Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

I won't be at the game, can someone scope out the Varsity Club and report back if there are any changes?

They did some construction over the summer and added a lot of new office space for coaches, athletics personnel, etc... They had to take away from the "living room" area of the varsity club to do so. There's a frosted glass partition in place now between the main area and the offices.

...can someone scope out the Varsity Club and report back if there are any changes? I've heard rumors that it will be open to the general public this year....

From what I've been told by a highly reliable source, that rumor can be confirmed. I'm also told the room will be smaller due to construction of additional coaches offices, which took away some floor space.

Hmm...that seems backwards to me. You'd think that if you opened the room to the general public that you'd either keep the room at its current size or expand it. As it is, it can get pretty crowded in there and takes way too long to get a beer sometimes. Typical i guess......

Didn't you know that "smaller and less exclusive" is a policy designed to make the room look fuller and more popular?

Who's in charge of this boneheaded decision making?.. Peter Roby..? JM?.. who?.. they seem to have 18th century mindset with everything hockey. Heck figure out how to fill the barn first.. 12 & under gratis baby!.. do it. :)

The room is used for a variety of gatherings. It seems that this was an Athletic Dept. scheme rather than one hatched by the hockey coaches m/f. I really don't know why this was deemed important. None of the coaches was being asked to work from the bleachers.

Huskies01 is a clown

Maybe, maybe not. But one thing that can't be denied is that he/she cares passionately about this program and folks like that are worth their weight in gold, whatever their opinions may be. If everyone who posts here had the same opinion about every question/controversy/issue, the rest of us would die of boredom.

So, Huskies01 and others, keep the posts coming.

Huskies01 is a "he". He is and has been a passionate fan for many years. His analysis is always interesting to read. I don't always agree with everything he puts out there, but his passion for NU Hockey can not be questioned.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

JM on the goalies: ""Healthy competition brings out the best in everyone. They've competed hard and all three will get a chance to play early in the year, and we'll see who emerges out of that group and start running with one or two of them.""

Sounds like we could be seeing more of a goalie-by-committee rather than one guy running away with the reins. I'm praying he gives Witt and Roy the most run, we know what Mountain can do. And it's not all that impressive.

Also some insight on what could be new with the defense this year: "'We're going to have a lot of focus this year in getting our defensemen up in the play to create some offensive opportunities, and the group has really embraced that through the first two weeks of preseason.'"

I agree that Mountain hasn't been that impressive. However he is, IMO, a D1 goalie if given reasonable support. Ken Dryden (am I dating myself?) would have had a 3+ GAA behind last year's D.

Fair point. My opinion is just, with the program not expected to do anything huge this year, why not see what you have for the future? Witt has one more year with us after this, and Roy will have 3. Maybe the answer to the goaltender problems is already here. Maybe not is equally as likely, but we won't now until we see them play.

I'm not blind to the fact that Dalhousie isnt the strongest opponent but nevertheless psyched with a win,the Freshman were killin it,so pumped for this year, very happy for Manson's captaincy :-) #GoNU (tip of the hat to Ryan Belonger-great game)

Any 'first look' summary from anyone in attendance would be appreciated. Go Huskies!

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

I went into tonight's game cautiously optimistic about the season. I left much more excited that I thought I'd be, I was very impressed by what I saw. First time in a long time I have seen NU put together a true complete game: Offense, defense, forechecking, penalty killing, PP, and goaltending all were clicking tonight. The D did a good job staying in passing lanes, giving up the body at times to block shots and passes, and putting hits on Dalhousie as they entered the offensive zone. Dalhousie had a total of 19 shots but not many good looks other than one that hit iron and one that Derick snagged. The only real negative was Nathan getting into a scrap that ended with both he and the instigator getting game DQs. Shame too, the Ferriero/Szmatula/Ferriero line looked sharp.

The tenders looked good, Witt started and saw the most action. None of them were challenged too hard, though Mountain (played Period 2) did give up more than a couple juicy rebounds than I'd prefer..

Offensively, this looked like a brand new team. The team came out guns blazing, flying around the rink, crisp tape-to-tape passes, one-timers getting on net, great forecheck that caused several turnovers. Goal-scoring opportunities happened early and often. Mike Szmatula was tenacious, he was everywhere on the ice. Looks as good as advertised. Him, Stevens, and Hedges all had very good offensive games- Hedges' stick handling and Stevens' playmaking ability were on display. NU dominated the faceoff circle, which was a new treat to see: the team was 42 of 65 for the game, led by Hedges at 13 of 16 and Stevens at 9 of 12. Also came away impressed by Tanner Pond and Zak Stone.

I know it was just an exhibition game, but after tonight it is hard to not be excited for Friday. The team looked great, and the Doghouse actually had standing room filled and had to send people over to the Donghouse so they could sit. Stoked that the season is finally here :D

Thank you for that recap!.. great to hear on the student section as well.
Far as goaltending.. soon as we play a HE opponent those questions will be answered as well. Anything over the last few yrs sounds good.

This pretty much says it all so no point repeating. The kids that especially caught my eye were Stevens and Hedges up front and Benning on D, although I have to emphasize what was said about Pond and Stone. I actually had to double check to satisfy myself that I was watching the same Stone who has been a fringe player, at best. It's hard to draw conclusions about the D and goalies since none of them were tested very much but I did see some quickness among the Dmen that was missing last year. Witt's body language suggested he was playing with confidence. He was squared up to the play all the time and played the clean breakaway about as well as it could be played. Finally, nobody (apparently) got hurt, which is more than we could say after the last few exhibitions.

We'll know a lot more after the next two weekends but, for now, there is reason to get beyond doom and gloom.

I didn't see the game but really Nathan? A GDQ in an exhibition game meaning he'll miss the season opener. No one ever did mistake the Ferriero's for brain surgeons...

It its own world, Dalhousie had been off to a decent start. We know something about injuries and they finished the game with 17 players. Also whoever scheduled this trip should be fired. Friday night they played a good Carlton team in Ottawa. Then they drove six hours or to Boston to play us. This morning They are out early so that they can play a 4:30 game at Maine. This must be Canadian Survivalist Training. If Maine doesn't put up 8-10 goals against this beat up team, they should start to rework their offense.

Otherwise, we saw a perfect example of first game adrenalin by the freshman. The passing was clever and creative at times. Stevens and his pals from Dubuque looked terrific. Hedges made his goal look easy and skipped the silly celebration (ala Victor Cruz). Let's hope Stevens like NU and flourishes here. as we are hoping to land his brother Nolan, who is a second/third line center on the US U-18 team.

This game meant more to the team and the marginal players than to anyone else. Still it sure beats losing to St.FX like we have the past two years. BTW,and FWIW, a healthier Dalhousie has already beaten the X-Men - who lost at bu 2-1 on a late goal last night

It happened at the far end, so I didn't see it all that well. But after a save and cover by the Dalhousie goalie, there was some shoving and one player went down on top of another. Nathan went to the heap and a couple punches, I only saw one swing land, leading to more chaos. In the end we got a minor and Nathan plus a Dalhousie guy was tossed. To his credit, Nathan came back out to the glass as soon as he left to watch. I liked seeing that rather than having him sulk in the locker room.

Does anyone have any insight as to why Gunn and McMurtry did not play last night?
