NMU Fans: The Worst in College Hockey

Re: NMU Fans: The Worst in College Hockey

The worst behaved are by far Cornell followed by Michigan fans who have a computer chip inplanted in them, where every cheer is a set play and all seem to be controlled by a leader who sits on top of the scoreboard with a joy stick to control them......they yell "Go Blue" and the team is all in yellow !!!!!

Sorry, but Cornell fans ROCK!!!! If not for them, half of our cheers at Yost would not have had a place to been stolen. Thank GOD for home series in the NCAA's back in '91- we learned a TON from fans like Cornell's.

One thing to think about- there are three types of student fans. 1) die hard "sport" fan- BB, FB, Hockey- whatever- they go to the game for the sake of the game. 2) die hard college fan- the ones with school spirit oozing from the pores of their skin, and 3) the ones there to be seen.

The 1's will always be there- but there are not as many as people hope. I know I would have gone to UM hockey regardless, since I'm a big hockey fan, and that's why I don't go to any other UM sprots. I'm sure there are some Northern Fans who are like that.

The 2's can be a funny lot. In some circles, it's not "cool" to be so much into your school. Actually, there are a lot of circles like this. But that can be changed- see the posters from DU. Once you get this fan, they will be there, regardless, and not complain too much, since it's still very entertaining (I'll put bando in this group, since I've met her on this thread).

The 3's are the ones who are very fair weathered. There if the team is doing well, gone if they are not. Where you need help is turning these fans into 2's. Or sometimes 1's.

One, of course, can be multiple of the above- including 1, 2, &3 at the same time- when you get SO upset about loosing a STIKING GAME. Oh, did I mention that this is entertainment? If you think that a bad hockey team reflects on you personally- you might want to check on that. All the NMU fans that I know- even the ones that HATE my school, don't seem to think that loosing to any other school makes them less of a person. And they are super great people.

One question to BB and BWK- do either of you still hold season tickets? Or contribute money to the athletic program (not the school, the athletic program specifically). If not, why do you take this so freaking personally? It's a game. It's entertainment. You are not loosing anything....

Re: NMU Fans: The Worst in College Hockey

This is fun....Cornell is ideally where I'll attend Grad school. I'll go from one "worst fan in college hockey" to another.

I wonder how many empty seats there will be at the game tonight? 1,000, 2,000? As much as the OP is an asshat, that's one thing they were correct about. Student support at the games is abysmal, and community support isn't any better. And before any of you puckheads jump down my throat, you guys aren't as strong a section as you used to be either.

remember when Mojo, et. all. were the core group for the puckheads. Those guys knew how to get the whole student section into the cheers. Now, it seems that the puckheads do a great job getting sections 16 and 17 involved in the game and the cheers, meanwhile 14,15, and 18 (I think I have the numbers right - i'm talking about the student sections that are off on the sides of the student section) just sit on their hands and don't give two craps. They go to the hockey games to see their friends. A message to any puckheads on here: Tonight, try your hardest to get ALL of the student sections involved in the cheers. A huge game like tonight's and tomorrow's is a one-time chance to get the entire student section riled up and show all the freshman how to act at a hockey game. It will be very hard to get those bums to stand up and cheer, but try your hardests

And wow, finally a sensible idea not hell bent on the firing of Walt Kyle. Maybe you do have some sense. I actually think this is a pretty good point and idea. I am not a puckhead, but am always in 16 on the right of the tunnel making a ton of noise (I actually convinced a better portion of ASNMU, which I'm on, to both go to the hockey game as a group AND pregame at my place....), but the peripheries tend to be fairly quiet, and it would be great to get them pumped up and loud tonight!

