the goalie. In UVM's case, it seems to be the former, and in my opinion this F is being wasted up top, and unfortunately, really being burned defensively when they lose possession, which has happened alot against the good teams. Against NU, it led to the worst case scenario, when Esposito split the D and scored a shorty.

Huskies Roar out of the Gate

Florence Schelling
Northeastern
Northeastern is not winning games by goalie Florence Schelling alone, though she is an awful nice last line of defense.

One month into the season, and perhaps no team has been as pleasant a surprise as the Huskies, who bring a 7-1-1 record into this weekend’s play, are ranked No. 9 and are one of just two unbeatens in Hockey East.

Schelling has backstopped the fast start, showing the form she flashed at times a year ago. Her 0.74 goals-against average and .970 save percentage lead Division 1.

“The goaltending is an absolute critical factor,” said Northeastern co-coach Lauren McAuliffe, who is sharing bench duties with Linda Lundrigan (Melrose, Mass.) as head coach Dave Flint (Merrimack, N.H.) spends the year with the U.S. national team. “But we’re putting more goals in the net than last year. That was a focus of our recruiting.”

It’s been players like senior Lindsay Berman, a career 15-goal scorer coming into the season who has four already – three of them game-winners – and a team-high nine points who’ve stepped up their play.

“That’s just huge,” said McAuliffe. “To have (nine) games and one player with three game-winners is pretty clutch.”

Veterans Kristi Kehoe and Alyssa Wohlfeiler have picked up where they left off, and freshmen Brittany Esposito and Casey Pickett (Wilmington, Mass.) had added scoring punch.

With Flint on sabbatical, the Huskies figured to go through some growing pains behind the bench. But with Lundrigan overseeing the defense, McAuliffe managing the forwards and new assistant Nicole Stock handling the goalies, the coaching transition has been a smooth one.

“What Dave did last year is really having an impact on the team this year,” said McAuliffe. “He put standards in place, and what the girls did over the summer to meet those standards is what’s put us on this path.”

NEHJ Player of the Week

Florence Schelling, G, Northeastern

The sophomore from Switzerland faced 42 shots and stopped them all in back-to-back shutouts over Vermont. As a team the Huskies are yielding less than a goal per game.

Tomorrow is such a HUGE game. Providence has something to prove after their last outing, and NU isn't exactly used to being a winning team, though that is starting to change. If PC wins, they leapfrog us in the standings.

It is early in the season, but it's important to take points when we can in case we have another poor second half.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2009-10

The Huntington Hounds have another HUGE opportunity to pick up some HE points this week with two home games against Maine. Maine is no pushover, however niether is NU. This weekend NU can earn some respect and show just how legit they really are!

Regarding today's 1-0 loss to Maine:

When the Huskies pulled Schelling at the end of the game and sent out an extra attacker in an attempt to score the tying goal, why did they have their leading goal scorer sitting on the bench?

Just wondering.....

Pike,

I agree with your "Wondering." IMHO the "Interim Co-Coaches" have shown their collective lack of experience with making a number of suspect decisions, such as the one identified by you. Additionally, I noticed that it appears as if the "Rookie" Co-Coaches used an all important "Hockey East" Conference Double Header Weekend to "Experiment" with line-up changes. Even if there was an idea to tinker with the line-up that got them to 1st Place in Hockey East and the National 9th Place Ranking, why in the world would anyone except an inexperienced "Rookie" choose a conference game weekend to change it up??? Isn't that what non-conference games are for??? On top of that, why wouldn't the interim rookie coaches have pushed a little harder to have included their past two seasons goals and points scorer's on the "Sacrificial Lambs" team???

I guess it just goes to show us just how much they really do need Dave back!

Chippy I somewhat agree and take it a step further. It appears the coaching staff has decided to ditch the goalie platoon of last year. I can't complain with the results Schelling has produced. But is it a good idea not to play Sulyma at all? She's played ONE game. How is this going to be beneficial when Flo goes off the Olympics and a cold goalie goes in for two weeks. And it's not like she is a liability out there. The team is not risking a loss playing her rather than Schelling.

I'm not ready to throw the interim head coaches under the bus though. Yeah we lost to Maine, but our TWO losses this season (yes, only 2) have been 1-0 games. That's not exactly a crisis.

Pike, chippy and Bergey.....with all this said,it still makes no sense to have your leading goal scorer sitting on the bench.......it takes no brain surgeon to figure that out!!

I agree Reaper. That is a pretty common sense situation, no matter how much experience you have or don't have. I don't think she was injured, so I'm wondering what the reason was. Along those same lines, I noticed that same player was absent in the box score of the Providence game that they lost in a shootout. I would be interested to hear the reason for that.

Well... for the players sake as well as her team, lets hope this nonsense ceases and the rest of the season be a great,;) productive and positive experience!..
Let the best players play....

Well, teams practice shootouts/breakaways regularly, so maybe this particular player wasn't all that good in that type of situation.

I took the "absent in the box score" to mean "didn't play", not "didn't participate in the shootout."
