Northeast Regional: Miami, Merrimack, Notre Dame, UNH

Re: Northeast Regional: Miami, Merrimack, Notre Dame, UNH

Interesting thought/question... If you're amongst the thousands of Merrimack fans that will outnumber everyone else in the building Saturday, who are you rooting for in the first game? As a UNH fan I'm pulling for Merrimack in the 2nd game against Notre Dame, and hope that those that stick around will add to the excitement in game 2. I'm curious how the hoards of Merrimack fans, students especially, will turn out for the first game. Do they see UNH as a rival that they want to lose, or do they see them as a Hockey East team that they want to see succeed (as long as its not at their expense?)

If I could make it and was going to be one of those thousands of gold-clad fans, I would be rooting for UNH. We handled them on Saturday, and I honestly have no doubt that MC can beat them again, barring injury. Injury is the big question for MC. Wherefore Art Thou Collins, is Canatta ok, and will we see The Real Steph DaCosta or Post-Injury Steph DaCosta?

Re: Northeast Regional: Miami, Merrimack, Notre Dame, UNH

You guys don't need to worry about what side MC is shooting at because you wont score. Good luck Saturday night

Thanks for that insightful analysis. Cool how you managed to get negative rep within 7 posts, too! I at least had to run afoul of the mainers first.

Re: Northeast Regional: Miami, Merrimack, Notre Dame, UNH

My initial response was to somebody who I thought was a troll, and I was being sarcastic. Not sure about you guys, but the whole "Umiliated" theme gets a little old sometimes. When I responded to CBG it wasn't meant as a personal shot. If I came across that way then I apologize. I will say however that I am going to Manchester fully expecting UNH to win because they can beat anybody in the country if they play to their potential. If they do win I do not see it as an upset.

Btw, my little red dots come primarily from BC fans, because I do not kiss their rear ends like many of my fellow UNH fans do.

You'll never guess what is on ESPNU before hockey on Saturday. :D

On another BC board we were laughing about that as well. I think that game wasn't on ESPN3 either.

Pass the ball around (make no move towards the net), call a timeout (commercial), pass the ball around (still make no move towards the net), end of OT (commercial).

Hey Shawn...good to see you still posting on here after all these years...anyhow, I've been battling with this exact question all week long...I would like to see UNH win, but that would mean MC would have to beat UNH 4 out of 5 times to get to the biggest show in hockey, and that thought process scares me...maybe it's b/c UNH has always had our number and now I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop, but it's always tough to beat an opponent 4 out of 5.

As for wanting to face Miami, not sure that is a good approach either...with 3 of the top 5 (or maybe it's top 4) points leaders in the country, and the 5th best GAA of all goalies, that team scares me.

So, not sure who to root for...maybe I'll just go to the MC pre-game so I won't have to make a decision :) LOL...either way, I think if Merrimack plays like it did for the first 50 minutes of Saturday's title game, they can beat both UNH and Miami...especially if they can get their 2nd leading scorer in Barton back on the ice.

So, for now, I'll say GO UNH...GO MACK...but come Saturday, that could change...just how I feel right now.

I think you're just jealous because you don't have the same awesome dance moves. :D

Couple of years ago, they actually played the overtime of a regular season(i think) lacrosse game over the 1st round of the NCAA Tournament Hockey game. Seriously!?!?! I could not believe that crap!

On one hand, regular season game of sport that literally no one watches....
On the other hand, a tournament game leading to a national title.

ESPN's logic (or lack thereof) continues to astound.

Re: Northeast Regional: Miami, Merrimack, Notre Dame, UNH

I wasn't trying to equate Umile and MacDonald; I was simply trying to suggest the possible ascendency of Merrimack as reasons why there might be a more harsh light shed on the coaches of those two programs. It couldn't have pleased the leadership at UMass Lowell to see a fellow Merrimack Valley school nine miles away suddenly 'Get Good.' But I sense that IF Merrimack outlasts UNH in Manchester (either beats them outright, or wins the first game while UNH loses theirs), the hue and cry for Umile's scalp will be more pointed than it's ever been.
Like it was in 2009 when UVM made the Frozen Four? Or UMass made the regional final in 2007 while UNH lost in the first round to Miami?

I understand what you're saying, but I just don't know that 1 year of success from Merrimack will have that much of an impact; if they sustain this level, that might be a factor. Things went from decent to nearly historically bad at UML pretty quickly, and the team had been up and down for Blaise's entire run there. I don't think the situations are all that similar. Now, if Merrimack wins a title this year, you might be right, but I think it would take a few seasons of Merrimack being a national power to have the effect you're prediciting.

No idea, but Merrimack is holding a pregame party at Radisson Hotel Saturday at 4:30 p.m., so that should cut down on the attendance of MC fans for the first game.

Why schedule the pregame party during the early game? Schools do this at the Hockey East tourney, as well, and it baffles me there, as well.

So, on paper, disregarding recent trends in performance and overall stats, you think UNH is the better team?

Re: Northeast Regional: Miami, Merrimack, Notre Dame, UNH

Miami 22.9
UND 23.8
Union 24.9
Notre Dame 26.0
Western 26.6
Yale 26.7
Duluth 27.3
UNO 27.8
MC 28.1
BC 28.4
CC 29.1
RPI 29.2
Denver 29.4
Air Force 30.3
UNH 31.9
Michigan 33.5

Shot allowed per game.

With Miami it isn't just that their goalies are good but you just don't get shots.

Also I found it interesting that each of the top 4 is separated by about 1 shot per game from the one above, the bottom 2 are 1.6. Basically UNH's and Michigan's goalies are the hardest working pair coming into the tournament (the D in front of them sucks the most).

I think Miami is a very good team. And I think UNH can beat them. The players do not use recent trends in performance and overall stats during the game. They go out and play.

And hopefully they beat 2 good teams for the first time in 4 months!

Re: Northeast Regional: Miami, Merrimack, Notre Dame, UNH

"Merrimack is the difference," Sheehan said. "They're certainly bringing a lot of fans."

Arena general manager Tim Bechert said Merrimack rented the arena's two open suites. The college will have upwards of five buses to carry students and fans to the games and could have a turnout similar to the one that took over Boston Garden for the team's run to the championship game of the Hockey East tournament last week.
Will UNH be doing the same?

Also, good to see ND will be sending out a band.

I don't necessarily agree that you go straight by the numbers either to determine an upset. If you look at the Hockey East tourney, you had UNH (2) play Merrimack (4), if those same two teams play Sunday, it'll be Merrimack (2) against UNH (4). Anyone who knew the two teams knew that Merrimack was/is a better team than UNH and it certainly wasn't an upset when they won last Friday.
I know Merrimack was 7 in the polls while UNH was 10, I believe MC was also higher in the pairwise too but I don't have the numbers in front of me.

Are mack fans assuming their just going to skate by ND? Give me a break I know you guys are finally winning and have finally made it to the NCAA's but you should be concerned about getting by ND before looking ahead to see who your going to face.

Of course not. It's walking distance.

Merrimack was 6th in pairwise, UNH 13.
