Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

Freshman year of high school my social studies class had a segment on world religions. We covered a half dozen or so - Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Shinto, and maybe one or two others.

This guy is an idiot.

I agree, if they covered those others - the article was unclear unless I missed it.

Sounds like he doesn't realize there is a difference between studying a religion and religious instruction.

While I agree it's nuts, the school is probably better off avoiding any sort of references to specific "pillars" of ANY religion. Leave that to the Churches or to Specific World Religion classes taught at High Schools or University if people are interested.

Still nuts though.

To me, that's what is important here - the context.

I don't expect the War on Christianity crowd to recognize that nuance though.

That's what caused me to pause. Why would you need to cover the Pillars and have an assignment based on those specifically?

I'm trying to think of whether writing out the 10 Commandments would be necessary to learn about Christianity.

I'm thinking not.

I took a course in high school that was focused on the major world religions; in it we learned about the major tenets of the various religions we studied. That was 21 years ago, so I've since forgotten them, but they were floating around in that empty noggen of mine for a while.

Especially since the Ten Commandments are Old Testament and Christianity proper is New Testament, no? I thought that the Ten Commandments were replaced by Two Commandments:
- Love your God with all your heart and soul
- Love your neighbor as yourself.

I was raised Catholic and we learned about the 10 Commandments (and many other OT stories) and they were a recurring theme.

Don't know how it's presented these days.

What I hate most is the sites that trump up the fact this guy was a Marine, as if he gets a free pass on being stupid because "he protected our freedoms!" Yes, you served in the military. Good job. Thank you. But it doesn't give you a free pass on being stupid.

Replace the word "Marine" with "nurse" and "protected our freedoms" to "helped sick people in West Africa":

What might have been posted on another thread:
What annoys a lot of folks are people that trump up the fact this gal was a nurse, as if she gets a free pass on being stupid because "she helped sick people in West Africa!" Yes, you served in honorably and well. Good job. Thank you. But it doesn't give you a free pass on being stupid.

What is going on in Farmingdale, NY? First that decapitation, and now this?

Years ago in Chicago, there was a gang that specialized in home invasion robberies, usually accompanied by sexual assaults of the women folk. A special CPD undercover unit got wind of their next intended target and was waiting for them when they arrived. The cops killed them all. Problem solved.

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

Wow, if that isn't straight out of the Karl Rove "accuse the other party of what your party is actively doing" playbook, I don't know what is.

You are going to tell me that yesterday's moderate republicans are pro-democrat? Position for position alone says that isn't so. Now, social grouping... yes, I could see that... but not based on beliefs and positions.

On economics, you are 100% wrong. The Democrats have drifted right while the GOP has galloped right. Yesterday's mainstream Republican policies are today's mainstream Democratic positions. Yesterday's lunatic fringe right wing policies are today's Republican mainstream policies.

On social policies, it is mixed. Both parties and the country as a whole have (thankfully) galloped left on gay rights. Guns have been just like economics. On women's rights, the parties have diverged with the Democrats moving farther left and the Republicans moving farther right, while the country seems to have either not moved or changed the channel.

Someone ought to throw her over a bridge. Preferably one that is very tall and overlooks an expressway.
