NMU vs. Miami

Re: NMU vs. Miami

I was in the student section, but it was not a good call in my opinion. About half of the penalties on NMU would have never been called had I been reffing; I would have called some though that they missed, there was no consistency. I liked that when I yelled at the refs before they came out for the third that Hill actually tried to explain to me the major....you don't do that as a refferee unless you are fairly certain you're wrong...

Just wondering, what are your credentials as a ref? Have you ever been a ref for a high action sport at a high-level? Reffing is a very very tough job, and although they get a few calls wrong, I think most NCAA hockey refs do a decent job calling games. I caught the last half of the game on B2, and I saw no problem with the reffing tonight. Hill might just have been explaining the call to you because he is a nice guy and wanted to explain the call to you. As much as it sucks when the calls go the other way and NMU loses, the CCHA has some **** fine officials who generally call good games.

Re: NMU vs. Miami

My fav call was the goalie interference on Florek. He went over to Walt to explain it and motioned with his arms like he (Florek) got his arms up too high. The guy is 6'4 without skates. Granted it was on the other side of the ice but maybe the people at home can tell me if that was a good call?

From what I saw on B2 it looked like he had his stick off the ice to try and be ready to deflect an incoming shot. Because of that his elbows were splayed out, but I don't remember seeing anything like what Sean Avery did.

Also interesting that Kosinski got a start last night. I remember hearing something about wanting more team speed. I don't remember hearing his name much.

Re: NMU vs. Miami

I'm going to credit a couple of things towards NMU near miraculous comeback last evening.

1. I'm sure Coach Kyle laid down the line in between periods and challenged each player to dig deep and they responded.

2. The officiating adversity really pumped up the crowd and there was a general sense of anger in the building. After NMU scored early in the third this carried over and even down 4-1 the momentum swung tremendously and both the fans and team fed off of one another.

3. NMU early on seems to play different in front of Ellingson than Stewie. I cannot blame Stewie completely but sometime you have to create your own luck and bail your team out. Reid looked very solid and comfortable in net although he wasn't challenged. I do believe we will have a goalie battle on our hands after these early results.

4. NMU needs help from Brown, Fox, Hanson and such. Olver and Florek cannot spend 60 minutes on the ice each evening. When these guys get going then NMU will start winning these games.

Lastly, Miami was head and shoulders better than NMU in the second period and I didn't see the third coming. They looked very fast and handle the puck well while carrying it and passing stick to stick.

I do believe NMU will play well tonight and I'm happy with the effort last evening even though it didn't result in a victory. It is one of the few times I will settle for a moral victory.

Although I can't find his name under the list of coaches.

Vic has also been replaced, which might change up a few things with equipment, although any excuse there would be weak.

Uhm... my source being speaking face to face with the man in the offices a few weeks ago? He's back in what was Vic's old position.

In regards to the game--I'm echoing that the first and third looked pretty darn good if not great, but the second was just a trainwreck. Cherny needs to sit out a few games, and as much as I love and believe in Stewy, I think it's time for Reid to get the starting nod. The year in Green Bay did him well, I think.

Re: NMU vs. Miami

Visual Interference is NOT a new rule, just a subjective one that they decided to finally call.

Obstructing the goalie physically or visually in the crease will not be allowed.

Now, had the 'Cats not decided to miss the second period, they may have not needed to have such a stellar third period to make the score close. And if anyone says it's all Walt's fault, I've seen the same lazy effort under Rick Comley coached teams.

And Stewart either needs to find some talent quick, or EVERYONE is going to see him for what he is: a mediocre goalie that got lucky with a good defense of Gus Gus, Cozy, and others in front of him the last few years.

Ellingson for Starter from here on out.

Interference
SECTION 29. a. A player shall not interfere with or impede the progress of
an opponent who is not in possession of the puck, or deliberately knock
a stick out of an opponent’s hand, or prevent a player who has dropped
the stick, or any other piece of equipment from regaining possession of it
or knock or shoot any abandoned or broken stick or illegal puck or other
debris toward an opposing puck carrier in a manner that could cause the
player to be distracted.
Waving of arms in front of a goalkeeper by an opponent is interference.