Few things:
FIRST: PREGAME IN THE PARKING LOT WITH THE PUCKHEADS. WE DONT BITE (MALES AT LEAST). We have a Grill, Beer (if we like you, sorry BWK...you prob wont get one).
As a puckhead, we arent inclusive at all. I think people find us intimadating. We've inducted a lot of new puckheads this year. All you really got to do is come hang out, be loud and support the team. No Negative Nancys (That was the lamest term I ever used on USCHO). As for the other sections, we've tried. Its been the biggest problem since Ive been here, but ah Progress report! Section 14 was actually standing on Saturday night's game. Party because those in the first row chose to stand but hey...it was cool looking over to that section and seeing them standing without us yelling "On your feet" at them. Baby Steps...

As for tonight: Im not expecting many people. Dale K, the hypnotist is back for his 84776th straight year. I mean, if you want to go watch kids jump around like they are riding a pony, go for it. Its the same act every year. Its Halloween weekend so yes, parties. I wonder how that will affect attendence at the big party school of Union this weekend:D

Community support: Its weak, but playing the #1 team might help a little. Tickets are so expensive for non students. I really think they are missing out on deals like "Buy 1 ticket vs. Miami get 1 free vs. Western" type of deal. Its the simplest marketing tool ever invented. Free stuff. Plus, it invites people back, who more than likely will bring a friend along, both in turn will buy food, drinks, pay for parking.

Other fans: Im sure there are worst fans than NMU. Lets take Michigan for example. Their band can only play a few number of songs. The "Lets Go Blue" Was played 14 times during the game at the Joe. I mean, NMU Fans even have a song for the opposing goalie. <Goalies Name> Is a Great Big Sieve! song.

....I’ve been a supporter/follower of College Hockey my whole life. .... I’d rather be a perennial force in the CCHA year to year, win 20+ games than be a flash in the pan like Ferris State in 2004. ....

Your claim of being a lifelong college hockey fan lacks credibility. An avid follower would know we were a flash in the pan in 02-03. :p :D

If that's really the case, it doesn't matter what you give away, it's hard for a family to go to a game. I see how crappy things are down here in the palm, I can't imagine them being any better up there.

I think the best way to go about it is get more students to the game. They will find ways to come if the stay in the area. But THEY are the ones that make the "other than the game" part fun. You have the puckheads who help, too. But it's fun to laugh at antics, as long as it's clean (darn it UM students...).

Re: NMU Fans: The Worst in College Hockey

That is how I would be if I were an NMU fan....or a Yooper really.

And why are we limiting this to NMU fans? Clearly CCHA fans are the worst in college hockey, it seems some have never even heard of NMU despite being college hockey fans their entire life. And clearly Michigan fans, and their band can only yell/play "let's go blue!" And don't forget Spartan fans, they advertise their shortcomings, "can't read! can't write!" (at least, I'm pretty sure that is what they are saying)

Oh, and I hear it's all the fault of the CCHA fans that UAH doesn't have a conference to play in next year.

I hate Dale K. I hate him so much. Same act every year.

I think you admitted in your post, people find the puckheads intimidating. They think of you guys as some "fan-gods or NMU hockey". Some how, the puckheads need to break this idea and make themselves seem open. When I said "inclusive" I didn't mean that you won't let people in, I meant that people have this idea that the Puckheads are inclusive. I'm glad to hear that Section 14 was standing up, I remember being forced to sit over there once last season and was yelled at by the girls behind me for standing --- WHEN I WAS STANDING AND CHEERING BECAUSE NMU HAD SCORED A GOAL!!!

I think Billy might have a good idea in this thread. Is there anyway the puckheads could type up the words to the chants, make photocopies, and come to the game early and tape one to every seat in the student section?

BTW, last season me and some friends came over by the tailgate you were having. At a game, you would never know it was me. I become on of the most ravid NMU fans there is come game day. For the record, from the 15 minutes we spend by you guys, you all seem like nice people and real classy fans.

You're barking up the wrong tree now. Try beating Michigan at JLA before judging how "bad" we are or before poking fun at our fans or band. I mean, you guys are all about fun and spirit and all that, but don't denigrate our experience to try to make yours look or sound better. After all, we don't get all decked out in hardhats with flashing lights and safety patrol vests to make our point. That's your schtick and it works for you, but we don't poke fun at that. Every school has organized cheers, songs , etc. Great. Have fun.

