North Dakota at UNO - 1-30/1-31 - The biggest series in UNO program history

Sounds to me like someone is whining. Dude got tanked from behind. Give me a break. And North Dakota did not benefit from a crap call that gave them their second goal? Whatever.

It was a very entertaining game for sure.

Who said he didn't get cross checked? Ortega oversold it to make sure the call would be made. That's textbook embellishment. There is no doubt MacMillan deserved to go to the box.

Either way, MacMillan made a bone headed move. The game tomorrow is going to be pretty electric.

I'm not sure if he had a choice at that point, Ortega was setting up shop upfront. But you are right, not a smart penalty to take at that point being down a man. I agree. I imagine there will be at least 12,000 tomorrow maybe 13,000.

And you could tell there were a lot of casual hockey fans there. The place only got rocking when prompted by the scoreboard. You would think with three minutes left in the game being up one it would have been louder.

I look forward to going to a series in Omaha when the new rink is opened. Looked like a pretty good turnout on TV. Very noticeable when they'd do the UNO chant.

Looks like it'd be a very fun atmosphere.

Very entertaining game. Too bad a great comeback by UND went for nought due to a couple of untimely penalties. Wow, is it going to be great to have Stecher back once he's back to full speed. Just a different element back there for us.

Glad he's back...hopefully he gets to full speed quickly. Tonight's game will be a battle - one of our top defensemen (and captain), Brian O'Rourke returns after his suspension. Hoping the refs swallow their whistles a little more tonight. I don't think there was but maybe six minutes of 5 on 5 in the third period last night. And the linesmen were brutal as well.

And of course, in the only fashion that this series can end, there is projected blizzard conditions Sunday morning for those Sioux fans going back home. Be safe UND folks - maybe chartering that flight wasn't such a bad idea after all.

I figured with a Saturday game that there would be an increase in UND attendance for tonight's game. Wondering with the projected weather issues if that will leave some UND fans in Grand Forks?

Hopefully it is another good game. Last night's game had a tournament feel to it, and that is always a good thing for both squads. As for the officiating...I didn't see anything that was grossly unfair to either side. Certainly some calls could have been made that weren't, and the refs could have let some other stuff go. IMO, probably a wash, and the result was probably correct. I thought North Dakota outplayed Omaha for significant chunks of the game, but I thought Massa outplayed McIntyre. When that happens, and as often happens in the NCAA Tournament, the team with the better goalie wins.

North Dakota will come out strong tonight, and the Mavericks will likely have to play significantly better to get the W. Of course, if Omaha wins tonight, they will essentially clinch the Penrose...barring an epic meltdown in the final 8 games. Even if the Sioux win, UNO will still have the edge from a schedule standpoint (playing the bottom 4 teams, including series against Western and CC at home), to go along with what would be a 1 point edge. Either way, both of these teams have the ability to do some damage in the NCAA Tournament, and it will be fun watching how the next couple months unfold.

I very much agree that I don't think the officiating favored one team over the other. I just don't like seeing that many calls made when some of them could have been let go. I think North Dakota carried much of the play for a good chunk of the game. UNO has been doing that a lot lately, getting outplayed and still finding a way to win. I don't know if you can call this a rivalry, but these games are a lot of fun to watch.

Re: North Dakota at UNO - 1-30/1-31 - The biggest series in UNO program history

The game was great last night (great, playoff-type atmosphere--desired outcome) but that wasn't the overriding thing that was on my mind driving home last night.

Nope, the thing I was struck by is, when these two teams get together, some of the goofiest, unlikeliest sh*t I have ever seen at a hockey game seems to occur with some regularity.

UNO and North Dakota, after last night, have played 13 times, the first being in Omaha on 11-19-10.

In those 13 games we have witnessed the following:

1. A game in which the only goal that was scored in the entire game occurred with 2/10ths of a second remaining in the game.

2. A game in which 5 power play goals were scored in a single period by one team.

3. One home team taking the worst beating in it's current digs, ever, in the first game ever played in it by the visitor.

4. The first and only 6th attacker delayed penalty goal I have ever seen in a 5 on 3 situation.

5. The first outdoor game in the history of either program, played in appalling conditions, at which the home team's fans were outnumbered by the visiting team's fans.

6. A game in which penalties were assessed to both teams before the first puck was even dropped.

7. The only 5 on 3 situation I have ever seen during overtime.

Did I leave something out? That was just what I thought of off the top of my head. UNO has played more games (50) against Alaska than any other team in the history of our program. No way is there a list out of those 50 games that looks remotely like this one does.

It's almost like the moon is full every time we play these guys.

Saw some good and bad behavior last night. Bad, by one of our fans in the restroom between periods. There was a long line in there and there were obviously many ND fans in evidence in the restrooms, as in the arena. The guy in front of me had his two boys with him. When a stall opened up he loudly and overtly stopped his kid from using it because a ND fan had just used it, saying why. That led to some harsh words.

I did not sit in my own seats last night. I was able to obtain seats in the club section for this game back in December and we sat there, instead, and I gave my seats to a friend and his wife. We, being me, Mrs. Red Cows, along with her sister and brother-in-law. Seated two rows in front of us were 4 somewhat drunk, loud, and boisterous UND fans of college age that were purposely trying to "antagonize" (I am sure there is a better way to describe this, I just can't think if it at the moment) the UNO fans sitting around them. They really didn't do or say much that got my goat but they sure did other people sitting around us. This led to some pretty serious jawing back and forth between them and numerous people sitting around us for the entire game. I am a bit surprised that ushers did not get involved at some point. Just after the end of the game, a neat thing happened, though. I don't know if it instigated by these 4 guys or not but all these people that had been "at" each other the entire game in that area all ended up shaking hands in the aisle and these 4 guys were very conciliatory and effusive in their congratulations. I don't know if they were being disingenuous or not. Didn't sound or look like it to me and I thought it was pretty classy by all involved. Kumbaya.

Re: North Dakota at UNO - 1-30/1-31 - The biggest series in UNO program history

The Ticketmaster link to tonight's game contains the following admonition about tickets for tonight:

"Not many left"

http://www.ticketmaster.com/University-of-Nebraska-Omaha-Mavericks-tickets/artist/838151

That is an all time first for a UNO Hockey game on Ticketmaster and the CenturyLink Center is an NHL size (and quality) arena.

Creighton just lost to Georgetown at the CenturyLink Center and they are currently switching the arena back over for hockey. Terry Leahy, UNO's radio color man said during the post game show last night they aren't even going to bother putting any draping up at all for tonight's game. It won't be needed.

Hopefully, the weather won't scare anybody off. The streets are fine, now. Be more of an issue postgame, than pregame.

Glad to see Pattyn can keep his composure. Two roughing minors in the first 15 minutes. Nice work bro.

Re: North Dakota at UNO - 1-30/1-31 - The biggest series in UNO program history

And then he fittingly gets the go ahead goal in the third. Sounds about right.

Two very entertaining games...safe to say those two teams are pretty equal.
