NMU Fans: The Worst in College Hockey

Re: NMU Fans: The Worst in College Hockey

Other fans: Im sure there are worst fans than NMU. Lets take Michigan for example. Their band can only play a few number of songs.

The fact that their band (and believe me, I love making fun of Michigan's band :)) chooses to only play a few songs makes them bad fans how, exactly?

How about cutting down on the constant infomercials going on at the games. Yea, I'm sure they bring in some sort of revenue

That's it right there, though. Sponsors' messages HAVE to be read. If they're not, then they paid for a service (advertising) that they're not receiving. At this point, NMU can't risk losing any sponsorships from local businesses. They need the revenue, and the businesses need the advertisements.

Yes, even TCF (sadly)

I'd love to hear a debate between Wolverine Trumpet and you about that topic. :D

Re: NMU Fans: The Worst in College Hockey

Tickets are so expensive for non students.

Seriously? When i was looking at coming over for the BSU series, I was pretty excited about $14 tickets (Bemidji State just upped their prices to $19 - in one of the poorest counties in the state of Minnesota), and I just saw prices over at North Dakota, where they go from something like $30 for "value games" like MTU, up to $40 for "premium games" like Minnesota and Wisconsin (not to mention the prices you have to pay on StubHub).

I think if you just had the lyrics to the songs/chants/cheers down that would make a world of difference. You wouldn't have to put down the arm motions, claps, etc. because people will pick up on those if the puckheads are leading it. Words are another thing, people will be reluctant to join if they think they may be saying the wrong thing. I think a double-sided copy on 8x10 paper would be enough to cover the major chants. (Great Big Sieve, Goalie! Goalie!, Sieve, Sieve, Give me an N, etc.) If money is an issue (this would cost $100-200 potentially, just for one game) the puckheads could look at getting local businesses to sponsor it. I'm sure a places like Vangos, the Doghouse, Remies, (etc.) might be willing to kick in $100 or so to have their logo on the sheet that is being handed out.

This is a great idea - we did the same thing many, many years ago at my school - UND - and it made a great difference. I'm now one of those "local business" people in Marquette and would love to help the cause and make things more fun at Wildcat games. I've always admired the Puckheads (Mojo was one of the first people I met in Marquette).
We've been working with the athletic department a lot this year and I've always felt that the NMU student section was just a short bit away from being the key to changing the atmosphere and helping overall attendance at the games. That plus the need to win a few more games early in the season to keep the local fan base interested. NMU has really had a pretty brutal early schedule the last few years.

Reply to me here and we'll see if we can set things up.

High Sticking Against Hunger will be tommorow before the game for anyone in Marquette. The event starts at 5 p.m., just bring any canned food items to get in. There will be mass quantities of food from different local businesses and a root beer keg.

The idea of flyers with cheers on them was discussed lasst year with the A.D. and nothing ever came out of it. If you want to talk to me about taking care of this privatly I will be at the High Sticking Against Hunger Event. I will have a license plate on my back with my name on it.

If you have ideas for student spirit, ASNMU is more than willing to hear them. We talk about student engagement at length every other meeting it seems. If you were to come up with some kind of program to get people more involved, I would be willing to bet the board, as well as the athletic department would support it.

I just talked to Kent Godfrey earlier today, and he is going to help establish some reserved seating for us on the board so we can help get attendance up.

If you want to get together to talk about some ideas we've had you can also get ahold of me tommorow.

Re: NMU Fans: The Worst in College Hockey

Something definitely needs to be done. There were over 1,000 tickets available for tonights game vs the top ranked team in the nation. The tickets aren't expensive at all. I think its the product on the home ice that the local fans are willing to pay to see. There really isn't an excuse why the student section isn't sold out.

I hope you're talking about the old Engelstad. Tried it at The Ralph a few years after it opened, and I believe REA wouldn't let them do it, IIRC...

I wont be there for the high sticking for hunger, but I should be at the game. I have long red hair and will be wearing a suit and yelling, you should find me, I have some clout in ASNMU and can probably really help things out for the attendance situation if we can come up with some executable plans. Let me know, I'm right in front of you guys (sec. 16 row F, on the right of the tunnel)

I've moved away from Marquette since I graduated in May (not many jobs in PR or promotions up that way), so I'm probably not the best person to talk to about this. I'm sure that anyone of the members of the puckheads on here would be the best person to talk to locally.

HAHAHA...no I am a friend of his, assuming you're talking about Brice Burge, he writes for me in the Political Review. My name is actually TJ, feel free to approach me at tomorrows game, I don't believe I know any of you.