Yost is filled to near capacity 6K+ for every game. The student section is full, loud and into the game. The band plays what they are instructed to play and does it with enthusiasm. I guess that makes us pretty bad, bad enough that some opposing players and coaches wish they had that kind of support. It sounds as if the thread was created in order to point out the lack of mass fan support more so than indicting individual booster groups/bands etc.

hehehe, that reminds me of one of my favorite regionals moments. In Grand Rapids, the Wisconsin student fans start chanting "boring students" at the Michigan student fans. At this point in the game Michigan is up 3-0, and our students retaliate with "boring players". :D

Re: NMU Fans: The Worst in College Hockey

FYI, the chant/cheer thing has been thought of in the past... I even got started on it... The problem comes in actually putting it to paper for 2 reasons......

First is size.... Even on an 8x11 sheet, you would have problems putting EVERYTHING on there and have it still be legible... Don't forget that if you want to educate, you also have to describe situations on when certain cheers need to be used ("Goalie! Goalie! Sieve! Sieve!" only during the 2nd period for example). That eats a lot of space....

The second thing is that alot of this stuff is hard to put on paper and describe it to people... How do you describe some of the combinations of clapping and Chants on some of the cheers? Or how about the arm motion on the "SIEVE!" cheer after the goal.... Alot of the stuff you really can't describe...

I think if you just had the lyrics to the songs/chants/cheers down that would make a world of difference. You wouldn't have to put down the arm motions, claps, etc. because people will pick up on those if the puckheads are leading it. Words are another thing, people will be reluctant to join if they think they may be saying the wrong thing. I think a double-sided copy on 8x10 paper would be enough to cover the major chants. (Great Big Sieve, Goalie! Goalie!, Sieve, Sieve, Give me an N, etc.) If money is an issue (this would cost $100-200 potentially, just for one game) the puckheads could look at getting local businesses to sponsor it. I'm sure a places like Vangos, the Doghouse, Remies, (etc.) might be willing to kick in $100 or so to have their logo on the sheet that is being handed out.

I would rather donate money for this to be done than to the Blue Line Club any day.

Re: NMU Fans: The Worst in College Hockey

1. Look at the attendance from Ohio State so far this year.

2. No need to write things down. Just pay attention. If you can't hear it, then it's not loud enough to matter.

3. Bemidji is not a team the casual fan will come out to see. Neither is Miami, no matter what their ranking is. It's all about name recognition.

4. I think tickets are $13. That is a pretty cheap going rate. LSSU has theirs at $10 which I think is the lowest in the CCHA. I'm all for deals and whatever, but I think the rate is reasonable.

5. As we've said 800 times every time this is brought up. Win games and people will come.

If you have ideas for student spirit, ASNMU is more than willing to hear them. We talk about student engagement at length every other meeting it seems. If you were to come up with some kind of program to get people more involved, I would be willing to bet the board, as well as the athletic department would support it.

I just talked to Kent Godfrey earlier today, and he is going to help establish some reserved seating for us on the board so we can help get attendance up.

How about cutting down on the constant infomercials going on at the games. Yea, I'm sure they bring in some sort of revenue, however, I'm tired of the constant product pushing... TCF this.. Jimmy John's that.. etc. It takes away from the atmosphere at the arena.

A standard sheet of paper is 8.5 x 11. Sure, you can get it on 8 x10, but cutting it down is just going to cost extra. ;)

A-men to that! :)

Truly, the best way to learn these is to just be there.

Jimmy John's is ok--they usually only do that in the 3rd anyway, so that doesn't eat too much time. Maybe they should give some of the promotion plugs back to the announcer rather than have the uninspiring student read them. And FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THINGS HOLY, stop mentioning TCF every farking 15 seconds. You've been here for 3 years now. We get it. You're here, you think you're great. Get over it already.
The spontaneous singing of "Sweet Caroline" was pretty awesome last week. :)
