NMU Wildcats 2010-2011 Season Thread

Re: NMU Wildcats 2010-2011 Season Thread

the PEIF ice rink was being torn out because that was not upgradable to Olympic size

The PEIF rink was upgraded to Olympic size when I was there ('93-'97). I don't remember the specific year, but it was later, and remember taking hockey class (with Dave Shyiak) and talking about the wider ice.

Pretty accurate about Tiffin. Simply put, they're horrible looking, and on road trips, I would expect em to bring their toys along with them. Their field isn't all the greatest either. They share it with 2 local HS and Heidelberg U, along with some middle school and Peewee games on it as well, and the Field Turf looks black because they really didn't spring for the good turf that would put up with that kind of use. And well, I'm pretty sure they don't recommend that a field doesn't have that kind of abuse anyways. And honestly, if NMU wanted to, it really wouldn't take much more than getting all the parents to show up at the game along with say about a half a bus of NMU students to outdraw Tiffin at their own stadium. And most disrespectful of all, when GVSU was there, the Tiffin Band left in the third quarter. it was raining and the game was a blowout, but hell, put on some raincoats and pack up the instruments that don't handle rain that well. Tiffin is a disgrace to the GLIAC and D2.

Well, looking through the stat sheets, at least it looked like there were different people on the PK. :o

I haven't had the benefit of a TV/video of the games, but is it just that we're clogging up our goalies view too much? Or have most of the plays been ones that the "goalie would want back?"

While I'm a little concerned about the PIM's and resulting PK's, taking less penalties would still result in similar numbers with a PK this bad. I didn't think we'd miss Al Dorich and his shut-down, stay-at-home defense this much... :p ;)

Sorry to interrupt, and I know it's football, but ESPN's Page 2 (TMQ column) gave a nice shout out to NMU this week (at the end of the blurb below):

Obscure College Score of the Week: University of Indianapolis 6, Northern Michigan 5. With the Greyhounds leading 6-3 and facing fourth-and-8 on their 47 with six seconds remaining, Tyron Fakes of Indianapolis took the snap and ran backward all the way to his end zone for a loss of 47 yards, a deliberate safety and the end of the game. How many teams practice deliberately losing 47 yards? Located in Marquette, Mich., Northern Michigan University makes it easy to check something all colleges should make it easy to check, yet keep secret -- you can find out who graduated.

Edit: that last part contains a link in the original article that shows who graduated.

**** Hoven! Nobody over at D2F.com has even brought that up.

Re: NMU Wildcats 2010-2011 Season Thread

For those of us who "live and die" for our favorite college hockey team, there comes a time when that is secondary. And that time came to Pioneer fans this weekend.
GRAND FORKS, N.D. — University of Denver center Jesse Martin sustained three neck fractures in Saturday night's hockey game at North Dakota and was transferred to a Minneapolis hospital this morning where doctors are deciding if emergency surgery is required to relieve swelling of the spinal cord, the player's father said.

Page 3.......

NMU football travels up to Houghton. Not much for the Wildcats to really play for, other than pride, and a chance to really ruin MTU's playoff chances. MTU sits right at the seven spot in the region. Most likely they would need help right now to get in, most likely either MSU-Moorhead beating St. Cloud or Tiffin shocking the world and pulling off the upset against Hillsdale. Even with a Fiery Lizard pulling off an improbable win, NMU could really ruin it for MTU by beating them.

Re: NMU Wildcats 2010-2011 Season Thread

So what's the deal with Pietila leaving the team? Plus his brother and another recruit (Baker) aren't coming next year now? This info from the NMU-LSSU thread.

Re: NMU Wildcats 2010-2011 Season Thread

I have confirmed that Chad left the team prior to the Saturday game against Ohio State. He left of his own accord, citing unhappiness with his ice time. With Chad leaving the program, it is unlikely that his brother will join the Cats. His commitment was a verbal. He had not signed his letter of intent. It wouldn't surprise me personally, if Chad and his brother both end up at Michigan Tech. That is my opinion, nothing confirmed. And, NMUFan, your information regarding Jake Baker is incorrect.

Re: NMU Wildcats 2010-2011 Season Thread

Well I don't see why his brother wouldn't come because if he is suppost to be better wouldn't he get more ice time
