Re: NoDak @ Maine Oct 22 / 23
I'm surprised they didn't call it.
Team D and goaltending lost both games for UND. The officiating sucked but I'm finding that this is a common theme across DI hockey. That's why most of the NHL officials came from the Major Juniors, USHL, or overseas. The NHL doesn't see the NCAA as a viable development area for their officials.
So the NCAA is left with officials who are prone to league politics, situational officiating, personal grudges, questionable ethics, and overall poor performances. To be honest, the WCHA is full of officials who wouldn't last more than 2 games in the NHL. The officials this weekend were hockey east officials, true, but they wouldn't last 3 in the NHL.
My point is: The USHL is getting noticed a lot by the NHL because of the improvement of their officials and overall game play due to their dedication to USA Hockey and their rulebook and etc. The NCAA could win a lot of arguments even with the difference in number of games played with the Major Juniors if they consistently tried to model game play and the rule book after the NHL. Since, in my vision money is irrelevent, I'd also say that since there is standardization of the rulebook across all of DI, the need for WCHA, ECACHL, HEA, etc. officials would be eliminated. This means that all of the officials would be in a big pool and would be scheduled accordingly. There would not be conference specific officials. That way, no officials would be able to develop personal grudges or stereotypical playing patterns they dislike in specific teams because they'd officiate that team less often.
The NCAA doesn't offer the NHL style game play. Though it is still a viable developmental league for players, it is still far behind the curve in every other facet. I mean, you have great coaches in this league like George Gwozdecky, Enrico Blasi, Red Berenson, Dean Blais, Don Lucia, Jerry York, Jack Parker, etc. yet only a few of them got pro invites. Those who went either didn't last long or left soon after.
I don't know what the HEA politics are, but the WCHA is so poorly run it amazes me to see the WCHA do so well in the NCAAs year after year (even if they don't win it all).