Re: NMU Fans: The Worst in College Hockey

The NMU Fan base is a joke. From the students to the community members, who more often than not, DO NOT support the team. Many a nights go by and empty seats plague the arena. Granted times are tough, people are sick and ticket prices are high for non students, but for such a “Strong Hockey Community” I’d expect to see more people in the seats. As for students, it’s a joke how many students attend games. There are just fewer than 10,000 students and they can’t even GIVE AWAY 1,000 tickets to students. THEY ARE FREE. But as we saw at the NMU football game, students love bandwagon jumping. Positive or Negative.

This “Fire Walt Kyle” is a joke. You two clowns make me feel dumber every time I read a post of yours. You have ZERO knowledge of the mechanics and business of hockey from the college level. NMU IS A D-2 SCHOOL. WE ARE NOT MICHIGAN. WE ARE NOT MINNESOTA. STOP DREAMING OF 1991 AND JERKING IT OVER THE 1991 TITLE! I never even heard of Northern Michigan Hockey prior to coming to college here, and I’ve been a supporter/follower of College Hockey my whole life. Stop feeling everything is entitled to you here at NMU. 9/10 people don’t even know this school exists. Look at Mr. Kyle’s credentials. They speak volumes over an amazing coaching/scouting career, and his ability to recruit players who fit this system. NMU cannot draw like Michigan, Minnesota, and North Dakota. And to be honest, I don’t want players that are going to play one season and leave. I’m happy with the players that come in, give their heart to the program and get an education.

We are four games into the regular season. And if the community is “calling for Walt’s head” you are probably talking to the people who still love Comley, and cheer for a college they were most likely rejected from, much like most Michigan residents. Where were you in 2009 when this team went 16-5-2 and to the Joe? I’d rather be a perennial force in the CCHA year to year, win 20+ games than be a flash in the pan like Ferris State in 2004. But you know why Northern wins 20+ games most seasons? Because they have Walt Kyle, who can recruit players that have talent. Come on, you cant sit here and tell me with a straight face that you would rather have a program like Western, and MAYBE make it to the NCAAs once every 20 years.

Yeah, NMU hasn’t been to the NCAAs since 1999. Ten years. St. Cloud hasn’t won an NCAA playoff game EVER. Univ. of New Hampshire makes it every year and has nothing to show for it. Michigan Tech, winners of numerous national titles struggle to win 10 games per season. Christ, do I even have to mention Merrimack? Sometimes I wonder if this fan base would have been better off with Judy Bailey remaining at NMU and killing off all athletics. Im sure Boot Walt Kyle and Billy Blanks would just cheer for some other Michigan school, one they couldn’t get into. Most likely Lake Superior State.

What the hell? When did members of GPL start supporting NMU? I mean seriously, 90% of what you said was repeated with Gophers replacing NMU.

Perhaps you are more like minnesota than you give yourself credit for.

Mariucci won't let them do it either, as I found out on GPL earlier tonight.

Well, at least INSIDE the arena. Just sayin'.

And as for expensive tix? Please. I was happier than a pig in crap when I paid my $12 or whatever it was a couple years ago for the NMU-MTU home-and-home series. IIRC, MN tix are about $30/game, per ticket, on average (I think premium opponents such as UND/WI are more).

Finally, in reference to the fans, they welcomed a small group of us (MN, UND, MI, other fans) with open arms directly into the Puckheads section. We ripped them, they ripped us, it was fun times. The enthusiasm is there, for the most part.

Re: NMU Fans: The Worst in College Hockey

I found the worst fan in college hockey last night.
He was like Dustin Hoffman's character in "Rain Man" after a half dozen packs of cigarettes crossed with the internal monologue in Toot Cahoon's head. He never stopped talking "c'monmikey, c'monmikey" ARGH!!!!! Ugh. Just shut the **** up already.

*Chug Chug Chug* (or puff puff pass... either or..) Wha? oh dude.. there was a hockey game?... oh man.. I totally forgot... see I was at a party... and.. (story goes on) That's what the majority of the students do nowadays. It's sad.

Re: NMU Fans: The Worst in College Hockey

If you look at attendance over the past eight years or so, and you notice a decline, there are two factors to consider in the number of non student tickets sold. One is the economy, which decreases the level of discretionary spending. The second is the addition of the Marquette Rangers to the equation. The pie didn't grow when the Rangers came to town. It may have even shrunk in that time, and the Rangers took another slice out of it.