Quickly looking at the rule book, this is all I see under the heading interference.

'diva, I guess that's why he isn't listed under the coaching roster. Good to have him back.

Re: NMU vs. Miami

Joe's here. Unless he's spending alot of time scouting g NMU for a yet to be scheduled matchup against Robert Morris. He even had video equipment.

So essentially, he gets a penalty for being 6'4 +?

Re: NMU vs. Miami

Vic is the guy I was thinking of. Stewie said he helped him alot and misses him, especially on game days, I guess he moved to Texas to finish something is sports psychology, anyway somebody please get him Vic's number! Joe Shawhan is still there and doing Vic's old job, Aparch, get your facts straight. To say Reid should be the man from here on out is a joke. Sirota told me last year that the team plays harder in front of Reid because they don't trust him, but if that's what it takes, give it a try. To say Stewie is the benefactor of a very good defense is ludacris. If anything, when he is right, he makes them tolerable. Cosgrove and the like are not players, give me a break. Gus and TJ are the only ones who could play regularly at another school. In the end, when Stewie is playing well he is one of the best, and can steal or win a game for us. Reid may be serviceable in spot situations, but we will never win a championship with him, Stewie has a much higher ceiling and we need to get him right. Not a slam on Reid here, if he is in net I will cheer for him like every other Wildcat, but I am just being real. Stewie has got to be the guy if we are going anywhere.

??

I think you meant to say ludicrous.

Personally, give Reid some time to develop and he'll be great. In the mean time, let's have Stewie take some time and get his head on right, and then bring him back. This will give Reid some ice time and experience for when Stewie's gone.

Re: NMU vs. Miami

Even though we lost it sounded like we could have won both games...

I don't know if it was the fact that we played up for them or they played down. NMU had a lot of stupid penalties "again" and Miami didn't sound like they were on their "A" game.

Hopefully we get that first win next week. I can't stomach another start like the last few seasons.

The first game was the case of both teams scouting each other out for the first 20, miami dominating and playing their puck possession game for the second 20 and then taking the foot off the pedal in true coach blasi fashion.

I couldn't see/listen to the game tonight, but from what I understand Reich was the difference and stole a game for the 'hawks.

Apparently we've got a good bout of flu we're dealing with this weekend as well, so hell better in the UP than in the AA, so get well soon boys.l

Re: NMU vs. Miami

So what is our excuse this weekend?

Can we just chalk it up to we lost to a better team?

I can accept that and not blame Kyle at all. Now if we get swept by BG or LSSU it's a different story.

Re: NMU vs. Miami

The flu heading around Northern's campus is no joke. I heard from a professor that a poll is being takin of all the professors on how many people have been missing campus, if the average number of students missing class goes up much more campus is going to be shut down.

Re: NMU vs. Miami

Alot of stupid penalties? On Saturday there were only 4 minors whistled against NMU. That hardly qualifies as "alot," of penalties, stupid or otherwise. Played up or played down? Rubbish! Two teams played an outstanding weekend of college hockey. Did my team win? No. But they played well. Excuses? None needed. Miami not on their "A" game? That had entirely everything to do with the way NMU played them. NMU had an outstanding game plan. They battled hard. That's why Miami's A game was off.

Re: NMU vs. Miami

Diva: I was just picking on you for your/our usual source. ;)
I didn't look further to see if he was back after I saw the article.

Saturday night sounded MUCH better. As in had the 'Cats not sh** the bed Friday for 20 minutes, they may have walked out with some points this weekend.

Lesson learned... let's hope that the 'Cats from Saturday night show up from here on out. We need our piano movers.

Re: NMU vs. Miami

Lesson learned? ***?

They obviously haven't learned anything!

We are off to the same start as the last few years.
