NMU Wildcats 2010-2011 Season Thread

Re: NMU Wildcats 2010-2011 Season Thread

I have confirmed that Chad left the team prior to the Saturday game against Ohio State. He left of his own accord, citing unhappiness with his ice time. With Chad leaving the program, it is unlikely that his brother will join the Cats. His commitment was a verbal. He had not signed his letter of intent. It wouldn't surprise me personally, if Chad and his brother both end up at Michigan Tech. That is my opinion, nothing confirmed. And, NMUFan, your information regarding Jake Baker is incorrect.

Glad to hear the info about Baker is in error. Just taking info from the NMU vs. LSSU thread on that.

Hopefully Walt has a couple of guys he's looking at to replace them. Isn't November the early signing period time frame?

Re: NMU Wildcats 2010-2011 Season Thread

I interviewed Dave Shyiak today for my radio show (BSU plays UAA). I had Dave as an instructor for "hockey" as my PE requirement back in '95-'96 at the PEIF rink, and I we were chatting about it before the interview. His response when I told him I took that class 15 years ago? "All that means is we're both getting old." :p

BTW, two weeks away (Thanksgiving weekend) - who's going to be in Bemidji for the series?

I was hoping too, but my work really slashed my hours so I dont think its in the cards for me.

Sad to hear about Chad, he played well during the limited time he saw, and I see why he is frustrated. But, it goes to show the trust Walt is putting into developing the younger players. Im not really sure where he plans on getting more ice time. If he transfers to Tech, or any other D-1 school he has to sit out a year. If he transfers to D-3 I understand there are no restrictions and he could play right away.

Re: NMU Wildcats 2010-2011 Season Thread

The situation with Chad seems like there are off the ice issues that are driving it... It just seems like a clash of personalities and the ice time issue is just the cover story... There is probably a lot here that we aren't seeing...

I would love to make it to Bemidji, but unfortunately I'm tied down with Black Friday commitments :mad::mad:

Why speculate about off ice issues. There are none. He just felt he wasn't getting enough ice time. From my seat, it looked like he got about what he earned. He didn't bring enough offensively to warrant 2nd line status, nor was he strong enough defensively to play on the 3rd line, which means you play on the 4th line or sit out. He played 34 games as a walk on freshman and had only sat out one game this season before he quit.

Re: NMU Wildcats 2010-2011 Season Thread

What I'm wondering is when will the suspension come down for this hit? They suspended Ray Kaunisto last year for a blind side, but clean hit after the game. That was also before the new rules stressing stricter enforcement of hits like this. If the CCHA doesn't want to look any more incompetent when it comes to officiating the kid should be sitting AT LEAST one game. In fact there's no reason to not give him a DQ in the first place. The kid hit ever area that the NCAA and CCHA said they were going to enforce with harsher penalties this year. Who taught that kid to play hockey Bertuzzi? Better yet not seeing a single NMU player step in and feed that kid a knuckle sandwich really makes me miss guys like Bateman, Oystrick, and Sidds.

Not saying it's Walt's fault, but one of a coach's duties is making sure team member's needs are met and managing egos. If this is a case of Chad simply whining about playing time, well then let him go, NMU is better off without cry babies. However, if this is a case where Walt or Junior promised him more ice time when recruiting him, then this falls squarley on the shoulders of the coaching staff.

I'll respectfully withhold condemnation of Walt on this issue until I investigate deeper and find out more details

Re: NMU Wildcats 2010-2011 Season Thread

Oh, you're going to investigate deeper. This should be interesting.

What are the chances that he talks to anyone like...say...a coach when he does his "investigation?" Because when you investigate, you look at all angles.

And how much investigation do you need? The kid comes in as a walk on freshman and plays 34 games. Then as a sophomore he plays in 5 of 6 games before quitting. Kyle Follmer is the only player of freshman or sophomore status who hasn't sat at least once this year.

The hits made on both Seckel and Cherniwchan deserve suspension. I would expect a ruling either today or tomorrow.

I'd just like to thank Walt, John, and Joe for teaching these boys that if they're struggling or being beaten to not take cheap shots. Seeing Bowling Green struggle then take their frustration out like they did, and some of the struggles Michigan Tech had last weekend (from what I've read) really shows how this coaching staff holds the guys accountable for their actions.

Take the 9-1 loss to MIA for example. After Miami went up 4-0, NMU (from the stats sheet) didn't goon it up and took just as many penalties as Miami did.

