Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

What the **** is going on?!

We have been averaging FREE FRIES this year.

I'm so confused...

I think Uno's was paying the team to not score goals last year. This year, they are not doing that promotion anymore, of course.

Turning to the game, the Freshmen have been unbelievable thus far, especially Szmatula and Stevens. They seem to be all over the place and playing with an unexpected amount of confidence and composure.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

In attendance tonight and, with +50 shots on net, the score does not really tell, that, but for, perhaps a 5min span the 2nd, what a lop sided victory this was. NU skated circles around HC, and Roy looked like a 1st round NHL prospect and a Hobby Baker finalist for sure.

However, it was a team effort and the Freshman all contributed to the tune of 8 points! Not sure if HC is a quality opponent, but I will take 20 goals in 4 games against any competition. PP went 3 for 7 and it's on the PP that you will see how talented the new young guns really are, bullet like snap shots and bombs away slappers appear to be the norm, in what seemed like cycles in the offensive zone that lasted for a minute at a time, thus one thing seems certain, this team is likely going to be producing quality goals and some offence like we have not seen in several years.

The question, of course, will be, net minding, which was more than adequate tonight and D, especially D in transition.

Nice job tonight Huskies! Looking forward to progressively better opponents at Saint Lawrence and BC within the next 2 weeks. Although, 4 and 0 should have us ranked on Tuesday morning.

Great win tonight. It has been said already but the Freshmen have been dynamite. Szmatula and Stevens with their first collegiate tallies, tonight in addition to the fantastic play leading up to tonight. Benning has been great in his own end. One guy who I really like is Tanner Pond- he plays with an edge, not afraid to hit people and he is great as a 4th liner. Roy and Witt have done well in net so far, have to be pleased with the production there.

Very pleased so far, the next couple of weeks will really test and measure this team.

News from the recruiting trail as well: Northeastern received a commitment tonight from '98 F Shaun Bily.

I'll reserve judgement of the team until we've played a HE opponent.. actually the 2 away gms at St Lawrence will be a good enough test itself. Give me hope Joanna..Go Huskies

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

Picking up on the previous comment, I'm also not the type that jumps on the first bandwagon that rolls through town. But I've also seen things over the past three weekends that are starting to make the doom and gloom of the past couple of years start to dissipate. To start with, the much ballyhooed freshman class seems to be for real and OMG are they fun to watch. Szmatula, Stevens, and Hedges have especially caught my eye for their offensive skillsets, which means opposing coaches are going to have to pay some attention to NU forwards not named Roy. Then there's the PP which, by my count, already has eight goals--a far cry from the last two years. And the alignment with KRoy and CFerreiro (when he's behaving) on the points is something else that opponents are going to have to deal with. Benning catches my eye on D. He looks like a legit Div. 1 Dman so far and I'm looking forward to seeing him paired with Gunn (assuming he gets off IR sometime soon). Goaltending is hard to judge because there hasn't been any sustained severe pressure so far but, as someone over on DHD noted, at least no goals have been scored from the corners or the other side of the red line. Another pleasant surprise is the up-tempo/crash the net/put shots on goal style that seems to be a sea change from last year when IMO, they squandered way too many possessions because everyone was waiting for the "perfect" shot. I'll settle for putting up not-so-perfect shots then swooping in for the cheap rebounds.

Two concerns:

1) Experience. As impressive as the frosh have been, they're all on a learning curve and they're going to commit gaffes, some of which will hurt. But that's the nature of frosh and--assuming we can hold onto most of them--they should be a national force to be reckoned with not so far down the line.
2) Penalties. Especially the unnecessary variety that put the team two men down late in games with the outcome still on the line. And a misconduct/game misconduct late in the first HC game by someone who should know better is not my idea of senior leadership.

Yes, I know, it has been a cupcake schedule so far but this team has struggled against--and even lost to--marginal opponents too many times over the past few years. So I'll take 4-0-0 for what it's worth and wait to see how things go when the big boys come to town.

Def, and I've deleted them before. But when I got the double post and went in to delete the duplicate, nothing was happening when I hit the delete button. Best I could do was delete the duplicate text and apologize. Came back in about an hour later and the delete function went through to completion. Have no idea why the double post and delete fail happened in the first place but, as they say, stuff happens.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

Mike McMahon from CHN tweeted out a link to a recruiting blog that highlights the players on their watch list for the coming year. Northeastern had a handful of players on the list set to come in the next couple years. They were: James Winkler, F (2014 Class), Daniel Willett, D (2014), Lincoln Griffin, F (2015), and David Melaragni, D (2016)

Personally, I find these articles pooling together recruits very enjoyable to read. It's nice to see some of the players that will be joining and leading this program in the future get some recognition. Here is the link to the full page, if anyone is interested.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

This year's class is better than last year's fairly easily outside of Roy.

Through 4 games my sentiments (posted before opening night) are looking to be pretty accurate.

Nobody can use the "opponents" argument to knock down the success of the first 4 games. Lest we forget we won exactly 9 games last season. 9. And we only beat Huntsville by a combined 6-1 score. This time around, 12-2. We also got handled by Bentley last year, 6-3 so handling an Atlantic Hockey opponent is a step in the right direction. Now, this weekend is the first good test against a team with a Hobey Baker candidate on its roster twice on the road. I'd be happy with a split but Nov. 1 I think, on national TV vs. BC, is the date we are all looking towards. How will we look against a powerhouse that also features a freshman-filled lineup. In the meantime though, it's nice to see a team full of players that can consistently finish and make accurate passes tape to tape. Much more depth and creativity on this year's squad which many of us expected given the freshman class.

Projecting how next year's recruits will perform is extremely subjective. Projecting how the class of 1998 or 1999 will develop is hard enough for the professionals. That part of the site is as waste of time.

The site instantly lost credibility when the author referred to Daniel Willett as one of our recruits. He decommitted at least six months ago. How up-to-date are the other evaluations and projections?

I wasn't aware Willett decommitted, even though it seems like it's old news. My fault. Other than that the rest of it seems up-to-date. Winkler has drawn a lot of praise so far this year. Also the new committ, Shaun Bily, was highly regarded before his injury.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

I understand that he tweaked an old injury. Coaches are not taking any chances with it, but if all goes well, we'll see him again in November.

Disciplinary problem? I doubt it!
I wish I could see him playing this month and the news of his recovery came out.

To tell you the truth, I have a hunch that it was not a one-sided decommit, i*** you know what I mean. Mr. Willett has not yet bloomed into the offensive dynamo that he will need to be in order to compensate for his modest size (5'7"). That is very small for a D1 defenseman. He's in his second season at Lincoln. I had the imporession that he felt he should go IVY, but no one has snapped him up yet. We'll see.

The two recruits that the list failed to mention, and should have, are Jason Cotton at Kelowna in BC and Phillipe Gadoury at Nepean. Both of these players are leading good teams in PPG and should be joining us next fall.
