NMU Offseason 2010

Re: NMU Offseason 2010

Welcome to the year 2000. Vuvuzelas were available from the NMU Bookstore since I was a freshman. :p

And I don't see how the University would be making money on purchasing a gift to give to students who already get free tickets to the games. If anything, you'd lose money on both purchasing the horns, and paying fans who wouldn't come to games.

So those horns are the same thing as vuvuzelas?

Holy crap! I already own a vuvuzela!!!

Plus, there's this rule:
"Section 30.b: Spectators are not permitted to use artificial noisemakers, air horns or electronic amplifiers while the game is in progress."

Also, while the vuvuzela thing is big right now, I can't help but think that we'll all be on to the next big joke by October.

Re: NMU Offseason 2010

News out of the Tech thread is that this is officially the last year of the Superior Showcase. Also, we will only be playing Tech twice in the 2011-2012 season.

I like what this can open up in terms of non-conference games. Tech's talking about bringing in some ECAC and Hockey East teams, and it would be interesting to see if we could piggyback off of that and face some East Coast competition as well.

Woohoo!!! :D

I like what the showcase did, allowed two CCHA schools to get non-conference games against two WCHA schools, but it sorta wore out it's welcome.

Oh, and for those keeping track of NMU alums: Matt Siddall was not tendered a Qualifying Offer by the Atlanta Thrashers making him a free agent July 1st, Mike Santorelli was tendered a qualifying offer by the Nashville Predators and (if he signs it) remains Preds property for next season, Nathan Oystrick was placed on waivers by the Anaheim Ducks and could have the remainder of his contract bought out to become a free agent July 1st, and finally Dirk Southern is rumored to be going overseas to play next year.

For us, it was mainly just a way to get a game against LSSU for a few years. I think it's ending because Tech and Duluth are starting to look at other options (especially Duluth with their shiny new rink and recent resurgence). Plus I don't believe LSSU liked the long bus ride to Duluth (their two games at Tech were on Sunday because Roque insisted on an off day).

Re: NMU Offseason 2010

I just thought of the best promotion to get students into the seats at games.

FREE VUVUZELA NIGHT!!!!

You give every single student a vuvuzela at the door and they can blow them all game. Vevuzela fever has gripped America like never before and this season is the time to strike while the iron. The Berry will sound like a swarm of angry bees and the opponents will likely go MADDDDDDD from the noise.

Bzzzzzzzzz..................Bzzzzzzzzzzzzz...................Bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...........

What's that sound?

The sound of sweet sweet money pouring into the pockets of NMU on vevuzela night

Artificial noise makers are not allowed by the NCAA

Re: NMU Offseason 2010

That actually would be pretty cool. Or, UNH--Wildcats vs Wildcats!

Like I said...

As for roporting the smart guy... it's summer. The board barely did anything during the peak of the season. Think of him like the chicken pox--don't scratch, ride it out, and it'll go away.

UNH...I think Id be more fired up for that game, playing the one team I hate more than Lake State. I really really hate UNH. At least we have more titles than them :D

Dont scratch...ride it out...It'll go away...sounds like a weekend here at NMU :p

Speaking from experience on that last part? ;)

There are no teams I hate more than Lake State, though after the regionals, St, Clooud is right up there.

Re: NMU Offseason 2010

I dont see getting UNH or Maine up here with Tech in there. Teams that are more Tech's speed are Merrimack, Providence, UMass....And based on the budgets of those last three, Id guess we'd see UMass or Vermont instead.

I'll try to pull some strings with friends at UMaine. Maybe one of them knows the A.D. and can make a push for something

Oh yeah, because Walt's phone would otherwise be ringing off the hook with requests to travel to the UP just to play Northern. :p

Look at it this way - if Maine and/or UNH are really that good, Tech should be an easy stat padding win for them, right? ;)

He has a point. It would be easier from what I've heard to get the teams out here if we use the fact they could play both of our schools, and maybe even the boat anchors, too.

I say get RPI up here, and bring their fans. They were a good bunch.

I don't doubt that - we discussed this not too long ago in the Tech thread, but I suggested aiming for geographic rivals and potential traveling partners, such as RPI and Union. I'm questioning his assertion that we don't have a shot at scheduling Maine or UNH just because my team sucks. The real reason it will be tough to schedule "name" schools is because their ADs and budget people are going to question why they are looking to fly out west to play two podunk schools in the UP, when they could easily bus to a bunch of the podunk ECAC schools to keep costs lower.

I know--I was part of that discussion in your thread. I was quoting your post to agree with it and emphasize my point. I was leaving the poo flinging out of it because, really, I'm over it.

And, I agree with your second point here--getting the smaller schools would be far easier. It's not the name draw of playing someone like BC or BU, but it's still neat. And, after the GLI, I'd love to see RPI up here. :)

How would this work? RPI and Union would each travel to the UP and each would play NMU or Tech and then switch the next night?

If that's what is being suggested, I think it seems like a very longshot