2nd Andrew Cherniwchan NMU 2 CROSS-CHECKING 01:11 PP
2nd CJ Ludwig NMU 2 HOOKING 05:02 PP
2nd Bryon Paulazzo MIA 2 INTERFERENCE 05:35
2nd Erik Spady NMU 2 HOOKING 08:59 PP
2nd Chad Pietila NMU 2 HOOKING 13:21 PP
2nd Bryon Paulazzo MIA 2 CHARGING 14:20
2nd Vincent LoVerde MIA 2 HOOKING 17:39 PP
3rd Greger Hanson NMU 2 INTERFERENCE 03:23 PP
3rd Justin Vaive MIA 2 HOLDING 08:37 PP
3rd Jared Brown NMU 2 SLASHING 18:27
3rd Steven Spinell MIA 2 CROSS-CHECKING 18:27
3rd Chris Wideman MIA 2 ROUGHING 19:03 PP

Very even. Unlike BGSU Saturday night:

1st Greger Hanson NMU 2 SLASHING 04:55 PP
1st Wallace, Andrew BGSU 2 HOLDING THE STICK 17:42 PP
1st Mohler, Brett BGSU 2 TRIPPING 19:17 PP
2nd Shea, Bobby BGSU 5 CHECKING FROM BEHIND 03:28 PP
2nd Shea, Bobby BGSU 10 GAME MISCONDUCT 03:28
2nd Jared Brown NMU 2 TRIPPING 10:32 PP
2nd CJ Ludwig NMU 2 CLOSING HAND ON PUCK 10:42
2nd Solway,David BGSU 2 SLASHING 12:49 PP
2nd TEAM BGSU 2 TOO MANY PLAYERS ON 15:33 PP
2nd CJ Ludwig NMU 2 ELBOWING 16:01 PP
2nd Wallace, Andrew BGSU 2 TRIPPING 19:25 PP
3rd Austin Handley NMU 2 HOOKING 02:16 PP
3rd Kyle Follmer NMU 2 INTERFERENCE 06:18 PP
3rd Peltoma,Ryan BGSU 2 FACEMASKING 10:15 PP
3rd Krelove, Andrew BGSU 2 HOOKING 16:21 PP
3rd Grover, Max BGSU 5 CONTACT TO THE HEAD 17:34 PP
3rd Grover, Max BGSU 10 GAME MISCONDUCT 17:34

You can see where BGSU got chippy at the end of the first, and halfway through the third.
And for comparison, here is MTU's from Saturday night:
1st Joe Basabara UMD 2 HOOKING 06:45 PP
1st Patrick McCadden MTU 2 HOOKING 16:46 PP
1st Patrick McCadden MTU 5 CTH ELBOWING 18:52
1st Patrick McCadden MTU 10 GAME MISCONDUCT 18:52
2nd Mike Connolly UMD 2 ROUGHING 06:33
2nd Mike Seidel UMD 2 ROUGHING 12:56
2nd Mikael Lickteig MTU 2 ROUGHING 12:56
2nd Brett Olson MTU 2 UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT 12:56 PP
2nd Ricky Doriott MTU 2 CROSS-CHECKING 12:56 PP
2nd Eric Kattelus MTU 2 HITTING AFTER WHISTLE 14:17 PP
2nd Eric Kattelus MTU 10 10-MINUTE MISCONDUCT 14:17
2nd Eric Kattelus MTU 10 GAME MISCONDUCT 14:17
3rd Wade Bergman UMD 2 CROSS-CHECKING 17:32 PP
3rd Bennett Royer MTU 10 10-MINUTE MISCONDUCT 18:54
3rd Bennett Royer MTU 2 UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT 18:54 PP

Again, thankfully Walt and Co. have taught these kids to NOT goon it up.

Double post.

I would be quite surprised if any action is taken by the CCHA. Walt isn't the type of coach to go crying to Tom Anastos every time a questionable hit is taken against his players (looking in Jim Roques direction), there have been plenty of times throughout the last eight years where he could have escalated one of these calls to the CCHA.

I DO expect, however, video of these hits to be included in the coaches meetings this spring in an effort to cut down on these types of hits.

If they want to use my video, all they have to do is ask. Ive still got the original.

Well, I have concluded my investigation, and it turns out that Walt isn't at fault in this case at all. We can all rest easily tonight knowing that I, boot_walt_kyle, have left no stone unturned in my thorough investigation of the matter at hand.
