Northeastern 2022-23: Unfinished Business - Great Expectations

Brutal only exciting moment was the penalty shot/save.

levi proves mortal and the rest of the team proves they can’t win a game without riding on his back. I’m not not looking forward to his departure. We lose a lot next year and some guys who I thought would be the next offensive leaders are not panning out.

That was pretty ugly and now even a deep run to the HE final seems unlikely. Levi looked kind of lost aside from the penalty shot and he didn't face many shots. Worst part is BU won HE regular season. Well I agree with OnePack, Levi is going to be gone next year and it does not look too good for us offensively. That said we had a strong 5 years or so but we really don't have much in the pipeline. It's been an enjoyable last few years generally. I think we are going to be rebuilding the next couple of seasons. So get ready for it the potential of being a very mediocre team once again. I have to say overall the team this year has been a disappointment. We haven't won an NCAA tournament game in 40 years. That is kind of what I think about when I think of the program. I don't know how you recruit top tallent with that statement a reality. Not sure when or if they make it to the next rung...

Best comment of the night came from the Lowell pxp guy who described NU's O-zone play as "aimless." Really, they never sustained anything in the attacking zone until they pulled Levi in desperation time. And, speaking of Levi, and with all due respect to everything he's done, he played like his body was in Lowell but his mind was in Buffalo.

Now it's win the tournament or go home.

That gurgling sound is the bottom of the bowl finally emptying. The team with the most potential in the history of the program going out like lambs.......to me its equally as frustrating right now as it was in December. No NCAA, No Richter. The Beanpot was a nice treat, but this team underachieved every step of the way. If there were three wins over really bad teams, we would be in about 8 or 9 in the PWR and anticipating what could be.........really disappointed.

Best possible QF matchup vs Providence. If they finished #2 they would have drawn BC, which I don't want to see in post-season unless necessary. Really, if this team can't take care of business vs PC, they don't deserve a Gahden Pahty.

Lol..total disappointment and it's only going to get worse. They really haven't accomplished anything and what's worse there really isn't anyone in the pipeline. I think it's a few seasons before they are mediocre. However the lady huskies destroyed Yale and I think the win NUs first national championship ever this year. See you in October. Have a great Summer.

Goodbye to a few great Huskies, but as a team they just couldn’t string anything together. I’m not sure where they go from here. On paper this was the team to make some waves and instead they puttered out middle of the season against the absolute bottom of the barrel. At every point they had the opportunity to make their own destiny. A few big wins in between then and now, but rarely did a full game get put together.

Coaches are going to have to put their heads down in the off season and figure out what’s not working.

In the mean time I’m very excited for the women. They played a great game against Yale and have been a ton of fun to watch.

I think, looking back, that this team was a little over rated and it was easy to buy into. With McDonough and Levi back, the expected development of Jack Hughes and the arrival of Cam Lund, there was a lot of promise there. Having to replace three of your best defensemen and not plugging in any game breaking forwards were issues that a deeper critique might have brought forth. That Holiday Horror stretch with your three best returning defensemen out injured (for the most part) meant that NU was dressing a full group of dmen that was not in your top six last year and/or were inexperienced freshmen. The most experienced player dressed on D was a guy that had already been through another program and wouldn't see the ice again when everybody was healthy. Rossi was the first among us to pick up on how flawed this team proved to be. Next year, three more freshmen defensemen and a freshman goalie have to be played. The forward group has to replace McDonoughs goals. I do a lot of reading but have not seen anything to explain Jack Hughes performance this year. Lund has to step up. Hryckowian is a tremendous player. I like Jack Williams and think he'll do well. Colangelo hasn't scored like I hoped he would. Fontaine is asked to do more than he should be. After them here are your returning forwards: McInnis, Outzen, Choupani and Messuri. I'm not sure if RHughes, Mella and Demelis are 5th year eligible or candidates. On D, Mc Donald was tremendous. Dorrington and Borgesi play different styles but were freshmen. Returning after them are: Doyle, Davenport, Furey and Gaudette. Not sure if Bucheler or Spott are 5th year eligible. There are 5 freshmen forwards, 3 freshmen defensemen and a freshman goalie coming in. A lot will be asked of them. This team will probably be in the bubble area between road/home game in the Hockey East first round next year. I'd be pleasantly surprised if they managed a first round bye. I'm interested to hear others takes.

I think, looking back, that this team was a little overrated and it was easy to buy into...

Personally, I always take the media polls with a grain of salt, but the coaches' poll has built-in credibility for the simple fact that, for the most part, they've been recruiting against each other for the same players and know them well. The HEA coaches' pre-season poll was as close to unanimous as it has ever been in picking NU as league champion.

The comment above about the injured defensemen during the holiday swoon is a valid point but that doesn't explain the post-Beanpot swoon nor the season-long struggle to put pucks in nets. And WRT the thread title, business wasn't finished and expectations not even close to being met.

Split-N, I couldn't agree more with you regarding the lack of scoring ability. I held back on getting too specific/harsh with individual players as that offends some that think it's not proper. There just wasn't enough offensive punch on this team, forward or defense. A defenseman that can run the PP from the point is a must. There are a couple of incoming freshmen they need to get contributions from sooner rather than later.

This has top be the most disappointing Husky season in its history. With the top 5 preseason ranking to not even make it to league semi's is a huge swing and miss. To have the best goalie in the country the last 2 seasons and not do more than they did is a swing and miss. This was the deepest D core they have ever had, I loved those 3 freshman D, Struble in an NHL D man and Bueclher and Spott was good senior players. This team should have been better with Levi and those 6 D. Scoring was a huge problem, what the hell happened to J Hughes? He was a non factor all year, didn't even notice him on the ice. Colangelo, I think its time to accept he is not a top tier player. I like Fontaine, he has a knack for the big moment. Lund will be a force, Williams is a good player. I liked the freshman, the issue layed with the senior class. Other than McD, no seniors steppe dup. DeMelis, R Hughes, nothing from them. I like DeMelis cause he can do other things, but we needed one of them to be like Schule was his senior year. Step up and get is double didget goals. I would consider Demilis on a 5th year, not R Hughes. One thing that has me concerned, I heard from a college hockey coach that the rumor on the street is that there are a lot of unhappy players on this team and the feeling is that the portal will be filled with NU players. He said he has no idea if this is true, just what they are hearing. That would be a big problem if true. I saw Gaudette is gone, that doesn't hurt. I'm hoping they do not lose any freshman.
