Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

Not too much to say about yesterday...was nice to see the continued success in the faceoff circle by the team (41 of 69), powerplay and PK worked well, but too much penalty kill action IMO. We would get eaten alive in Hockey East with 12 penalties, that MUST tighten up.

Great game by Roy, impressive showing by Szmatula/Benning/Hedges. Gotta finish the deal tonight, not sure if I'll be able to make it though.

Shouldn't be a problem if that's the only thing you're bringing in. They'll give you a hard time if it's in a backpack.

Thanks much for the answer one more question, how much is the sox game going to affect traffic coming up 93N from the South Shore, typically Sat. night games are a straight shot 1 hour no traffic, but i dont how how much the Sox will impact traffic esp. the ALCS,I'm thinking to add an 1/2 hour, should I act like it's a 2 hour Friday drive, sorry for being so inquisitive :-)

If you're dead set on seeing the opening faceoff, absolutely give yourself some extra time to get up here.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

Thoughts from Saturday night:

In a word, lackluster. The boys seemed very sluggish and lethargic. Passes were not crisp as they had been the two prior outings, the offense could not get ANYTHING set up or going most of the game. The PP seemed to regress to old NU levels until Cody put up a tally with a beautiful one-timer in the second period. That's one thing I want to see more of, Cody Ferriero shooting on the PP. That guy had quite a gift in his shot.

UAH came out tough and with a purpose. The would give up the body to block literally anything coming their way, pass, clear, shot, didn't matter. Total we had 37 SOG but we would have crept to near 50 had the shot blocking by UAH not been so stellar.

Another player of interest for me tonight was Tanner Pond. The 4th line C won 3 of 4 faceoffs, and was a constant presence on the forecheck when he was out there. He likes to hit people, I like the style of this kid's game. Sure it will bring PIMs but he's a great guy to have on the 4th line.

Speaking of PIMs, penalties were abound again, though there were some on both sides that I thought Miller and the rest of the zebras butchered. Still, 11 minors tonight, plus 12 Friday, I hope Madigan rips them a new one over this. Discipline MUST develop, and fast, if we are to be successful.

Lastly, congrats to Derick Roy for earning his first collegiate win. The kid loves the game, plays with a smile constantly on his face. As a fan you gotta love seeing that. Hats off to you, Derick!

Go NU!

Ferriero only gets that shot off because UAH was two men down. Our boys were doing a good job of frustrating shooters at the point 5x4.

I'm always happy to see the boys play y'all because of the xStream. It looks very nice from here in Alabama — I just wish that I were seeing blue jerseys with a win.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

No matter who the opponent, we can't complain too much about a 2-0 start after how this team closed out last season.

I totally agree that NU took way too many penalties, not just last night but Friday too. I didn't expect another 9-1 blowout on Saturday, but they could have taken control early on if they stayed out of the box. There's no reason to take so many offensive zone penalties. If they don't get control of that, Hockey East teams are going to make them pay.

On a more positive note, the freshmen look like they can live up to the hype. Szmatula and Benning are top notch and I think Stevens is better than advertised. He's still a bit raw, but tons of potential and on a team this young he'll have the opportunity to contribute right away. I'm still not sure what to think of the rest of the new guys or goalies but time will tell I guess.

Solid effort by UAH last night, especially after Friday's result. They played tight and drew a ton of calls, although some of that is on NU for getting careless out of their own zone. Best of luck the rest of the way unless they run into NU in South Bend next month :)

Stevens has been great to watch, always seems to be making things happen. I think Hedges has been a great find so far. Small sample size but the kid has shown good stick handling, aggressiveness on defense, as well as a nice quick shot. I also like how he has dominated the faceoff circle, that's something NU has not been able to do the last couple years. Dalen, Szmats, and Pimm could all prove to be quality faceoff men for us.

Trust me, it wasn't just frustrating to the shooters! You guys did a great job taking away the point shot, gotta give credit where it's due. Well done.

Evan Sporer takes a look at Derick Roy and the other two goaltenders vying for the starting job.

Thanks for the "heads up". If NU gets competent goaltending (and helpful defense), a large cloud hanging over the team will be lifted.

BTW the second UAH game was NOT really as close as the score would indicate. NU's intensity level certainly dropped late in the game, and they piled up five unneccesary penalties in the third period. The second UAH goal was scored with 4 seconds left in the game wihile UAH had a 6 on 3 power play.

UAH played a much stronger game Saturday and got very good goaltending. They will be more competitive this year, if they can stay healthy.

I disagree.the gm was close. Thankfully for us they did not have the snipers to get quality shot on net. Madigan's got to address the ridiculous penalties. Also, seemed our skating was bit off.. lots of players losing edges in key transitions all gm long.. unless it was something with the ice.

Now that you mention it, that's a kind of an odd tournament setup. No matter what happens, both NU and ND will end up facing a team they also play earlier or later in the season in the 3rd place or championship game. For NU, it's UAH or ND, for ND it's NU or WMU.

Let's be optimistic and look forward to meeting UAH in the final, after they pull a Sacred Heart/UML caliber upset in the first round.

I hate ND vs. NU games, but I'd rather see that than see ND lose to UAH.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

For what it's worth and if anybody cares, the powers that be totally butchered the Varsity Club. The entire ambiance of the place is gone, and it now looks cheap and generic. They removed the lounge area where they had some nice chairs, couch, coffee table, flat screen TV and nice fire place. Who's making the decisions around there?? It's not George Makris, he seems P*ssed about it as do many others that I spoke to. What the F....why can't we have nice things??

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

there are dinosaurs that run our hockey program.. (behind the scenes).. and that is why the program is in the shape that it is. think of it as an old company's 'legacy systems'.. yup.. from the concessions to the retail & everything in between.. we're full of that down on St Botolph st.
