North Dakota at UNO - 1-30/1-31 - The biggest series in UNO program history

Re: North Dakota at UNO - 1-30/1-31 - The biggest series in UNO program history

North Dakota is flying to Omaha (a charter flight!), for the 1st time, instead of taking a bus down here:

http://www.grandforksherald.com/spo...mens-hockey-und-chooses-different-route-omaha

Like what happened last year or the year before that is any real bellwether for anything, now, or, in the future.

I think we can all make some educated guesses about North Dakota motivations here and why they are really willing to go to this giant extra expense.

Assuming there are only 40 or so people in the travel party (a big if), you are looking at upwards of 20 grand to do this on some small turboprop style aircraft (which I doubt since a hockey team's gear would likely not fit in it unless the gear itself is being sent by bus, or something) or maybe as much as 60 grand if the travel party is large enough and a commercial jet is needed.

As opposed to chartering a bus (that would hold upwards of 50 people) at a cost of under, at most, 3 grand per day. And, that number gets you a nice bus.

Great read-between-the-lines article here. LOL.

It warms my heart to know you are so concerned about the UND Hockey team's budget.

FYI a lot of times they will have a separate bus meet the team in the city they charter to but yes, sometimes the big bad goons of North Dakota charter a plane for road trips, the horror!

Uhh, they don't want to take the chance of getting stranded or getting a bunch of people sick again?

So UND can have a football, men's & women's hockey team AND still afford to travel in style. Well look on the bright side Inferior Mav fans, at least UNO can afford to do one of those things. That's above the Mendozza Line!

You believe that is the real reason? Because I sure don't. I think this has more to do with Dave Hakstol and his minions looking at how ND has fared on Friday nights so far this season (all 5 of their losses PLUS a shootout loss to you know who) and concerns about showing up fresh, and, oh, just maybe being at least just a little bit concerned about who they are playing, where, in what environment, the Head Coach on the other bench, and, most important of all, the import of these games.

Yeah, I know North Dakota is tough as nails and used to playing good teams in front of big crowds. Well, we'll see if that is the case because that is what they are going to have to come here and do if they want to walk out of here in first place. It is one thing to have a large, intimidating, and full place to play every home game and quite another when you are you facing the same thing on enemy turf in a very meaningful series (how "full" the building here is going to be this weekend remains to be seen--rest assured these will be the largest crowds of the season, to-date) and you have to take a long and tiring bus ride to get there. I think these games will be played in an atmosphere like few others I can think of in the history of the UNO program. Maybe NO other. The fact that all these UNO fans have come out of the woodwork here this week, in this forum, all of a sudden, tells me something about that.

If they wanted to fly, they sure could have done this much cheaper, commercially (and that would have had to have been arranged quite some time ago). That they are willing to go to the expense of doing it by charter smacks loudly of it being a last minute decision. Hockey teams flying charter? I'd sure welcome some discourse from other teams fans about the prevalence of this (read: lack thereof) at their schools.

It is unusual enough that North Dakota papers all over the state are running this story.

"We're worried about the weather or about getting sick"

Yeah, right. If THAT statement is really true then I am thinking of a word. And, that word is "soft".

Yeah, right. If THAT statement is really true then I am thinking of a word. And, that word is "soft".

I'm pretty sure they've chartered to at least 2 or 3 road series already this year. That being said, I don't quite understand the point of your long-winded diatribe. Was it to point out that you won a shootout against us? We have more resources to commit to hockey then UNO? That we're somehow soft because we can afford to fly?

Please, arrive at the point. If there's not one, please inform us so I can go back to assuming you're just bitter.

We definitely should have chartered to that shellacking by Bemidji State.

I have no idea whether North Dakota chartered to other games this season, and it sounds like you don't either. This situation is unusual enough that papers all over the State of North Dakota ran this story.

Bitter? About what? And, what on Earth does UNO's shootout win have to do with my post, other than the anecdotal reference to it that was apropos to North Dakota's Friday night woes?

And, if you don't understand where I was going with my post, then, I am sorry, I can't help you. I don't teach remedial reading comprehension.

Repost of my post in the stickied thread about free streaming games online:

If you don't have FOX College Sports and want to see North Dakota @ UNO this Saturday night, 1-31-15, Nebraska Public Television is airing this statewide in Nebraska and they stream these games, freebie, live on their web site as well.

Here is the link:

It's a great hi-def feed, too.

Unusual in the sense that North Dakota does not normally charter flights to Omaha. The Sioux have been on 2 chartered flights thus far this season (@ CC and @ Denver). There will be 2 more chartered flights (@ Western and @ Miami) at minimum the rest of the season. In past seasons, North Dakota has routinely chartered a handful of flights each season. It's an extremely common practice in the program. If you want to call the team "soft" because of that, go for it. You just look like you have no clue what you are talking about when you do so.

That being said, I think a split is the most likely result this weekend, although I would gladly take winning 4 of the 6 available points again.

The old "if you don't know then I'm not telling you" game. That was always fun to play as a child :)

I am more of an Occam's razor guy. The easiest explanation is usually the correct one.

Poor play on friday nights: there is no guarantee they will play better because they are flying in.

Showing up fresh: coming off a series against the worst team in the league.

Being concerned about who they are playing: HAHAHAHAHA, hold on a second, HAHAHAA. You were serious? Dave Hakstol is worried about playing UNO, of all schools?

In the cauldron known as Centurylink Center: OK, seriously now, quit joking around I am going to pee myself.

The head coach on the other bench: Dean Blais left North Dakota, like, 10 years ago. This isn't a big deal anymore.

The import of these games: North Dakota has plenty of conference titles. This isn't as big a deal for them as it is for UNO. I think the fake Mavs will get their best shot, but this would be the 16th conference title for North Dakota. So the no-namers aren't going to be glorified if they win.

Since when do you give us credit for doing any of those things? What has happened to you?

I guess I was under the impression that UNO did have a men's hockey team. Since you know the Inferior Mavs better than I, I'll defer to your claim that no such team exists. This does make it strange that UND chartered a flight to Omaha today though. Guess they just wanted to visit the zoo.

If you have the resources, go for it as far as I'm concerned. If a team could afford to charter a flight every road series, I have to believe they would. Why wouldn't you?

I'd be surprised if UNO splits - UND comes through in the clutch. The only way UNO splits is if North Dakota comes in overlooking the Mavs - I just don't see that happening.

Re: North Dakota at UNO - 1-30/1-31 - The biggest series in UNO program history

Looking forward to this series and the CenturyLink turning green. I would be happy with a split, although either team could potentially sweep. I know the ND fans are driving down, as the wind is howling and the temperature dropped 20 degrees.

Re: North Dakota at UNO - 1-30/1-31 - The biggest series in UNO program history

And that should scare UNO plenty. Also, we will be without both of our captains on Friday, possibly one on Saturday. Zombo will not be playing (injury) and O'Rourke will be sitting out his suspension. A Friday night victory for UNO is quite improbable.
