Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

I hope everyone has had a terrific Summer. It's now nearly Fall and we all have that so called “October Hope“, and rightfully so, as we have some great forwards, a bigger but perhaps untested D and a huge set of question marks between the pipes, as a result, I opted out of season tickets this year, for the first time in 25 years and I didn't write any checks to the program.

NU is now a top 50 national university and I don't think the hockey program, or it's success is even on the current Administration's radar.

So be it!

Many of us in the now perhaps 40 to 60 age range, that has historically consisted of many friends, prior administrators, past business associates and some alumni have begun to disconnect form the university to some extent, former players and boosters, etc. many are in a holding pattern I suppose, and we suspect and sincerely hope that the generally brighter and thus someday perhaps more deep pocketed alumni of the past decade or so will step up and make the contributions needed to both guide and support the program in the future.

However, my straw-poll at a recent business and engineering alumni network meeting/golf outing held this past week in Wayland, it would seem my sentiments above, are perhaps shared by many, as for several mentioned that they neither support the new era NU, it's administration or it's politics and thus writing checks to support the program would be nearly and act of treason. To my credit I did give nicely to the Robert Cord Endowed Book Fund and The NU General Fund, I am just not earmarking anything for hockey anymore as I see it as waste of money.

I now have grown kids at UMASS-Amherst and Harvard, both playing sports and soon a hockey player son at Babson, GO BEAVERS! thus many hockey viewing options are available, so I will pick up a few individual game seats and see what happens. I don’t have any big expectations for the program anymore and will always be in house at my position in the old barn, the best venue with the greatest fans for all the BU and BC games, but for me I am just kind of have lost the passion for them, it is what it is. For me, > a quarter century of unwavering support have finally given way to acquiescent indifference. I wish them luck, and I do all of you.

Best wishes, for a safe, successful and terrific season filled with highlight reel goals, great saves and tenacious D.

Regards,
Rossi

Figured some NU fans might be interested in seeing what Jim Madigan told me yesterday on some of the freshmen forwards.

I'm looking forward to seeing this freshman class come in and play. Reading your quotes and watching the interview he gave to HE at Media Day, Madigan seems to be quite excited for the new blood. Szmatula, after all the hubbub earlier this summer, will be fun to watch this season. Also looking forward to see ZAR, the Lincoln Stars blog was very high on him, saying he was ready for the college game.

Thanks for all the work you do, very well done!

I do not renew season tickets this year but has nothing to do with anything that any of you mentioned. I made it to 1 game last year, even though $390 for 2 center ice tickets is a steal, only making 1 game doesn't add up. I have three children under 3 so time plus money not really there. I will be back next year. I think this team will be better than some think. The team is on the rise.

Where did you find that interview. I'd like to listen to it. Thanks

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

Rye,
Have you had a chance to speak with Philly Mantella recently? Also, anyone know what if anything is new this year with the Varsity Club? I've only heard vague rumors.

No, I haven't. I've retired from most of the boards I was on at the U. and don't spend as much time there as I once did. We have a very pleasant relationship, and I know I can call her if I have something really important to discuss. I can't keep calling to tell her my thoughts on the HA. We've already covered that topic thoroughly:(

As for the Varsity Club, I have not been apprised of any changes. Of course if there are changes that do not affect me, I might not have been notified.

..even though $390 for 2 center ice tickets is a steal..

no kidding.. that's for entire season!.. as a crazy reference.. just 1 Bruins gm.. decent seats somewhere near ctr ice, hot dogs, couple beers, parking below.. not including a tshirt, or small keepsake.. I've topped that in one night .. couple times last yr. (that's per person).. there was 3 of us..! Thankfully I get to expense part of it..

College hockey.. where one gets to watch some amazing skaters (home or opponent') & hopefully catch early glimpse of rising stars of the gm at various levels.. what a deal! Madigan.. this your last chance.. make something out of the lot!..
:)

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

OK, enough of the negativity; I have decided to be positive.
Clay Witt is what NU hockey is all about. He has reported in excellent playing condition and has regained his skills. Josh Manson is going to play in the NHL and Adam Reid will have a break out year with 15 or more goals. We will have a great start to season. (2 games against the games worst Division 1 team). I am sure that the coaches will use all the negative comments to motivate the players. We will finish no lower than 6th. Of course our AD will take credit for rebuilding the hockey program and then resign to take a job with the NCAA or the Federal Government: but before exits he will suspend Clay Witt from post season play because he signed autographs for alumni.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

I'm not close enough to the program to presume to make predictions so I will not be the voice of doom nor will I be selling tickets for any bandwagons. But for the sake of the pride and sanity of all who care about the direction and success of this program, I hope to my core that the optimists are right about this team having the potential to surprise and that the pundits, prognosticators, and Debbie Downers are left to ponder which wines pair with crow. The alternative is unthinkable.

We will know soon enough.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

OK, so I know I haven't posted on here in as long time but I am wondering if any one here could help me. I've been checking everywhere (eBay, gonu, and a bunch of random sites that we found via Google) looking for an NU hockey jersey for my 2 year old daughter with no success. Any ideas? Also it can't be pink. I'm not raising a pink hat. Thanks.

Call the school 's bookstore or check Hockey East Online. Dan Parkhurst does a great job with the store on there.

Chickens,

There is an off chance that the bookstore may have something for a small child, but dont hold your breath. You're probably better off trying to get someone to manufacture a jersey for you. We're not exactly the cream of the crop in HE and I'm sure that Northeastern stuff isnt flying off anybody's shelves.

Let me look my daughter now a freshman at UMASS Amherst had one for many years, I know we didn't throw it away. It's likely in the attic, I will look if I have one I will send it to you, as I suspect her kids will, sadly be wearing Minuteman jersey's.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

First batch of tickets came in the mail today. Looking forward to seeing what the new recruits can do this season.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

Thanks for the advice. guessing from everywhere we've looked, I'm not holding my breath that we will find one.

When my daughter turned 4 i got her a youth sized one. Its was down to her knees, but after a few wears, washes/dryer plus growth, it fits better.
