Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

I'm looking forward to seeing this freshman class come in and play. Reading your quotes and watching the interview he gave to HE at Media Day, Madigan seems to be quite excited for the new blood. Szmatula, after all the hubbub earlier this summer, will be fun to watch this season. Also looking forward to see ZAR, the Lincoln Stars blog was very high on him, saying he was ready for the college game.

Thanks for all the work you do, very well done!

He was high on last years class too, and outside of Roy it stunk. May Saucerman and Gunn can contribute going forward, but man, the Ontario dmen were lost causes, and I cannot remember any of the other forwards outside of the one kid who Madigan described as a power forward who managed 0 penalties on the year. High impact power forward that kid was.

When is a coach not high on his guys? ZAR maybe ready, but for what? He sure did not light the lamp his 3 years prior to coming here, do we really need more defensive forwards? Szmats I am sure will be fun and one and done, based on him already being 21. So not really a building block, not to mention, how hard is he going to try when the season is in the dumpster, its not like he WANTS TO BE HERE! Hedges, all 5'7 of him (maybe) coming out of a league that gave us DD and Farrell on the back. So yeah, he lit it up, but if those guys are considered top dmen in that league, whats he going to do when faced with real competition? You got the one kid on the blue line the Bruins took in the middle rounds, and then a bunch of JAGS. (just another guy). Maybe baby Cody turns into something down the line, and Stevens to me is interesting in a possibly Chris Lynch (for you mid to late 90s guys) kinda way.

Like AC/DC said, its a long way to the top if you want to Rock'N Roll. I dont think JM can even get the band together, let alone put together a hit record. Going to be lots of pick your own sections night at the old barn this season.

There freshman, unless elite talent they are not going to light it up. That goes for everyone's freshman, you can't win we you are going to count on freshman as much as they are going to. There lack of skill in the junior and senior class is what will hurt this team. They are building. I haven't see any of these kids play, but this class was ranked #10 in the country. But I guess you know better.

a million thank yous for that idea! Obviously your years at NU have served you well.Fill the barn, its a simple but necessary solution! On a personal level working poor families like mine could share in the joys (and sorrows) of a great schools hockey team, as a dad of two im sad to say its impossible for me to take my family, I sent a letter to the school but that fell flat, one gentleman here (Midwest Sticks) got us tickets last year and I tip my hat to him and all the other guys here at the Northeastern portion of the forum for speaking the truth and with common sense, thank you for speaking up for the little guy! Great idea brother GoNU!

.

Both Gunn and Sauce were recovering from serious knee injuries. Sauce was probably carrying too much weight as a result of very limited off-season conditioning. He has spent the summer remedying that problem. In addition, he played hurt several times last season yet still appeared to be able to add a bit of offense. McMurty looked like a freshman for a prolonged period. Then, as he was starting to get the hang of it, he picked up a concussion at Maine on a really vicious hit. Belonger may lose his job if he doesn't improve. Theres's still hope for DArou and Fennell was a complete walkon.

Have you seen the freshmen play so that you can write them off before they even step on the ice? You may be certain that the coaches have seen each one play multiple times, They have spoken to their coaches. In some cases they have followed the players for several years before recruiting them. Have you? There are at least forwards with very positive histories as well as a couple of solid defensive prospects. Perhaps it would be a good idea to wait and watch them for at least one year before forming your opinion.

This year's class is better than last year's fairly easily outside of Roy.

I would love to have a player that can be as reliable in winning face-offs as Chris Lynch was. Besides for the uncertainty regarding goaltending, I am optimistic about this years team and am excited to see what the Freshmen can do.

Happy Husky, I would be happy to give you tickets to a couple of Saturday night games if you would like. I am going to the exhibition game this Saturday but I am traveling out of town next Saturday so I will not be able to be there for the second tilt against Alabama-Huntsville. If you're interested, let me know.

NU's first (preseason) opponent will come in already having played 5 gms.. don't really care about W-L in this one.. just hoping the team starts to gel some & get it going. Goaltending.. pls show up. :)

This could actually be a big plus for the team, going against an opponent that is already primed and has started rolling along may force our guys to kick it up a gear or two. 4 more days. excited to finally get to Matthews and see some hockey action.

Unlike pre-season games in other sports, the Canadian colleges generally don't view these games as exhibitions and play to win. From that standpoint, we ought to be able to draw some valid, although preliminary, insights into what may be in store.

Lets keep our fingers crossed that nobody gets injured in this one. It's not worth it. I won't be at the game, can someone scope out the Varsity Club and report back if there are any changes? I've heard rumors that it will be open to the general public this year, and I havent recieved the usual pamphlet with the donation listing Varsity Club admittance as a benefit of giving. Thanks.

For sure, this is most important. Well put.

Does anyone have an opinion regarding what the opening lines will be? My thoughts:

Roy-Pimm-Ferriero
ZAR-Szmatula-Reid
Hedges-Stevens-McMurtry
Snydeman-Jamieson-N.Ferriero

Manson-Benning
Gunn-Sauce
Dax-Darou

Witt/Roy/Mountain

If I'm the oddsmaker, the opening line would be:

NU -150 Dalhousie +130

NU -1.5 goals +165 Dalhousie +1.5 goals -180

Total Goals O/U 5.5 -110

This is what you meant by opening lines right?
Shhh...don't tell Peter Roby that people bet on College Sports.....

I basically like your first two defense pairings. The third pairing will probably have Dax, but his partner might be a freshman

The forward lines might look like:

Roy-Szmatula-Cody One super line!

Reid-Stevens-Pimm

McMurtry-Stevens-N.Ferriero

ZAR-Hedges-Snydeman

Pond-Stone-Belonger - Lots of energy, few points

Note - I do this every year. In a good year I get one forward line and one D pair right. I'm keeping my day job.;)

Haha you and I both! I almost put Harms instead of DD, but figured JM would give Darou a chance to come in and win the job healthy after his injury at the start of last year. That super line would be awesome to see, could easily see that as our first PP line.

I'm most anxious to see Hedges and ZAR out of all the forwards. Hedges came from a very offense-heavy league, but was third overall in points. I haven't seen much film on him, but I'm hoping he could be a wild card, diamond-in-the-rough type player that we need. ZAR has gotten rave reviews after coming on strong the second half of last year for Lincoln. Their blog writer has said he's ready for college hockey, hoping he can be a nice scoring power forward for us.
