NoDak @ Maine Oct 22 / 23

Re: NoDak @ Maine Oct 22 / 23

It seems to me that NoDak hasn't had quite as much top end talent up front the past few years and coincidentally enough they haven't made the FF during those same years. Maybe some of the younger guys will take that next step to the elite level this year, but I still don't believe they have a forward who has ever scored 40 points. Even when NoDak has slightly less talent than usual, they are obviously still better than most other teams; and in what I would consider a down year across the board in college hockey, they are certainly a top 5 team. Again, I am not trying to criticize your team, I just don't see it up front as being one of your stronger groups.

I guess 40 points is the magical "elite" level. By the end of the season I think we could have 6-7+ players hit that mark (Frattin, Gregoire, Hextall, Genoway, Forbort, Kristo, and Trupp are the prime candidates to hit that mark, with Nelson and Knight potentially hitting that mark as well). I suppose we'll have to agree to disagree, as I think this team is our most talented bunch since 2003-2004. At the end of the day, it really doesn't make too much of a difference now as neither of us know what any team will do. We can revisit the subject in March.

Good luck to BC this season, hopefully they don't crap the bed like they usually do the season after winning it all.

Re: NoDak @ Maine Oct 22 / 23

I think BC will be in pretty good shape this year vs some of those other post championship teams. In 2001/2002, we lost Gionta, Lephart, Allen, Scuderi and Clemm to graduation; Kolanos, Kobasew and Orpik to the pros (all of whom were 1st rd picks) and then lost multiple key players for long stretches due to injury. A real perfect storm if you will. The 2008/2009 team lost to the pros it's one real superstar player in Nathan Gerbe, who pretty much singlehandedly won them the 2008 FF, their captain, best D-Man and heart and soul of the team in Mike Brennan, some very good 2nd/3rd line types and then their goalie had to play the whole season with a torn hip muscle and it showed. Compare that to this year where they return three 50 pt forwards, and a couple more who could be pushing 50 this year, 6 of 7 D-Men and both goalies. And this is from a team that absolutely destroyed the competition in the FF. So again, I think we'll be ok. Next year could be very different story though.

Good luck to NoDak too! I have a funny feeling we'll be seeing each other down the road..

I think the Frozen Four last year was a bit flukey given the conditions. Saying that, BC SHOULD be a very good team this year and I would not be surprised if these two squads meet up in St. Paul.

Re: NoDak @ Maine Oct 22 / 23

I just saw this on the weekly wednesday update, but per Coach Hakstol, Maine will be coming out to North Dakota next year for a series, so glad to see this series continue again next year.

I didn't realize how crappy the Sioux forward group was until I read this thread.
Not a 60-pt elite scorer in the whole lot. :D

;)

And don't even mention how pathetic the Defensemen are this year. Couldn't stop a rush with shotguns ...

Nice pics..cant say I've ever seen thunderhole so violent....but, my wife gave her thumbs up tothe childrens museum in Bangor. I've never been there....she says the kids would luv it. Do they keep people away from the hole all the time now since someone was swept off the ledges awhile back?

they had the staircase down to the hole closed off the day we were there because of the swell from hurricane ivan, but i think it is open on typical days... they did have a couple of rangers there making sure people stayed on the high ground... it was crazy that day... my next door neighbor got battered last year when that rogue wave wiped everyone out... they were standing on dry land up high and just couldn't get back in time... water crashed up onto the loop road...

I said it on the first page, and people are finally starting to get it: This Sioux team has no finishers. There are a lot of great, utilitarian players, but Hakstol can't recruit scorers now, I guess.

Carlton comes off like an idiot, but he's right on this one.

Well it's all over... the EXPERTS have called this one so I guess this season is pretty much shot... ;)

I guess all the preseason picks are wrong then. Yeah, the Sioux will be lucky to finish 9th in the "just got tougher" WCHA and we all know it's rigged to get Minnesota in the Final 5 anyway!

be better off putting those little traffic cones out there. Actually, they should just put Dirty and Brent on a pair of skates. That would be better.

Re: NoDak @ Maine Oct 22 / 23

IMO, along with others, this is Hakstol's most talented team.

I'm not among them. I don't think it likely Hak will ever have a team as talented as the '06 team with Stafford, Zajac, Oshie, Toews, Chorney, Lee and Smaby, along with Chris Porter, 1st rd. pick Joe Finley and future Hobey winner Ryan Duncan.

Hey! Unlike Brent, I can skate. I will stab you in the eyeball with a pen.

The '06 team was very talented, but you have to remember that almost everyone you mentioned (Oshie, Toews, Chorney, Lee, Finley and Duncan) were freshman, and it wasn't until the end of the season (or at least the middle of the season) that we realized just how talented they were.

To be fair, you can't really judge a team until the season is over, let alone 5 games in, so perhaps I rushed to judgment a bit. Saying that, I think that when this season is over they'll be considered a more talented college hockey team than the '06 season. The '06 team only had 3 players with 40+ points (nobody over 50), and no one scored 25 or more goals. And I know that Wins-Losses aren't necessarily a statement of how talented a team is, but the '06 squad lost 16 games, the most of any Hakstol coached squad (29 wins were the most, while the .641 WP was 2nd).

Fortunately, North Dakota has had a lot of good teams, so this is a fun comparison. :)
